Hopefully not as terrible as the last fanfic i wrote...

So, the first Fan Fiction i wrote was rather bad, i have decided to start writing a second one which is a back story for my OC.

If you read the first one you will be glad to know that this time i am not using zombies, my OC is now a Pegasus instead of an Alicorn and most importantly, i am not writing in first person! :D

It isn't finished yet, but i figured i would share some of what i have written thus far, any feedback would be nice and i intend to update this thread with the next chunk of writing soon. Currently it is only 1,244 words long.

Some important notes-

It is a backstory, so its set sometime in the past (hence why Luna is still banished to the moon)

I have altered canterlot slightly for my own needs, imagining it somewhat bigger than it is and giving it districts.

This is not finished

This will be PART of the back story but i intend to write multiple parts

THIS IS NOT FINISHED :P

Here it is:

The pale moonlight shines down upon the roofs of Canterlot, throughout the city ponies sleep while they wait for Celestia to raise the sun and begin another busy day in Eqestria, under the watchful eyes of the mare in the moon a figure jumps from roof to roof, his coat as black as the night itself, the figure unfurls his wings and glides down into the open window of a house.

Once inside he sticks to the shadows and makes his way through the house, swiftly and silently he pilfers the belongings of the blissfully unaware residents, carefully placing each and every valuable into a saddlebag before taking flight out of the window through which he entered,  pleased with his haul he makes his way back to the abandoned bakery on the edge of the shopping district in which he resides.

He sighs as he stashes his pilfered items away with his other treasures within the basement of the bakery and makes his way upstairs, after making sure that no light would escape through the window shutters he lights a candle, for the first time tonight his face is visible, although he could be no more than 18 he holds an expression of somepony who has lived a hard life, he has a pitch-black coat with a matching mane with flakes of red and grey mixed in, he is a Pegasus.

All of his features help him with his chosen profession, for he is Night Shade, one of very few thieves in Equestria brave enough to operate in Canterlot, he had grown up on the streets begging, abandoned by a family unknown to him, at the age of 10 he turned to thievery in order to stay alive, now 8 years later he has perfected the art and even has a roof over his head.

Night Shade smiles, impressed by how far he has come in such a short time with no help from anypony else, he blows out the candle and heads off to bed, the soft patter of rain accompanies his quiet breathing as he drifts off, thankful for the roof over his head as he remembers the days of sleeping out in the cold rain with old newspaper being the only cover he had.

Dawn's light creeps it's way in through some cracks in the wall and Night Shade drags himself out of bed, there wasn't much for him to do during daylight, he did the majority of his thieving at night time aided by his natural camouflage, stealing in daylight was much harder, most of Night Shade's days were spent either trying to sell his stolen goods or exploring the city and picking his next targets.

He had learnt pretty early on in his thieving career that stealing only what is required to live is much harder than stealing valuable items and selling them to buy whatever he needs, He had been surprised to find that Canterlot does indeed have a black Market, the problem is that due to it's illegal nature it had to move around the city, the only way to find it was to stumble across it in one of the thousands of alleyways within the city.

Looking back over the cracks in the wall Night Shade made the decision that he needed a new place to live, somewhere where he would never have to worry about light escaping out and giving away his position, a cave would be ideal but that would mean living outside the city, if he were to be searched on the way back out of the city after a heist he would be arrested.

He decided that he would spend the day looking for a new place to live, there are large parts of the city that he hasn't yet explored, even in his long years living on the streets he stuck mainly to the central districts due to the abundance of ponies and things to steal, the outer sections of the city could very well contain some sort of hidden safe-haven for thieves for all he knows.

Donning his cloak and scooping a hoof-full of valuable trinkets into his saddlebag he leaves his hideout and sets off towards the outer edge of the city, taking side alleys and concealed routes where possible, he makes it to the edge in no time at all, Canterlot is small for a city but it is still a city, you would be surprised how much is crammed into its confined space and how many ponies live here.

Walking around the edge of the city he looks up at the large mountain next to which the city resides, if there were a cave in the face next to the city it would be a perfect place to live, but after spending hours walking around the face next to the city Night Shade gives up, the sun is already starting to set and he will need to be working very soon, resigning to an non-productive day he heads back towards his hideout.

After a few minutes walking, he ducks into an alleyway that the black market seems to have set up in, he haggles and trades off his few trinkets for a weeks' supply of food and a few bits, even a whole gem for one particularly attractive necklace, happy with his transactions he continues on home with his mood slightly lifted.

While walking back he decides to take a different route home, kicking a stone with his hoof casually as he walks he doesn't see the warehouse wall until he walks straight into it, falling backwards, dazed and confused he picks himself up and looks at the structure that assaulted him, the building is in a state of disrepair but otherwise seems somewhat stable.

Upon futher exploration, Night Shade discoverers that the warehouse is attached to the mountain at the back, curiosity overtakes the need for him to get home and get to work so he jumps into the building through one of the broken windows low to the ground, the warehouse is spacious and deserted, looking to the back wall he sees what he hoped for, a cave.

Tentatively he heads towards the cave, unsure of what could lay inside he peers into it, whoever lived here must have had a rather considerable amount of money, within the cave there are various rooms separated by old but sturdy looking brickwork, stepping within he sees that the cave goes back even deeper into the mountains than could naturally be possible, somepony must have carved this entire thing out.

Looking into one of the rooms he finds it abandoned save for a few scattered and broken pieces of furniture and some papers laying around, the air is stale and the whole place has a feeling of age, it feels as-though nopony has been in these rooms for decades, maybe even longer, and judging by the quality of the furniture and the size of the place, whoever built it lived in here with a small empire.

The next few hours are devoured with exploring the massive place that he has now decided may have originally be built as some sort of catacomb for the city but forgotten and later repurposed by somepony else to live in with a large community, whoever lived here is long gone and it is likely that nopony even remembers this place existing, which means that he can now claim it as his own.

Thanks for reading it ^^
