Being reminded why I like MLP

I finally subscribed to Hulu + and I am having a CareBears marathon. As I am watching this show, I am being reminded to why exactly I love MLP FiM so much.

When we were growing up (80s-90s kids), cartoons were not all pointless, random humor based off pop-culture. They had actual storylines, villains, and life-lessons. A lot of these cartoon episodes centered around a single character who has a problem and then showing how to overcome it.

For example, this episode of CB that I am watching right now is about the CBs bring some Stars in to the Wishing Star. There is a human girl with them who is very clumsy and the episode is a full set-up to show how to overcome this problem.

The episode prior to this deals with the death of a loved one (Sleeping Giant).

Other shows like Tale Spin, GhostBusters & Extreme Ghostbusters, Duck Tales - these all had flowing storylines that revolved around personal issues and trying to overcome them; everything from fear, bullying, trying to cope with new people, etc.

Hence why I just enjoy MlP so much.  In a world where we are given SpongeBob, Fairly OddParents, Regular Show, etc (NONE of these are bad by any means mind you. They are just all focused on 1-hit storylines based off random, quick humor), seeing MLP FiM arrive is a fresh of breath air, you know?

It not only entertains kids, but teaches them life-lessons. It is not afraid to get dark by giving us villains nor is it afraid of touching on certain real-life sceanrios (bullying for example).

Hence why I think tis such a good show XD

What are your thoughts my chaotic little minions?

As much as I love a lot of the newer shows to come out of various animation studios recently (Regular Show, The Amazing World of Gumball, etc.), Friendship is Magic truly sticks out in my mind due to it being the most clever show with an intended single-digit age demographic in years. Why did I have to put up with Dora the Explorer and Bob the Builder and all these shows that served no purpose but to be eye candy for my fledgling mind (with the exception of Sesame Street of course)? If I had this growing up, I would have taken much more from it than just a few words in Spanish and what certain construction vehicles look like.

That sounds like a good TV diet for children. Sesame Street and MLP.

It almost feels like a lot of these children shows are dumbed down for kids. Dora I understand and have no issues with, but there are still no real stories along with these today's shows.

Seasme Street not only taught kids numbers and letters, but it touched on a lot of real issues. Elmo's father was sent overseas as he was a soldier (to help kids understand and cope), there is a heart-breaking episode where Big Bird learns about death after one of the actors passed away, they talk about sharing, real compassion, etc. It's all done through stories and simple enough for kids to learn but not so simple that it insults their capabilities.

Looney Toons

Tiny Toons

Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog

Animaniacs

Ren & Stimpy

...I mean not that I don't get your point but...yeah. I'm just saying. We tend to glorify the past a bit but older animation at times IS greater than what we have now. It depends though on what it is.

I grew up in England in the '70s, so a lot of the cartoons over here passed me by, however when my daughter was little she used to watch Rugrats, Doug, Hey Arnold, Rocko's Modern Life, the list goes on-including stuff like Allegra's Window.

I liked some of it -especially Rocko's and Hey Arnold, but nothing ever became appointment viewing until MLP.

I can't really pinpoint why either-I just love the show. It makes me feel good-that's about all there is to it.

Kinda same here, as cheesy as it can be I like idealistic "knight in shining armor" heroes that always beat the bad guys in the end, and MLP kinda reminds me of that.

"You know, I don't know who or what you are Methos, and I know you don't want to hear this, but you did teach me something. You taught me that Life's about change, about learning to accept who you are, good or bad. And I thank you for that."

I agree-i think it boils down to wanting an escape from the nasty crap going on in the world at any one time.

There are times I turn on the news, hear about all the depressing crap going on in the world, and just want to escape to somewhere that doesn't suck all the time, where things work out for the best in the end.

I think that watching MLP and getting that experience is a hell of a lot healthier than anti-depressants.

Same here I am not very popular at school and get bulled and exceled a lot. I also have to report on sad news and learn about wars in history class. Sometimes I just feel so sad but mlp helps make my life a little happier.

It has nothing to do with glorifing the past. The amount of cartoons that dealt with issues, that had actual storylines, and actual characters. Even Animaniacs, as random and pop-cultry as it was, still taught kids with some of their skits (like Beethoven's episode and such).

The difference between those you listed and today's shows is that back then Random Shows were not the norm. Now it has flipped flopped. Shows with actual storylines are now the unique thing and Random Pop Culture shows are the norm.

Mind you, none of these shows are bad. Just the shows that actually have storylines, villains, consistancy, and life lessons are very few and far between
