Question for the musically talented: How do I pick out bass chords on piano?

So, I'm fairly decent at piano. And by that I mean I've been taking lessons for the past two years and I still suck I'll learn a song via sheet music every once and a while said me, never, but I usually try and pick it out by ear before I even think about searching for any sheets. This can be a problem when it comes to the bass portion of the song, as I'll do just fine picking out the rhythm, but when it comes to the bass chords I just give up after a few minutes and resort to playing a double octave. This is also crippling when trying to write my own music. Can any of you more musically talented people out there give me a hand? I have a chord and scale book just sitting around collecting dust, if that'll be of any use I can just whip it out in no time. It hasn't helped me so far, though.

[EDIT]: Whatever, not much of a point in asking is there. If a staff member sees this, please close the thread.
