Closet Brony Confessions: What I like about MLP

Hey everypony,

 

So I just recently discovered MLP:FIM, and it honestly blew my mind. 

 

I'm not sure what pushed me to go on youtube and watch an episode for the first time a few weeks ago. I mostly knew about the show from funny memes and gifs around the web (which is how a lot of folks were introduced to the show I think).  But after watching the first episode from season 1, I was instantly drawn into the series. Like Rainbow Dash and Daring Do, I just couldn't pull myself away despite being somewhat divided about the fact that I actually was into MLP. 

 

But everything from the simple, yet gorgeous and colorful animation, to the well-written and sometimes surprisingly subtle humor of the show was just great. The characters are all fantastic, even though I didn't warm up to some of them right away.

 

For example, my initial reaction to Pinkie Pie's character was somewhat ambivalent, but later in the series she became one of my favorite ponies. Despite being borderline obsessive and over-the-top at times, her nature stems from this earnest and admirable desire to brighten up the lives of others. Her fundamental flaw is that sometimes she gets so caught up in having fun and making others happy, that she doesn't realize what consequences her actions and "over-the-top" attitude might have on others around her (such as in Too Many Pinkie Pies). 

 

Each character's funny and unique quirks just make the show ... well, awesome. I'm completely hooked. But actually admitting to being an avid MLP fan is still somewhat embarrassing, even though I think there's a lot of legitimate reasons for liking the show. It just goes against the cultural stigma around what's "cool" and "not cool". 

 

But face it, what's cooler than rainbow dash wearing sun glasses?
