There is no limit on the dimensions of the image, and the size can be up to 255 KB.

I was wondering the same thing when making mine...

 

I didn't want my profile bg tiled, cropped, or even the WORST POSSIBLE THING (ugly white space)

 

I had no way of getting exact measurements, so I just winged it. (Haha! WINGED! Get it! Like pegasus-ponies---OK I'll shut up)

 

Apparently, Feld0 was a genius, again, and has it set to do something magic, and 'stretch' it in a way that fills the screen without destroying the image.

 

The 255 kb thing was an issue for me though...See, I work in Flash, and really that thing can push out some mother-bucking-MASSIVE file sizes... But I got it, as you can see by the bg I have on my profile.

Background images are centred in the middle of your screen and tiled. That's how I've set them to work.
