There were those who thought that Celestia and Luna would live forever. It was not a terrible assumption.They'd lasted a thousand plus years, and showed no signs of wear and tear! They were the most powerful alicorns to ever grace the lands. There was no indication to most that they were not immortal. The closest they'd ever come to losing their glorious leaders was when the Changelings attacked Canterlot.She'd been attacked, overwhelmed even, but she was back on her hooves by the end of the day. No need for alarm. Was but a scratch.

 

So they thought.

 

Queen Chrysalis had planned for the eventuality that she could be beaten. A million things could have gone wrong with her plan and, of course, they did. So, the spell that she had released would seem to do little: daze the Princess, put her out of commission, but all and all she would live. 

 

For a time.

 

The spell caused a horrible cancer to grow through her body. It was painless, a completely unnoticeable killer. The first sign of any danger came from a cough. By the time the Princess was coughing up blood, the cancerous disease had spread to her heart. There was nothing that could be done. The Princess' heart failed, and most thought it was the greatest tragedy of the age... that nothing could out do it...

 

They were wrong... with The Princess' sudden absence, and without unicorns who were trained and prepared to take over her role like ponies had before Celestia's rule, the sun halted in it's orbit, looming over it's ponies.

 

 

Seth Eclipse was in the sun goddesses bedroom, looking down at the fallen equine. Luna was next to him, sobbing silently as she couldn't believe such a tragedy. The greywolf had an arm draped over her, trying his best to comfort her in this time of misery.

Rut-Light was just outside the princesses bed chambers, silently listening to the sobbing of the Princess of the moon as he paced back and forth at his own pace outside the room.  He didn't care for rulers dying from mysterious ways, even thought the cause, revenge, was obvious...but that didn't stop him from feeling sorrow; he wasn't heartless, he could just care less to a certain extent.  He stopped his pacing about a white pillar and took a glance at the large double doors that led to Celestias chambers, his mind still confused what was up with the wolf that had entered along side Luna, who seemed to be in tears at the time.  Were they friends?  Who was this wolf?  Did he cause the princesses death?  

 

So many questions whirled through his mind, but there were no answers as of yet.  He then remembered that he had brought his saddle bags with him and set them against a nearby stone pillar, he trotted over to it, taking a slight glance at the old railway lantern that was depicted on the side of it as the white earth pony opened up the latch to his bag, took out a paper and quill before shutting the latch and he began to write.

 

'I have no clue who you are grey wolf, and being the skeptic that I am I would usually not bother my time with you.  However, that does not stop me from being curious of you...I'll be watching you.  Mind you that this is not a threat, I simply prefer not talking to those that I do not know, so do not take it as the former.

Rut-Light took the note and folded it in half, setting it down right next to where he was standing.  He walked over, slipped his saddle bags onto his back, and walked away from the room.

The two had been sitting over the body for an hour, not caring for the time. It was only sorrow that the two ever felt during their time there. Finally, Luna lost herself to her exhaustion due to the events of that day and dozed off next to her sisters lifeless body.

 

Seth put a blanket over her and walked to the door of the chamber. lucking back on the young sister, the wolf remembered what the elder one told him.

 

'Take care of her. When I pass... it will be you she will need. Be there to fill that need.' She had said a few days ago. Celestia was weak then, but still was a fine leader of her people.

 

Letting the night goddess sleep, Seth walked out of the chamber to prepare the funeral. He had been appointed temporary authority until Luna was able to hold her own. As he walked out, he noticed the letter on the floor. Picking it up, he read it over multiple times. What did it mean? Seth didn't know, not did he have the time to put too much effort in finding the owner. He had to keep the nation he was temporary ruling in a settled state from the biggest event since discord's uprising. However, this did not mean that he wouldn't keep an eye out for the pony that was watching him.

one day later

 

It was the funeral for Celesta of Canterlot. Only a select few were invited. There was the usual family and royalty, along with close friends of the families. Seth had coordinated the event, and even added one important detail. He mentioned to the guards surrounding the perimeter to allow a Rut-light if he was to come to the event. He wanted to know what he was doing the day before, and this would only help the matter.

@@arkman575, Rut-Light walked through the mostly still full streets of Canterlot and towards the funeral house for the princess.  As he walked up to the entrance, he was stopped in place by royal guard spears as they demanded his name to see if it was on the list.  "The name is Rut-Light." the guards, without a second thought, un-blocked his path and let him through as if it was an order.  He then walks in and sits down in the middle row, looking around for the grey wolf.

Seth was in the back of the funeral hall, making himself discreet. When he heard the pony coming in say his name was Rut-light, he stood from his seat. When the pony walked in, Seth placed an arm around the pony's shoulder and carefully nudged him into a vacant room in the building.

 

When he closed the door, he looked to the pony. "So, what do you want to know about me?" He asked. Giving the pony space.

@@arkman575, When Rut-Light was grabbed by the wolf and placed in a vacant area with him, he was a asked what he wanted to know, and after the wolfs question, Rut-Light sighed and dusted himself off and spoke.  "I assume that you're that wolf I saw go into Celestias Room with Luna, Why?  Do you have a relationship with her?  Who are you and why are you hosting a princesses funeral?" the white stallion questioned in a sort of calm tone, while still keeping his distance from the wolf lest he tried to attack.

Seth gave a quick smile to the pony, sitting upright on the floor in front of him. "Officially, I'm a dam worker. Off the record, I'm a diplomat who has been temporarily entrusted with the nation." He stated firmly. "My nae is Eclipse. Seth Eclipse. High alpha. I know the royal family do to my first contact to the nation. I was a true diplomat at the time. After a near failure in a peace operation, I was requested to stay as equestria's royal diplomat here instead of home. I know Luna from my time serving with her. We were... close at times. After an attack on my life, I laid low for a year. I gained this." he said, indicating his right eye which was rainbowed. "Now... who the hell do you think you are?" He said, standing up.

@@arkman575, Rut-Light nodded as he listened to Seth talk about himself before he asked him who he was, "Me?  Who the hell am I?  I'm a fifty-five year old ex-train engineer from Baltimare, I never really dealt with politics because, to me, they are a waste of time.  I'm a skeptic, I am the one who left you that note outside of the chambers, I followed you and Luna to there, but I didn't dare enter and ruin the moment with a snide remark from me, because god forbid I say anything bad about the sisters, but I'll be blunt here; I never cared for the sisters...but that doesn't stop me from feeling sorry for them.  I may seem like an ass when I don't know someone, but that's who I am...a skeptic." he said before taking a breath.  "You might now my name, by now, is Rut-Light.  You say yours is Seth Eclipse?  Honestly, I never have seen a wolf before me." he said as he kept a slightly relaxed face, but not letting anything down due to possibility of angering him.

"No offence to you... but you are an ex-engineer?" Seth said, a hint of anger in his tone. His expression stayed it's neutral look though. "How the hell did you have access to stand outside Celesta's chamber? Why do you question me of my authority when you have little to back up? Why would a commoner be one to stalk a master of the hunt? There must be more to you. Don't try to fool a wolf." He said, giving a warning growl.

@@arkman575, The gall of this guy to cal him such a thing, Rut-Light stared back with a insidious glare, holding nothing back.  "There is no royalty or commoners, there is only equality, those who rule over others are no better then those who they rule over.  What makes you think i'm a commoner?  Is it me stating that I am an Ex-Train Engineer?  Did that anger you?  Is me questioning you agitating you?  Well I'm sorry to burst you bubble, I am no commoner...I am something completely different.  So you better stay your tongue."  Rut-Light growled back, his bared teeth growing slightly sharper then they previously were.  'Come on...calm yourself'  he thought before his teeth went normal and his anger simmered down, "I'll take my leave now, thanks for the talk, Seth." Rut-Light said before walking out of the room, into the hall, and out of the building as he headed towards home which was nearby.

Seth fallowed the pony outside the halls and stopped a few feet away from him. "I'm not angered that you dare intimidate a wolf. Nor that you try to stalk me. What angers me is your blunt disrespect for one of the most loyal, honored, and respected equines to ever walk this land. I would go on to show you of your ill ways, but I have been tasked with restoring a nation that has been emotionally crippled by Celestia's death... god rest her soul..." he said, turning away.

 

He returned to the hall, where he sat next to a weeping Luna. She looked to him, then back to the marble coffin that held her kin. The ceremony started, and ponies walked up to say their words. Finally, it was Seth's turn. He walked up to the podium, looked to the solar goddesses beautiful, undisturbed body, then back to the ponies before him.

 

"Celestia... honored ruler, loving sister, caring teacher, loyal protector, and a hope for all who knows her...

@@arkman575,Rut-Light muttered a light-hearted, "Goodbye", as Seth left back for the funeral house.  As he watch Seth enter back in and sit down, listening intently on what the speakers were saying about the benevolent ruler of Equestria, and when it was Seth's' turn to talk Rut-light looked on in, getting a tad closer to the entrance to get a better listen.  The words he spoke were deep, meaningful and he spoke in such a sorrowful tone of voice that Rut-Light thought the guy might cry a bit, "Wow," he whispered to himself in surprise, "Maybe I misjudged him.  Maybe he is a nice guy..." he then turned to face the guards that were staring at him with a stern look in their eyes, "Good morning sirs, um, would you guys mind lending me a piece of paper and a quill?" they looked at each other with a look on their faces that just screamed confusion, but they did so eventually, "Thank you, hold on one second."

​I may have misunderstood you, you definitely are a better speaker than I am, I will say that is a major thing I noticed.  Look, I did not mean disrespect, you may have viewed it as disrespect, but I viewed it as food for thought; but take it however you want.  I am sorry for that.  I will still stand by my beliefs though, I hope we can have a proper introduction sometime when ever you are okay with it, I feel like I have screwed up first impressions; if you agree then please come by 5234 W. He then folded it in half and hoofed it to the guards and asked them to give it Seth when the funeral was over with.  They agreed and with that, rut-Light left for his house, walked inside, and shut the door.

Seth finished his speak, feeling more dread than ever. He didn't show it, but he felt it. He sat with Luna for the closing ceremony as they lowered Celesta's coffin into it's grave. When a loud thud of stone resting each other resonated from the tomb, Luna griped Seth. After getting up and walking to see the guests, Luna parted for the night to try to move the sun back down for the night. As Seth walked to the exit, he was given the note by the guard. Reading over it, he gave a light smile, then a frown. With a sigh, he walked to the house and knocked on the door.

@@arkman575, Rut-Light was just settling down after arriving home not 4 minutes ago when he suddenly heard a knock on his front door.  The knock wasn't as loud if a hoof had knocked on it, no, this was soft like a paw had done the knocking, and he knew who was knocking.  "The door's unlocked Seth, you can come on in."

The wolf opened the door and walk in. "I came at your request, and I have a few words to say." He said as he walked into the living room where he found the pony. "Look, I have been under a great deal of stress due to the death of the princess...and I shouldn't have let your comments get to me. Wolves can be a bit edgy with people hey don't trust. when you add the fact that you were spying on me to that... it got to me..." He said.

@@arkman575,"How," he asked with confusion in his voice, "Is me 'stalking' you, getting to you?"  He asked the wolf and he got up and closed the door.  "Otherwise, I understand, I have had my fair share of stalkers and they aren't fun in the slightest.  That's why I wanted you to come here when you felt like it, so we can make a proper greeting for ourselves."

"No offence to you... wolves are paranoid. That... and what I have been dealing with lately... It has been hard to deal with this." He said,looking to the ground. He seemed stressed, and for good reason. "The sun is slowing..." he admitted after a while. It wasn't something he was supposed to say, but he needed to say it.

@@arkman575,Rut-Light nodded understandably, losing a friend to death wasn't easy to deal with, especially if you thought of them as highly as Seth did Celestia, "I can relate, losing family can be very hard to deal with."  Rut-Light said as he looked to the wolf, who looked quite stressed at the moment, but he could understand why; being the temporary ruler of a kingdom can't be easy.  Then he noticed that Seth was looking at the ground before asking, "Something wrong?" and no later then 2 seconds later did he receive an answer, not what he was expecting though, yet it made sense that the sun would be slowing down, Celestia DID control the sun after all....and yet he asked anyway, "How is that possible?"

"Celestia and luna controlled the solar cycle. The two worked together when they were together. Celestial took both roles when Luna was forced to the moon. WhenLuna returned, she was still weak and had to work hard at just getting the moon moving. When Celestia died... She has nearly been able to keep it going this long..."

@@arkman575, Rut-Light was slightly confused at the things that Seth was saying, "Wait, so you're telling me that  the sun is slowing down because of Celestias death, and that Luna can't keep it going forever?" he asked, a slight questioning gaze being focused on the wolf, "So, let me ask you this.  If the sun completely stops in the sky, Luna no-longer having the power to move it and inch, what would happen?  Would we all roast and die in burning flame?"
