how to make things better-

Changing her name to Bubbles for the cannon but keeping Derpy around for fannon material would be the best solution.

Keep the running gag of her clumsiness there. But also have her in less clumsy situations too. Or maybe just keep her as a were's Waldo of MLP.

Don't call it out, unless the time is right and it can still focus one the side characters since Derpy is a Background Pony (deal with it)

She could still be the same Derpy we all know and love and have her own episode without being that, my own head cannon says that she is not retarded but is falsely perceived as being retarded due to her walled eyes and clumsy nature.

But even if she did turn out to be that still dosen't mean that she couldn't still be portrayed in a thoughtful manner, I agree that making her just that and nothing more would be disrespectful but that is something even most Derpy fans do not want to see

There is no hard and fast rule that says that a background pony has to stay a background pony but if Derpy was given her own episode to clear up the whole thing about her supposedly being a walking talking stereotype and kept as a background pony after the episode I would be happy with that.
