Manufacturer And Powerplant: Historically, Long Beach Transit was a major operator of the RTS buses from GMC but all have since been retired. The bulk of its current fleet is represented by New Flyer D40LF and GE40LF models. In 2011 Long Beach Transit decided to switch to CNG and ordered 60 Gillig BRT units all CNG powered. With its oldest units nearing the end of their service life LBT ordered 13 New Flyer Xcelsior XN60's to begin phasing out older units. LBT was unable to purchase XDE models due to a new California mandate banning new sales of diesel powered units. To compensate and remain Eco-friendly LBT has purchased 10 K9 Electric buses from Chinese manufacturer BYD due to arrive in fall 2016.

Fare Collection: The Contactless Card Payment System in Long Beach is known as TAP card. It is also used by nearly all public transit authorities in Los Angeles County. TAP stands for Transit Access Pass and are manufactured and serviced by Xerox.

Livery: Long Beach Transit buses are painted Red on top, Yellow at the bottom and feature a black and white wave pattern down the center. Buses reserved for Long Beach Transit's Passport service which connects riders to the R.M.S Queen Mary are painted Red and Gold. Long Beach Transit does sell the sides of its buses for advertising space. The older livery hosted red and gold stripes on a white backdrop.

Innovations: Long Beach Transit is perhaps best known for directly engaging its customers and potential customers by encouraging them to "Dump The Pump" and ride the bus to save energy and fuel. Long Beach Transit is well known for its strong ad campaigns to this effect and it has largely been successful. Ridership has been on the increase for years nearly reaching 90,000 people per weekday despite being a medium sized service.
