RECEIVING Some Potential Good News
This will be quite the rare blogpost from me, one where I talk about work without going into rant mode. As those of you who read my blog posts know I am a dairy clerk at a grocery store, not a fate I want to be lifelong but one I am stuck with at least for now. But I am being presented with an opportunity I may never get again if I do not seize it. I am strongly considering becoming a Receiver and because the current Receiver at my store is likely going to be retiring soon I have the best chance I may ever have to eventually take his place once he does decide to retire.
For those that don't know, a Receiver is a back room manger. The Receiver is responsible for checking in all loads that come into the store during their shift, they count everything that comes in and log it into the computer. They are also responsible for signing in and out all delivery truck drivers and vendors/merchandisers as well as being responsible for all mark downs as well as keeping the back room clean and organized at all times. It is not an easy job by any means but it is one that I believe will greatly benefit me for the following reasons.
1. I will no longer have to deal with customers: I will be confined to the backroom all day which means that while I will have to deal with vendors and other employees I know exactly how to handle them. Because my current job also has me as a backup checker I often have to deal with the public which because I am the worst checker in that whole store results in a lot of frustration on both my part as well as the customers and a few misunderstandings that aren't my fault but still occasionally get me in trouble.
2. I will be significantly less likely to get another injury: because being a Receiver is much more mental than it is physical the odds of me getting another knee injury will go down to practically zero.
3. Better hours: I was at my happiest when I was first promoted and had 4AM shifts and with me being a Receiver I can have those sort of shifts once again so I can get work out of the way and have the rest of my day. My days off will also be fairly consistent with them nearly always being Wednesday and Sunday. With that kind of schedule I could plan a lot more during the day and get much more done. My hours will go up but despite that I will be able to make much more efficient use of my day.
It is not something I am taking lightly and I of course am formulating backup plans in case it dosen't work out but I believe I will be much happier in such a position and better able to achieve my more long term goals.
