My main reason is the background pony thing. Plus, they're probably gonna rehash a villain from G1.

Bringing a background pony into the picture wouldn't be bad. But,the problem is, that the background characters have no development or anything. They're literally just there to fill in the empty background.

I think a good setup may be showing how essential the background characters are to the running of Equestria, and to make it more of a believable world. And not just "HAHA DERPY ATE A MUFFIN XDDDD" for 22 minutes.
