Waiting

MelancholicMemory

Background:

This is the most successful poem I've ever written. It has been quite popular on deviantART, been reviewed and recognized by WritersInk, and it has achieved numerous other accolades. I'm pretty sure I published it in TeenInk as well, but I can't remember. I wrote it at a very dark time in my life, but it's success helped to rebuild my confidence and move on.

Here's a short review of it from WritersInk if you want to read it.

"Loss is one of the hardest crosses we may have to bear. One solution is to just wait it out - until we fade to dust, or until our beloved re-awakens.

Beneath the powerful imagery and romantic overtones of this simple poem, there's a story of reluctant acceptance. A square facing-of-the-facts, but also a refusal to live life when the speaker's lover is gone. It is beautifully melancholic and tragic in its loyalty."

Here's the poem:

"Waiting"

I shall be waiting for you here

'Til even Death dies,

The Universe shatters

and the lights fill my eyes.

I'd dream of you daily

If I could sleep with you gone,

But, no, I must wait here

And sit here alone.

I know not the Devil,

Or God in the air,

Who can make me leave you.

Anything I shall bear.

Oh, love, I love you.

Oh, your soul I shall save,

So I lie in the grass

To wait by your grave.
