Solaris actually began as a contractor for Neoplan. Solaris built and sold Neoplan buses in Poland for the Eastern European market. Solaris began building its own buses in 1999 and did not renew its license with Neoplan. Solaris builds Standard Transit Buses as well as Trolleybuses and Tourist Coaches.

Solaris was the first European bus manufacturer to produce a hybrid version of one if its main models. For its electric buses and trams, Solaris teams up with other companies such as Ganz Electro in Hungary and Cegelec in the Czech Republic to assist with developing Batteries and other electric vehicle technologies.
