I think most fans totally missed the point of Sombra - he was in fact the most effective villain yet seen - no sarcasm. He had almost everything going his way: he was able to take advantage even of his setbacks (using the severed bit of his horn to spread his influence inside the barrier), attacked the only pony he could be sure had magic in the entire Empire and was thus most likely to be the source of the barrier (Shining Armor, the only unicorn he knew about, who as far as he knew was the only one keeping him out of the Empire - hell, who could have predicted an alicorn, one of only THREE in existence at the time being there?), overrode Twilight's attempt at teleportation, thus proving his magic was stronger than hers; used multiple traps Twilight only overcame through sheer luck, (one trap deliberately designed to trigger on use of Dark Magic, which was required to get to that point, thus priming any would-be interloper into springing it) and was finally defeated by TWO wild cards he could never have imagined (The first is Twilight's use of gravity magic to get up the stairs, and the second is Spike, entirely unpredictable).

Compare that with Nightmare Moon (who literally led the Mane Six to the only thing that can defeat her), Discord (who got blindsided by missing the obvious hints that the Mane Six were back in Harmony when wielding the Elements) and Chrysalis, who foolishly let Twilight go around freeing everypony else, and disregarding the very power of love that had let her get as far as she did, which directly led to her defeat.

Hell, Sombra is the Xanatos of MLP. I agree, he gets far too much hate.

They don't; they just hate his minor screentime.

His actual threat, however, is often praised as both unique and the most intelligent.

On a side note, he's the only other villain besides Discord and Midnight Sparkle to be shown to have some kind of reality-warping magic over a broad area (e.g.: turning the whole Empire into a crystal version of Mordor, making the entire place vanish for centuries, clearly putting pocket dimensions within the pathway to the Heart, etc.), making him something of a Physical God on top of it -- of course, he's supposed to be Pony!Sauron, so that's not entirely unexpected.

I don't know, I like sombra ! His pure evil intentions are an interesting part of the character.
