Mitsubishi is one of Japan's largest companies and in 1932 Mitsubishi Fuso (Pronounced "FOO-so, Meaning "Hibiscus") built its first bus prototype called the Fuso. It saw extensive use in Japan and prompted further endeavors into heavy vehicle building. Mitsubishi would restructure several times leading to many mergers and joint ventures with other internationally known manufacturers such as Chrysler and Volvo.

Mitsubishi Fuso trucks are workhorses which have a renowned reputation for being cost effective for small businesses and organizations. They do not cost much to purchase, operate or maintain and are easy to drive. Mitsubishi Fuso trucks sold so well in the United States in the 1980's a separate subsidiary was created in New Jersey called Mitsubishi Truck of America. It imports models from Japan and creates U.S. specific models to meet market demands. Mitsubishi Fuso competes heavily with its Japanese rivals Hino (Toyota Diesel) and UD Trucks (Nissan Diesel) as well as Isuzu Truck.

Canter Models (Canter... get it) have sold extremely well internationally, Domestically in Japan they have seen extensive use as Fire Engines and service vehicles such as street sweepers and mail trucks. Their small size allows them to maneuver tight and narrow Japanese streets. Many fire departments in South East Asia also use the Japanese spec Canter for Fire Fighting duties as well, most notably in Thailand.

During the last round of mergers and exchanges, DaimlerChrysler which held a majority stake in Mitsubishi Fuso was restructured. Daimler AG which owns Mercedes-Benz and many other brands created Daimler Trucks which owns an 89% stake in Mitsubishi Fuso currently. Fuso vehicles are popular because they get the job done at the lowest cost possible. They are often assembled only as a cab and chassis and the owner can select a variety of different body styles to equip it with. Box or Van trucks, Landscaping trucks and many others are available. Fuso trucks also usually come with smaller engines and manual transmissions to help improve fuel economy which is usually ideal for city driving.
