MLP FIM S7 EP9:Honest Apple Tilg's Review

Their are some things I want too say before I get into the review. This is the only episode in season seven so far that I have disliked. Not hated, only because my opinion has softend since I first watched this episode. And after seeing some other things that people have said about this episode my opinion of it has changed. I can't say it is a terrible episode. It isn't great, but it does have enough memorable moments too make it worthwile. Anyways lets get into this.

Spike and Pinie Pie as briefly as they appear in this episode do serve as much welcomed reprieve. And despite meeting Emeber in Gauntlet Of Fire the writers are really shipping Sparity. Spike just happend too be wandering outside her shop. Granted as other episodes have established even if Spike is only their too carry Rarity's basket he is more than willing too do so. Well not just for Rarity, he would do the same for any of his friends. It was still a cute joke regardless.

Also you'd think Rarity would put up fliers weeks in advance of the fashion sjow, instead of two days before. I didn't know the premise of this episode before hand. Other than that by the title it was obiously going too be an Applejack episode. But when Rarity said she wanted Applejack as a judge I imediatley understood why. Applejack is direct and honest about her opinions, something that can be very helpful when trying too asses creative works.

Of course it isn't fair too spring something like this on your friend two days before the event. The next acene where Applejack, Apple Bloom, and Big Mac are bucking apples is actually good set up for the episode. Despite Apple Bloom's hat obviously only being their so Applejack can make a comment on it. It does illustrate howevr one of the problems with the set up for this episode.

Rarity wanted Applejack as a judge because Applejack understands what makes clothing practical. See if she had wanted her as a judge simply because of her honestey, then Applejack would have been a terrible pick. Actually any of the mane six besides Raroty would make terrible fashion judges, for various reasons. Applejack, as shown in the episode, is a terrible judge of fashion. There where some moments where the things she pointed out were actually reasonable. The problem was that she strayed into giving her opinion on the clothes at a fundmental level, instead of just on their practicallity. I will get more into that later.

Then we see two charcters we haven't seen in six seasons. Photo Finish and Hoetey Totey(yeah I spelled his name wrong). Which is actually a good thing for continuity. And even Coco Pommel gets some development. We don't see her but we do know that she has started her own fashion line. It is good too see that even after Slice Of Life background charcters still have their own lives going on and aren't summoned at the whim of the mane six.

When Applejack called Pommel's dress a disco ball, and Photo Finish feinted, that really highlights a better way for Applejack too have been portrayed in this episode. One thing that I feel like early on in the episode that the writers were going for was that Applejack was supposed too come off as a "every man" down too Earth type of gal. Applejack herself even said that she thought her everypony take on fashion could be valuable. If the episode had more moments with ridiculous fashion and Rarity and co ooing and awing and Applejack being tottlay mistified, it would have been far more entertaining.

The three new charcters introduced all have very nice designs. Lilly Lace, Star Streaker, and Inky Rose. Personally I like Lily Lace(I feel like Lily isn't her name now that I think about it) the best only because I thought her design was cute. Also when Applejack went on her little tirad about the fashion designers dresses I feel like this was the least deserved reaction from them. The point of judges isn't too congradulate you and pat you on the back. It's too critically analyze your work tear it too shreds and put back togther too see if it survives. Applejack in affect is the only real judge.

Applejack obiously gets carried away later on, but initally I do feel like she actually was doing a good job. Also I intially thought the conflict for this episode would be that Rarity was embarresed of Applejack's honestey. And even though it would have been slightly out of charcter I would have preffered that. The moral wasn't bad, it was actually a very releavent moral. The problem is the presentation.

One thing that I thought was weird was how Applejack didn't get fashion. I don't expect her too know the ins and outs of the fashion industry of course. But shouldn't she at least understand that fashion is subjective? It isn't just what one person wants, which is why their are so many differnt types of clothes. At one poi t Applejack says fashion is completley ridiculous. Which I remebr thinking "Yeah it is. But that's the point." Fashion(at least the type of fashion presented) isn't about practicality or usfullness it's about making a statment, an outward representation of who you are.

While Applejack is destroying hours of hardwork, Rarity is now exploring her new carrer as a death metal icon. That joke came completley out of left field and was tottaly worth it. Honestley if this episode had more random jokes like that I think it would have been a lot better than it was. Of course we do eventually get the understandble meltdown of the fashion judges and designers.

I don't know if we've seen Strawberry Sunrise(surprise or whatevr it is) before, but I feel like she's a new charcter, though I could be wrong. That whole interaction was a little overblown. It wouldn't have been so bad except for what Rarity and Applejack said afterwards. After realizing what a jerk she's been Applejack says she's sorry too Rarity about what she's done. Rarity seeing that Applejack is crying her eyes out says essentially "I'm glad too hear that dear."

I get the impression that the line was supposed too be taken as Rarity being glad that Applejack realized her mistake. But in context it comes off as Rarity being glad that Applejack is now miserable. Which if that was the intention, then how cruel can you be? Yes Rarity being mad at Applejack is totally justified. I agree with that. The problem is that Applejack in context is upset about how badly she messed up, and Rarity is totally unsympathetic. After seven seasons and Apple Jack's Day Off I got the impression that Rarity and Applejack where best friends.

Despite alll the terrible, unbearble Applejack moments earlier in the episode Applejack reddems herself in the last part of tthe episode. I would argue this is Applejack at her best. She is compassonite, honest, and resourcfull. It's also nice too see that Applejack's super strength carried over from Legend Of Everfree. I genuinley enjoyed watching Applejack fix her mistake. And if it was more of that I think it could have been a genuinley good episode.

I don't have anything else too say about the episode. But I do have something too say about the moral the episode presented. That you shouldn't be mean too someone or trash someones work just because it isn't too your personal tastes, especially if they worked hard on it. In it's simplist form the moral is about not being mean too someone for liking something differnt than you. And with how prevalent that is in our culture nowadays I couldn't agree with it more. Not at the exclusion of constructive criticism of course, but there is a differnce between constructive criticism and just being an a**hole. The problem is that the premise doesn't always connect well with the moral. The main problem is that Applejack was told to asses the dresses on practicality. That is exactly what she did. The problem is that it shifts froMm Applejack providing down too Earth practicality too her being mean for no reason. I feel like the moral doesn't work well because the premise centers around judges in a fashion show. The problem being is that judges do in fact judge. That is the entire reason they would be there. Anyways that's all I have too say.

This is the only review I will do early. Unless an episode really strikes me and I want too write about it. But for now it is one review a week following the U.S release. I could do more, but it took me about two hours too write this. And I just don't have time too write more than two reviews a week. Anyways if you bothered too read this I hope you enjoyed it.

This was a terrible episode! First off, it was Rarity who had the stupid Idea to ask an ignoramus like Apple Jack  to be a judge and for what purpose?  Even Apple Jack admitted that she wasn't qualified to be a judge..  Secondly, judges are prohibited from partaking in the design process to keep bias down, which means Rarity screwed up again, by letting the judges participate in the design process. Thirdly, Why would a entire design contest be canceled just because one judge didn't like the designs? They asked for her opinion and she gave it(admittedly she did go a little over board), and the fact remains is that she is a ignoramus meaning she would not know how to judge in a fashion contest as judges require parameters to judge by.. Fourthly, she was supposed to judge for practicality, which she did in fact do, but this is also Rarity's fault, because since when has the fashion industry ever been practical? How about since never; this is the fashion industry we are talking about.  Rarity then proceeded to  actually smile when Apple Jack felt miserable would reveal a more sinister element to Rarity's character.     Finally, WHAT WAS THE POINT? IF IN THE FINAL OUTCOME THE CONTESTANTS WERE ALL WINNERS ANYWAY WHY HIRE FREAKING JUDGES?!?!  The drama  of this episode WAS POINTLESS...  YET having them all declared winners is what Rarity wanted, so in essence Rarity created turmoil for NO REASON Whatsoever...   Complaining about an ignoramus's views being ignorant is like complaining that there is salt in Salt Lake, or complaining that there are rocks in Yellowstone, what did Rarity expect? Rarity was being a pointlessly stupid for the sake of being stupid, and blaming it all on Apple Jack..  This episode deserves to be called an animated atrocity on several levels..  In the end, it doesn't matter how long or how hard a person works to an end goal if the work is garbage it is still garbage regardless, and you can't expect an honest ignoramus to appreciate your fanciful garbage that they don't understand ..   This episode shows what is wrong with the culture nowadays.. Every one is looking for sweet lies and they blame honest people for being honest, only because the honest people destroy the illusion..   There was no point to having judges in the fashion show in the end anyway since they were all winners, which is even more insulting  than anything else..
