Japanese Kit Kat Candy Bar Review Part 1

Twisted Cyclone 🚓

So yesterday, my package of Japanese imported Kit Kat bars arrived in the mail after a whole month of "expedited" shipping. I have decided to type up a blog about it all so far and my opinions of the flavors that I have tried.

1) Green Tea Kit Kat:

This one was an interesting flavor to me. As someone who has never tried green tea before (I only drink sweet tea), I had no idea what to expect from this one. It was not bad but I did taste a lot of the chocolate that was still in the bar itself so there wasn't a whole lot of distinct "green flavor" taste to me. However, it did leave a minor aftertaste but it wasn't so bad. I would try this one again but if someone offered it to be but it wasn't one that I'd be overly excited for. Overall rating: 7.5/10

2) Raspberry Kit Kat:

This is one of the ones that I would love to see imported in the US. As soon as you bite into the Kit Kat bar, the Raspberry flavor rushes in. It was a very sweet raspberry flavor too and pretty right on with it too. Almost as if I was actually eating a raspberry (kudos to them for achieving that). Overall, this is a Kit Kat flavor I would buy again and one that I would recommend to others too. Overall rating: 9/10

3) Caramel Pudding Kit Kat:

Okay, so I didn't know what to expect with this one really. After all, I've never heard of "caramel pudding" anyways (Is it in the US?). This has been the best one that I have tried so far. The caramel flavor is very sweet. In fact, it was so good that I wanted to have another bar (don't have any more :( ). This is definitely a flavor I would buy again and recommend to others. Hopefully down the road, it will be in US stores too (one can only hope). Overall Rating: 10/10 PERFECT!

4) Shinshu Apple Kit Kat:

this was a flavor that was pretty mediocre to me (and I like apples too). At first It was pretty good, as if I was biting on a freshly ripe apple but then the flavor turned sour and it left a very bad after taste in my mouth that was nearly impossible to get rid of, even with soda. This is a flavor I can say that I don't recommend others to try all that much. It was a bit of a letdown flavor to me. Overall Rating: 5/10

I have not tried all of the flavors that I have just yet so I will be making a part 2 of this review. So far, it's been a very interesting experience to try all of these different Kit Kats. I never knew there could be sooo many different flavors of them and it's been very fun to try them all too.

Japanese Kit Kats are a fascinating treasure trove of idiosyncrasy for me (and clearly for others as well, judging by your review here). Thanks for posting your thoughts here - reviews of this weird breed of candy bar are always entertaining reads.

On a related note, I concur about the flavor of the Shinshu apple - the initial taste was decent before spiraling into a more sickly, artificial sensation - in a way, it reminded me of that cheap apple-scented hairspray you occasionally find backstage in local theaters or in cosmetics stores. The green tea (traditional) I recall being relatively decent, but the stronger green tea flavor was pretty overbearing (think swallowing a powerfully bitter bundle of herbs) and the pure matcha bar was more than a little reminiscent of grass (despite allegedly being accurate to its basis). Of the flavors that I personally tasted, the Japanese orange (this consisting of genuinely orange-coloured chocolate, a pleasant surprise following the drabness of its Western equivalent) was probably the best, with a well-balanced citrus twang and a suitably complementary white chocolate base (the wasabi flavor, whilst luridly green and conceptually weird, was also surprisingly palatable), whilst the worst was either the apple or the Azuki red bean cookie flavor (bitter, smoky bean essence and mass-produced white chocolate mostly don't mix - this was no exception).
