so first a little information about this show, it first aired in 1967, the same year my dad was born (its no surprise he grew up watching it) around this time several other cartoons based around marvel comics were around, but none of them were as good, heck, they weren't really animation just comic book pages that had some movement, and the whole thing was narrorated, this show was the closest to an actual cartoon in the sense we are used to (that and the fantastic 4 cartoon that was running at the time) so now lets begin with first episode of 60''s Spider Man

after a frame reminding us that this cartoon is in color, we start off with the classic theme song that everyone has heard, but we begin the actual episode with Peter Parker driving down a hill complaining about J. Jonah Jameson sending him to go photo graph "mystery lights" also nice car

eventually a bolder drops in front of him and he is sent over a cliff and his car is supported up by a tree

yeah, i'm sure that tree can support a 2 ton car that just fell from 50 ft, Parker changes into Spider Man and thinks of a way down he decides to lower him self using some web, you'll notice that Spider Mans web does what ever the plot needs it to changing shape all on its own, seen here, just one button press of his web shooters did this

after building himself a harness out of web he sets the car down, on the way down however his car bumps into a set of rocks and triggers some lights, he of course gets out and investigates, upon entering the cave he finds a typical mad scientist's laboratory in the 1960's

shortly after however a net of chains descends on Spidey and he is caught, Doctor Octopus is revealed to be the villain and we get a title card revealing the episode name as "The Power Of Doctor Octopus" after it goes away the doctor shows his newest invention that will help him to take over the universe, forget the world, this guy has bigger ambitions! he shows Spider Man on a view screen that he plans on attacking queens, which Spidey reminds us that's where he lives, Doctor Octopus then says that hes sent a letter to J. J. about his plans, to warn him so he reduce loss of life, so a few things are wrong with this, first off, he sends this letter not to the police, or the governor, but to the CEO of a newspaper company, i don't see how that would help, and second, if hes planning on taking over the universe, why does he care about loss of life? you would think that he would like all that collateral damage, i hope he realizes that if he wants to take over the universe, some people are going to have to die, minimizing loss of life just seems odd for a villain, well anyway after he says this we cut to the Daily Bugle, Jameson and Betty Brant are in the office (this was before Mary Jane was introduced so she functions as the main love interest in this show) J.J. of course doesn't buy it, Betty shows concern about peter, wondering where he is at, this causes one of many of Jamesons rants about teenagers, apparently in the 46ish years since this cartoon aired, teens haven't changed at all,after his rant, we return to Doctor Octopus's lair, taking the opertunity Spider Man breaks the chains just as Doctor Octopus enters the room, he attacks Spider Man with his metal tentacles i will give credit here, the sound effects the tentacles make sounds like they are doing damage as a heavy "CLANK" sound is heard, Spider Man of course doges and heads for the exit, but Doctor Octopus stops him by dropping a cage on top of him, this is the same place where he dropped the chain net, how much stuff does he have up there? also nice pose there

we cut to Betty Brant driving down the hill informing us that she drove out there looking for peter, she finds his car, i guess the bolder that was blocking the way moved away, she gets out of her car and looks around until a jerk cop scares her, causing her to let out a blood curdling scream, just look at that

after she identifies her self to the random cop she is spotted by Doctor Octopus's view finder, also the cage Spider Man was in has moved over to the computer, Doctor Octopus opens the secret entrance, but then we cut to Spider Man back in the chain net for a few seconds, then it shows Betty walking in, Spider Man tries to warn her but its too late and she is captured, she asks Spider Man how he got captured and he says he wonders that himself, and some of you may recognize this picture

Betty is handcuffed to the cage and Doctor Octopus reveals what his machine does, he says that it will send electronic pulses through every water, gas, and electric line causing shock waves that will "demolish everything" sure this is quite damaging, but i don't think this device will give you power to rule the universe

Betty expresses shock that hes really going to do it as Spider Man attempts to break free proclaiming that he cant bend the bars even though he is shown clearly bending the bars

after that fails he shoots a web at a lever and unlocks himself Doctor Octopus retaliates by pushing a few leavers, this shows us another feature of this cartoon, Spider Mans spider sense takes forever to do anything, in this case he stops to rub his head, then acknowledges that his spider sense is going off, Betty has to warn Spidey of the huge cinder block falling from the ceiling, Doctor Octopus then retaliates with a laser gun, because every mad scientist lab back then had one, Spider Man escapes by climbing up the walls and to the ceiling Doctor Octopus gets the drop on him by activating the "giant ventilator fan"

yeah that's big, and another thing, Spider Mans spider sense is very inconsistent its never clear what sets it off and what doesn't so because of that Doc turns on the fan and sends Spidey crashing to the ground, knocking him out again, resulting in his second capture, it cuts to Jameson in his office, he calls the police asking for them to look for Peter and Betty, after another rant about teenagers, his phones, yes phones start ringing, all of them complaining about various utilities like gas lines, power lines, and water lines going haywire, but i must ask, why are these people calling him and not the police? and why does he have so many phones on his desk? even on any random shot of his desk he has at least 3 phones on his desk

we cut back to Docs lab where he is watching his view finder as it destroys the city, Spider Man uses his web to function as lock picks and frees him and Betty, she runs out, oh and the cave door is open now, Spider Man and Doctor Octopus face off, Spider Man tires to web up his tentacles but just makes it in to a big club

after he destroys a rock, he gets ready for another strike but Spider Man blinds him with his web then ties him up, it cuts to Betty talking to the police when Peter shows up, he gives an excuse then it cuts to the Daily Bugle, Jameson questions them but as soon as Spider Man is brought up he ignores them and the episode ends shortly after, this episode was enjoyable and fun

but oh! we aren't done yet! each episode of 60's Spider Man has 2 episodes in it, so lets look at the second one

we start the episode in a hot summers day, Peter is walking along to go to a person called Dr. Smarter (its so hilariously generic) when suddenly the side walk turns to ice, and everything around him freezes up, but his amazement is cut short when he hears Dr. Smarter yelling for help, it cuts to inside the house and we see the attacker

and then we get the title card labeled "Sub Zero For Spidey" Peter changes into Spider Man and bust through the window, he attempts to shoot his web but the ice monster just freezes the web then retaliates by shooting icicles out of his wrists

and no joke, they make a "blop" sound as they come out, real threatening, after its done it just leaves, Spider Man talks with Smarter and suggests that it was after him, you have to love this face of pure terror

Spider Man goes out in search of the monster, and after a swinging montage, he finds him, however once the monster spots him he freezes the tower Spidey is on, turning it into solid ice, leaving Spider Man in a very bad situation

Spider Man escapes and swings off,it cuts to the Daily Bugle as Jameson is getting reports of ice in the middle of a heat wave when Parker comes in, Jameson gets a report of an iceberg in New York harbor and sends Parker away, he gets his pictures and goes back to Smarters place, they discuss where the attacks could have come from, and they come up with the only logical conclusion, Pluto the "coldest planet in the universe" back then i don't think they knew just how big the universe was, and this was back when Pluto was a planet, but suddenly 2 of them show up and freeze Spider Man and Smarter and take him away, it then cuts to...the aliens transporting Smarter to their iceberg lair in a motor boat

just...ok whatever, it cuts back to Spider Man thawing out, he puts it together that they must be in the iceberg and runs off, but first he stops by home to make some adjustments to his web shooters and builds himself a heater unit, this happens quite a bit in the show, he stops by his house and makes some adjustment to his gear, this heater unit however is...a little over kill i think

so after that he swings over to the Statue of Liberty and oh yeah in this show Spider Man has a telescope

after scouting out the area he swims over there, no doubt getting hypothermia he enters the ice burg and after going through a few traps he finds where the aliens took Smarter, he leaps on of the aliens and is about to beat the crap out of it when Smarter stops him and explains that they are friendly, ignoring the 2 murder attempts on Spider Man, and he reveals that they are indeed from Pluto their leader comes out and ill admit, his design is pretty bad ass

the leader explains that they stopped by for repairs and needed Smarter, who just so happened to be working on a space warp control, i have no idea what that is, but ok, the ice burg turns into a diamond and flys off, it cuts to the Bugle where Parker shows Jameson the picture trying to explain it, if it was today you know the boss would call photo shopped on it

Jameson panics about being the laughing stock of the newspaper business and we end the episode on sexual tension

again this episode was enjoyably campy
