After a very heated first competition, we are left with 18 chefs. We lost Sasha thanks to a poor use of a crustacean from the last episode and the surviving 18 must go head to head in their very first team challenge. For those of you who do not know, the team challenge is where the best two chefs of the previous episode’s elimination challenge are made into team captains. They must then choose a team to complete a challenge presented to them by the three judges. The winning team is safe from elimination whereas the losers must cook for their lives. The leaders of the first challenge are Jordon and Jessie.

The challenge is rather interesting for it involves feeding just over 300 children at an elementary school. Jordon immediately feels out of his element as he openly admits he doesn’t have much experience cooking for kids. Jessie is in the same boat so right away the two chefs begin choosing those whom they think would be best suited for kids’ meals.

Jessie’s team included:

  • Lynn
  • Bethy
  • Beth
  • Bime
  • Natasha
  • Bri
  • Luca
  • Malcom

Whereas Jordon chose:

  • Savanna
  • James
  • Eddie
  • Johnny
  • Krissi
  • Adriana
  • Howard
  • Kathy

The rules for this competition were that each dish must include one of the following: Starch, Protein, Veggies, and Fruit. Jessie’s team went for a more risky maneuver of making chicken teriyaki with corn, rice, and a strawberry crumble. Jordon’s team went for the more familiar and safe route of using Spaghetti & Meatballs, green beans, and an apple crisp.

Right away Gordon discovers a problem with Jordon’s choice of meal. In order to make enough meatballs for the 300 kids, his team would need to make at the LEAST 600 meatballs. When this started to slow down his team, Jordon changed the menu to Meat Sauce instead of Meatballs. Everything seemed to be moving forward until James discovered the water for their greenbeans hadn’t begun boiling thus not cooking their beans!

On the other team, Jessie’s teriyaki sauce fell flat. It was too salty at first which resulted in them needing to water it down. Luckily, her team was able to salvage it thus making it sweet enough for the kids. Her team’s biggest downfall, however, was the fact that they were unable to keep up with the demand. Near the end of the challenge, there were several kids who were not able to get a plate from the red team.

In the end, it would be the red team who surprisingly won out against the blue team. This was a personal surprise to me as I was very sure the kids would choose pasta over chicken but this just proves, once again, that kids are able to surprise us all. This leaves the blue team for the elimination challenge.

Now, in the previous blog, I shared how I was rooting for Jordon. In the audition episode, he was so passionate and loved his mother so much that my heart went out to him. However, seeing his attitude towards his fellow competitors is making me dislike him. After choosing two of his team mates to be safe, he choose himself to be safe. From a competition standpoint that’s fine, but it was when he began to continue his bullying of Krissi from the rafters (commenting how her cheesecake looked like her) that I started to wish him to be knocked out of the competition.

Luckily, her cheesecake tasted better than it looked and she easily impressed the judges for the second day in a row. Eddie’s berry topping ended up bleeding into his cheesecake but his taste and texture was amazing, easily allowing such a minor mistake to be overlooked. Finally there was Kathy whose berry topping wow’d the judges allowing her to be the third challenger safe from elimination. This left Johnny, Adriana, and Savanna as the worst three. Luckily, Johnny was spared as his cake was only slightly better than the other two ladies. In the end, it was Adriana’s use of canned fruit (A personal pet peeve of Gordon’s for anyone whose watched Kitchen Nightmares) that got her eliminated.

As of right now, I am rooting for Savanna, Johnny, and most of all Krissi. Jordon no longer has my vote due to his lousy attitude. Stay tuned for the next episode of Master Chef Recap!
