Opinions on Equestria Girls.

This post contains SPOILERS.

Consider yourself warned if you haven't seen the film yet.

So, I FINALLY managed to pull my shit together and watch Equestria Girls, and...

Meh.

It was just kind of "meh". Leaning towards the negative side of "meh", in fact.

Sure, it was better than I expected, but then again, I watched it with the lowest possible expectations, so they weren't that hard to exceed in the first place, I guess.

My general impression of the film was that as with the season three finale, there was WAY too much crammed into a way too restricted timeframe.

All throughout the film I found myself scratching my head, and literally slapping myself, while shouting out loud "What?!", "How?!", and "Why?!"

There were too many - *ahem* -plot holes (goddamn you, fandom) and the pacing felt really off.

Right off the bat I had a HUGE issue with the premise;

How come Celestia had never bothered to inform Twilight about Sunset Shimmer earlier, when she clearly knew she was a possible threat?

Why did they send Twilight off alone, without any assistance or backup? Sure, they gave a bullshit reason of "If they all were to go, it would disrupt the balance of both dimensions", but I don't buy that.

Why was Twilight Sparkle the only pony in the film, who did not have a corresponding alternate universe counterpart?

Am I REALLY supposed to believe no one had managed to discover the portal that was hidden into A FUCKING HORSE STATUE RIGHT IN THE DEAD-CENTER OF A SCHOOL YARD?!

How come none of Twilight's alternate universe friends questioned her incredibly insane-sounding story of her being a pony princess from another world?

And those were only the big problems.

Now, I don't feel like going into the nit-pick mode, so, rather than doing that, I'll talk about what I liked in the film:

Comedy.

Yes, sir, indeed. If there is one thing these writers do correctly, it's the comedy.

I especially loved the library scene, with the CMC reading the comments on their music video on "YouTube", or whatever. "Epic Fail".

The character designs actually ended up looking pretty decent.

Sure, they felt a bit off at first, but after only about 20 minutes in, I had already grown accustomed to seeing them. Fluttershy looked especially cute (but doesn't she always?)

I would have liked it better, if the designs of the human mane 6 had been a bit more unique and personalized, instead of everyone wearing a dress, knee-high boots, and such.

Minor complaint, though.

I LOVED what they did with Spike in this film.

I really felt that he was the one character that kept this entire thing afloat right to the end.

Twilight and Spike have from the very start had this sibling-type of relationship, but this was the first time I was actually invested in what's going on between them.

There were moments where I felt genuinely worried about them being stuck in this situation.

I definitely have tons of new-found respect for Spike, and now count him as one of my favourite characters.

I hope to see more episodes of him in the future.

Now, with all that said, would I recommend Equestria Girls?

Kinda-ish, I guess.

I mean, it's not like it was the worst flick I've seen this year; Man of Steel takes that shit-covered trophy.

Hell, EQG wasn't even that bad.

As I said earlier, it was just kind of bland for me, aside from a few nice moments.

If you're a hardcore brony, who just HAS to see and collect anything and everything pony-related, or a type of moviegoer, who just enjoys good animation, and entertainment, you'll probably like this movie fine.

For me, it was just too contrived, jumbled, and rushed and the negatives unfortunately outweigh the positives.

Score: 5.5/10.

Also may I add that when Twilight hugged Flash in that scene, the certains automatically went up, as in to lighten the scene.

Is there a ghost to do that? No one is bothered by that? wat?
