Interesting grammar facts you may not have known
It seems like a lot of people have trouble with grammar, so I thought I'd share some grammar tips that you might not have known before.
1. Affect vs. Effect
-Affect is used as a verb.
-Effect is used as a noun.
2. Farther vs. Further
-Farther is used for measurable distances.
-Further is used for abstract distances you can't measure.
3. Lay vs. Lie
-Lay is used when there is an object involved. (Example: I lay the cup on the table.)
-Lie is used when there is no object involved. (Example: I lie on the bed.)
-Lay is the past tense of Lie (Example: Yesterday, I lay on the bed.)
-Laid is the past tense of Lay (Example: Yesterday, I laid the cup on the table.)
4. Ensure vs. Assure
-Ensure is used to imply a guarantee that something will happen.
-Assure is used to imply the removal of doubt from someone's mind.
5. Who vs. Whom
-Who is used as a pronoun for the subject of the sentence.
-Whom is used as a pronoun for the object of the sentence.
