Season 4 Has Begun! My Thoughts on the Premiere (Spoilers)

It is finally here everypony! After a horrendous hiatus filled with questions, anger, sadness, and overall huge negativity by some in the fandom, season 4 has begun. It feels like it was just yesterday that season 3 started and it is a crazy feeling. Watch out, some spoilers ahead.

Anyways, how was the premiere for the season? A lot of tension has built up over the months for some and while I myself was keeping a very positive attitude about the season, I did have some slight doubts, more on that later. I can safely say though, that the opening was fantastic. It did so many things right that I had goosebumps all throughout. Many of the burning questions that have accumulated since MMC have been answered and answered well.

This is all I wanted to do while watching the premiere, I was that excited.

The premiere had so many great things that it is difficult to begin describing it. Firstly, I noticed that the animation in some areas is only getting better. The lighting during the Nightmare Moon scene was incredibly well done and it gave the scene so much atmosphere.I had goosebumps throughout these scenes.

Second, it answered so many questions that worried some others (and to a slight extent, me). The biggest had to do with Twilicorn. While there are still a couple of questions that need answers, they hit so many right notes. As a princess, Twilight isn't some 'Mary sue' at this point. She is still learning. That was the first question answered and it was done well. The second question was Twilight leaving her friends and her friends becoming useless. Twilight will not be abandoning her friends, this was addressed in such a great way. Twilight fully acknowledges that while she WILL have extra duties and responsibilities now, she still will stay close to her friends and not abandon them. This also confirms that her friends are just as important as ever, maybe even moreso now. Twilight is still her adorkable self and this change in responsibilities is fantastic. It shows progression of the characters and the show itself. Personally I hope to see much more of this.

Another thing that this shows clearly, is that the writers are fully comfortable with moving forward in the series. I cannot express how much I love this. My mane fear was them backing out on the Twilicorn thing and it is clear as day that they are comfortable with the change and are moving forward.

Another point to this, was the Elements of Harmony. These have apparently been abandoned now and that is an interesting twist. It is now apparently being replaced by a new lockbox thingy that we know nothing about. This was very well done as well and it gives us a totally new major thing to think and wonder about.

The characters were all in true form and we even got some juicy backstory. Sure it was done through a random potion that Zecora conveniently had, but I do think it worked for what it was. The flashbacks made up for any cliché with that. Discord was also hilarious here and that shows that even while reformed, Discord is just as prankster-like and fun as ever.

Yep.

On a random note, there was not a single song in the entire premiere. This was interesting to see given that they can be used to help push a plot along at a quickened pace. That was not the case here and it actually helped the premiere as it had many serious moments.

The only real problem that I might have seen was some pacing issues. Some parts went by really fast while others went slower and had me in huge anticipation. It was a bit inconsistent.

One other complaint I have heard from a few bronies is that Twilight was having trouble flying when she clearly flew well in MMC. This is an inconsistency yes, but it is justified in my opinion. Her flying like that in MMC basically was used for the sole purpose of ending the episode. Inconsistent? Yes. Completely forgivable? Well for me, yep. This complaint actually feels like some harsh nitpicking.

Those damn wings sure did ruin the show. Amiright?

Despite that, this was a fantastic start to season 4. The fact that the writers are continuing to move forward with the series makes me incredibly excited for the show's future. We have 24 more episodes to look forward to so we have many fun times ahead. smile.png Overall I feel that the premiere has given us a wonderful start for a wonderful season.

I don't do these kind of posts often so I apologize for it being crappy. I just wanted to give my opinion because I loved it and I am very excited for the future.

I was reading through this with a very critical eye, and happily enough it was a good article. Nice.
