I was creating this post for the Creative Resources Section of the forums when I realized something on the second hour of working this, is this even really needed? Anyway, take a look and decide if I should continue working on this.

Welcome to The Artists Resource Guide to Drawing Ponies and Beyond!

The purpose of this thread is to answer common questions which refer to drawing ponies (and beyond!) while providing links and resources to help further ones understanding and knowledge to drawing. This thread is aimed towards all levels of experience and will require the support of everyone to keep all guides and resources up to date. While I'll chip in my own words, keep in mind that I'm no professional and I'm speaking from personal experience. Like all sources of information on the net, just because it's here doesn't mean it's true. Be sure to critically think about what you're reading and remember, there's no 100% correct way to draw anything.

Before we begin, I'd highly suggest visiting Stephen McCraine's Doodle Alley. Every piece he has there will provide insight on the creative process and will help you get a better idea on how one should approach their artistic side. Most of you will want to skip to part three, The Next Step - Guides, Resources and Quick Answers. I created section one and two because I'd like to believe that a story which comes from the heart and soul will help you connect and gain a better understanding that drawing isn't something mysterious and only attainable through talent. It's a skill, just like everything else in life.

Either way, here's hoping ya found something of use here stranger! See ya around.

1. The Common Story of Many Artists - The Beginning

So you've just finished watching a new show with a two parter intro. The episodes were fantastic and you find yourself connecting with a certain Lavender Pony Unicorn thing more so than you'd like to admit. Out of impulse, you decide that you want to draw this character! I mean heck, you've seen hundreds of jaw dropping drawings on the net, this'll be as easy as 1, 2, 3. You grab pencil, paper, and you sit yourself down at your desk. "I'll start with the head, that's a good place to begin" you think to yourself, and you apply medium to paper. Soon after starting, you begin to see issues with your drawing. Naturally, you erase what doesn't look right and reapply your lines with careful precision this time around. Somehow, though, you still seemed to have made yet another mistake. Once again, you erase and apply medium once more. Unbeknownst to you, you spend several hours repeating this task over and over again.

After spending what seems like an eternity, you finally finish your drawing. Your illustration is the head of that Lavender Pony Unicorn thing, donned with both horn and mane. You look at it and find yourself upset with what you drew. The picture looks nothing like what you originally sought to draw. Your lines are a shaky, unaligned mess, parts are out of proportion and the character looks like a horrible mess. You find yourself thinking about the other drawings people have created and then compare it to your own, what you produced is nothing short of an offense to the creative works of the show. To make matters worse, you find that five hours have passed since you started! Frustrated, you toss your image into the trash and decide to try again tomorrow. The next day comes and the following happens.

You find yourself apprehensive, the thought of drawing somewhat scares you because you can't help but think about what happened yesterday. Your mind begins to wander, is it really worth learning how to draw this character? All your negative feelings of yesterdays drawing surface once more and you already find yourself frustrated before you even begin. You decide to give up, and instead proceed to play Team Fortress 2. A game which is second nature in comparison to drawing. Thus, your drawing career died before it could even begin.

Many times, I found myself struggling when I first began drawing because most of the time I'd give up before even starting. I'd remember amazing images which other artists have drawn and found myself in a hopeless situation. I would commonly ask myself, "How would I ever be able to measure up to them, these masters in which I was but a novice?" To me, it didn't matter how much time I spent on the drawing because it would always suck. There was something I had forgotten though, something which is important for everyone to remember when learning a new skill. This thought didn't even enter my mind until my first beginning drawing class, that I realized that nobody starts out with the magical word called "talent."

Not 100% sure right now. I am waiting for a webcam. But we could cook up something. I'm sure. :P

Alright, we'll just put it on the back burner and play it out from there.

Due to a silent majority (lol nobody said anything) I'll focus my time elsewhere and not finish this. Maybe it's because I have a wall of text or perchance it's due to me not proving myself. Either way, I suppose if one doesn't spend time searching, then they clearly don't care about it.
