  1. Discord was not really evil in same way Tirek was anyway. He wanted to have fun, not destroy everything. He cant really be reformed but more like guided to be more friendly and accepted in a society. He didn't care about friendship because he didn't understand its value. He was naive enough to actually trade Fluttershy friendship with Tirek. Friendship, altruism, empathy and many other traits of a good person is just very exotic for him but even in Return of Harmony he was more fascinated in toying with ponies and clinging toward social interactions instead destroying everything right after getting free. He just didnt understand that the approach of being nice instead nasty was more acceptable.

So for me evil is something born from negative emotions like Nightmare Moon or from dark magic like Sombra. Discord is more like cultural differences, Discord just didnt understand the way of the ponies live and that the ruler is not the one who is the strongest.

Pretty much what I said in the video, albeit with a bit more emphasis on the roles of 'Harmony,' 'Order,' and 'chaos,' in how they determine Discord's nature.  I would almost go so far as to say that Discord was never necessarily "evil," for the reasons that you listed! ;)

  2. Seeing how Q and Discord are the same, I'm not too sure what they might do with Discord now, he already knows about friendship, but there's still much more to learn. What is his purpose in Equestria.

Maybe as a defender, who knows? That might be the reason why Celestia made Twi and the others reformed him, because she knew Discord was the least evil of all the rogues gallery before Tirek, and that he could easily turn good and serve in the side of order.

Celestia might have known that Tirek was going to escape some day and Discord would be the perfect candidate to stop him. But Tirek was much more dangerous than the characters from the show and part of the audience thought, turning Discord back to his evil routes.

Discord may surprise us in the future. And who knows? Maybe more dangers from the past generations will also confront Discord. Tirek defeated and humiliated him, but what would Discord do against other evil baddies from G1, like Grogar, the Ram Necromancer?

    https://derpicdn.net/media/W1siZiIsIjIwMTIvMDkvMTQvMTlfMTZfMjhfMjA3Xzk4MDI4X19VTk9QVF9fc2FmZV9kaXNjb3JkX2cxX2FydGlzdF9wZWFjaGlla2VlbmllIl1d/98028__safe_discord_g1_artist-peachiekeenie_grogar.png

Definitely.  As demonstrated in my video, that concern of Discord being literally chaos incarnate does make you wonder what, exactly, his role is in Equestria.  I took the perspective of retaining a figurative balance between total order and total chaos; you could almost consider applying the typical morality alignment system employed in many tabletop RPGs (In this case, post-reformation Discord would be Chaotic Neutral, and post-Tirek would be Chaotic Good).

I definitely think that Celestia overestimated Discord's resolve and/or underestimated Tirek's manipulative capabilities, or else she somehow knew that Discord's betrayal was necessary for the final key to be discovered (#alicornlogichurtsmybrain).

I think that there is a lot of future potential for Discord.  I mean, of all the characters  in the show that we have become acquainted with, Discord has probably changed more over the course of the last two seasons than any other (with the exception of Twilight, potentially), so I would be interested to see if they focus at all on him coming to terms with his new conditions (which they have already done to an extent, but more could be done with it).  I do like that Grogar comic that you linked; I think that would be a fantastic approach to an episode if they chose to bring Grogar back!

  3. I really need to watch more Next Generation, haha!  I knew that Discord and Q were similar characters, but I didn't realise that they were *that* similar!

And yeah, of the many examples of anthropomorphic personification used in visual media, I think that I see more embodiments of chaos than just about any other fundamental abstraction (with the exception of Death, maybe).  Not that I'm complaining at all; those tend to make for more entertaining characters!

And about Discord being reformed, Discord already learnt the lesson after being betrayed by Tirek. He's not going back to evil. No more.

Indeed, I fully agree.  But conflict involving his nature is always a possibility, as he becomes more accustomed to this new life of his.  I for one am interested to see how they continue to develop his character going into Season Five!

  4. How about you keep the Silver part, but add sterling to it.

    Sterling Silver Quill.

    Fancy.

    2fancy4me.

With a name such as that even the Canterlot Elite could not possibly turn me away! XD

Anypony else want to weigh in before I make a final decision?

  5. Well, a lot of the Ponies have names that incorporate an aspect of their appearance, like Rainbow Dash or Pinkie Pie, so maybe you could align the first part of the name with that.

For that reason, I suggest Fox Quill.  Because my strange brain sees your color scheme and immediately thinks of foxes (even though your pony is brown and not reddish).  And also because Foxes are clever and quick and in a lot of Aesop fables and other traditional stories like Chaucer's Chanticleer.  I dunno, though.  Whatever you jive with.   :P

Ooh, I like that.  For some reason, I really like that!  I'm going to keep that one on the side-burner as a definite possibility!  No final decisions yet, but man, that one sounds good!  Thank you so much for the suggestion!

  6. You don't want something that doesn't have a ring to it. It doesn't sound super traditional or very MLP like. (What happened to names like Goldie-locks or Dew Drop?) Your choices sound more like a warriorcat name. (Like Dovewing, Bluestar, Fireheart, or Hawkfeather.) So for that, I don't quite like or choose any of the names you listed. Maybe if you told me more about your personality and such- I don't know you too well, TBH I can help you recommend pony names for your ponysona.

I get what you are saying.  As you can see from my original post, I was doing my best to keep the meaning behind the name similar.  At the moment, most people I've asked elsewhere seem to like Gilded Quill, but I can see how that would be un-MLP-esque.  Basically, I am trying to make my name communicate my love of writing.  And, as I said in the original post, I would prefer to keep the "Quill" part, so that I can still use "Quill'd In" in the title of my analysis videos.

I guess, while I would prefer to be as MLP-esque as possible, I would much rather have my name define my character, to an extent.

  7.

I think you're the only one who can find The Perfect Name  :)

If I was you I would start all over again with a completely new name.

Sadly, that perfect name was Silver Quill.  I genuinely put a lot of thought into that one, which is why it is so hard for me to change it now! D:

I'd just like to point out that when I saw Silver Quill get popular, I thought he was you :proud:

Anyway, I like the name "Aureate Quill" the best out of what you've said :D I think it fits your general demeanor quite well, assuming your ponysona has the same personality as you :please:

Ah, if only, if only!  But thanks for the compliment (I'm just going to go ahead and take that as a compliment ^_^ )

Hmm, I like Aureate Quill as well!  Some have told me where I have asked elsewhere that it is a touch too long or strange sounding, but I dunno, I'm seriously thinking about it!  Thanks for your input, Ghosty! :D

  8.

I feel it's usually a good idea to name your Ponysona after yourself, since it kinda is yourself as a pony, after all.

True, but I would rather not use my real name on the internet.  Plus, I like the idea of keeping it pony-esque sounding.  ^_^

    Mercury Quill?

Mercury is also known as quicksilver, the only metal that stays liquid at room temperature :P

Hmm, that's an interesting one.  Kind of catchy, too.  I'll think about it, thanks!

  9. Greetings, everypony!

So, I have been known as "Silver Quill" for almost my entire experience as a Brony, and until recently, everything was fine!  However, the sudden semi-recent popularity of the analyst/Youtuber "MLP-Silver-Quill" has been causing me a lot of problems, with people confusing me with him and/or vice versa (it was the worst at BronyCon this year, with people asking for my autograph thinking that I was him).  Now don't get me wrong, I am not blaming MLP-Silver-Quill for anything, and I thoroughly enjoy both his YouTube videos and his DeviantArt stuff, so it is for both of our sakes that I seek to change my OC's name.

And that is where you come in.

Over the months I have grown quite attached to "Silver Quill" as my pony name; after all, I chose it specifically because I believed that it did a good job representing my personality and interests ("Silver" -> 'silvertongue', "Quill" -> writing utensil).  It will be tough departing from "Silver Quill," but I believe it to be necessary.

So, any ideas?  If at all possible, I would like to keep the "Quill" part of my name, because I have enjoyed using it as a fun-sounding name for my YouTube Vidoes (e.g. "Quill'd In: Why Pony Analysis?"), but hey, if somepony has a good, catchy suggestion, I will definitely think about it!

So, some names that I have thought up thus far in an effort to keep the personal significance of the name are:

    • Gilded Quill  ("Gilded" - to give a bright, pleasing, or specious aspect to.)
    • Aureate Quill ("Aureate" - characterized by an ornate style of writing or speaking.)
    • Embroidered Quill ("Embroidered" - to adorn or embellish rhetorically, especially with ornate language or fictitious details)
    • Steady Quill

So let me know if you like any of those ideas, or even better, if you have an idea of your own!  I appreciate any and all help that I could get with this,it really does mean a lot to me! :D  And feel free to check out the attached image of my OC's cutie mark for further inspiration, if needed!

    Thanks a tonne in advance!!

    ~Silver Quill

P.S. THANK GOD for the internet!

  10. Greetings, everypony!

So last week I hit 400 subscribers on YouTube, and I really wanted to do something to show my appreciation!  So... why not cover more Frozen songs?  Here's a cover of "Reindeer(s) are Better than People," with a ponified twist; far from my best work of lyric writing [or singing, for that matter] but I hope that everypony enjoys, all the same!!!

    http://youtu.be/yfJlmdV4Uog

    Or SoundCloud, if you prefer:

    https://soundcloud.com/silverquill-1/ponies-are-better-than-people

    Lyrics:
Me: Ponies are better than people
    Macintosh, isn't that true?

Macintosh: Yeah, people will tease you
and cuss you and hate you
Every one of them's rotten, 'cept you

Me: Hey, if you say so...
But people aren't cartoons, like ponies
    Macintosh, isn't that right?

    Macintosh: That's once again true,
    to everyone, 'cept you

Me: Fair point, let's call it a night

    Macintosh: Good night

Me: Don't let the parasprite's bite
  11. Well lets take a step back here and evaluate what exactly 'omnipotence' means.  (I would suggest reading the Wikipedia article for some nice, quick, at-a-glance information.)

To be omnipotent is to be, basically, all-powerful, which is why many monotheistic religions have it as a characteristic attribute to their deity.

Being very powerful =/= all powerful.

Omnipotence has no limits, unless narrowed to a specific segment of reality (i.e. Discord is omnipotent in matters of chaos/disharmony [see the Anthropomorphic Personification article on TV Tropes for more info on this one]).  Even Celestia and Luna are not omnipotent, for their powers have a limit, and can in turn be overthrown (i.e. Queen Chrysalis in A Canterlot Wedding pt. 2).

Twilight has a lot of power, yes, and a lot of potential for further growth to become one of the most powerful beings in all of Equestria.  However, for her to become omnipotent she would have to achieve power beyond the physical realm, over all the physical realm.  The word "unfathomable" comes to mind.

Anyhay, that's my two bits on the matter.   :D

  12. You got fantastic auto, what mike do you use?  I picked up a snow ball, i mean it speaks clearly but the volume is garbage.

I'm a loud and I know a couple of tricks to play with the volume but i can tell you got your stuff down pat.

I'm using the Audio Technica  2020; I first learned about it when Tommy Oliver said that he used to use this mic in his older videos, and he has always sounded clear.  For $90, it's not bad!

I had to play around with spacing, but as a general rule try to keep the mic on front of you and about one opened hand's width away from your mouth.  A good trick is to make a 'y' hand shape (Google it) and hold that between yourself and the mic, to make sure that you are spaced appropriately.  You may also want to play around with the volume gain levels of the mic; it's not usually a good idea to keep it fully at 100, since that tends to cause audio distortion.

  13. Hey there!  I'm actually doing an analysis series myself (you could see my channel here ), though my own emphasis is more on the characters themselves and their relationships, as well as stuff concerning the Brony community.

As far as ideas go, how about something like the influences of real world culture on culture within Equestria?  I mean, you have the Pegasi, with their influence from Greek history and culture, the unicorns straight out of European folklore, Zecora's African roots, etc.  There certainly seems to be a lot to mine here.

Anyway, from one analyst to another, good luck with your channel!  I've just subbed to you, so I look forward to your videos!

And I have subbed to yours; the few videos of yours that I watched were good, and I'll definitely keep an eye out for more of your stuff!

As for that idea, funny you should bring it up; Malicorn and I were chatting about that a while back.  Of course, he did cover that a bit in his Alicorn Analysis video (well, at least the Ancient Greece influences), however I personally would enjoy delving into the aspects of medieval Europe and tribal Africa present in the other ponies; it could make for some interesting research, to be sure!  I shall add that to the to-do list!

  14. A lot of the Frozen songs have been covered by brony musicians, except for this one (hats off). You might wanna go through the disney song selection and ponify something older (Jungle Book's I Wanna Be Just Like You" could be a great Lyra song about humans for example). Maybe do the Muppet's Rainbow Connection about Rainbow Dash and how all the mane 6 have a connection through the sonic rainboom and getting their cutie marks. Or do a ponified version of a track from a musical like Wicked. After all one of both of the actresses did that musical before they got involved with Frozen.

I was actually thinking of the song "For Good" from Wicked, three guesses as to whom it would be about ;)

  15. I think I have a topic that you could analyze: You could try analyzing the keys involving the mysterious box in Princess Twilight Sparkle, and find a connection or predict on what the items for remaining keys will be.

That topic has been addressed a few times by other analysts, and I am pretty sure that HeartSongPony did a short video summing up *her* thoughts on the matter!  However, I am not beyond delving into the speculation a little more on that one, so I shall add it to the list!  :D  Thanks!

    • Brohoof 1
  16. Greetings everypony!

So I have wanted to start an analysis series for ages, and recently I was able to garner all of the resources necessary to get started!  I went ahead and made a short introductory video for the videos to come:

I will be primarily focusing upon such thing as Equestrian lore, society, industry and culture, as well as aspects of the story and character development within the show.

Now, I need topics!  I already have four or five decent ones which I am working into scripts, however the more long-term I prepare the safer I feel, so if you have something specific that you want me to look into and prepare a video on, please do share!!!

Thanks in advance, and I hope that you will all enjoy my future videos!  ^_^

    • Brohoof 4
  17. It came out really nice!

    Well done you two :)

    also, grats for EQD! :D

Thank you so much!!!  We owe it to everypony who helped us out by submitting it to EqD!

Now to work on our next cover ^_^

So now I have a question for everypony!

What should Izzy and I re-write/cover next?  I have some ideas for other songs from Frozen, however musicals are our speciality, so are there any songs that you guys would love to see pony-ified?
