  1. ?? I've only seen backlash from the last 2.

The others seemed pretty well liked, and the backlash from last two was outweighed by the positives. :D

As far as I have seen on YouTube and here and there on the forums, every episode after the premiere (and even the premiere itself, by some critics and "analysts") have been met with a cruelly generous amount of dislike and skepticism.  I unfortunately can't pull up anything specific at the time being, but I can say that if you go to Brony Curious or DigiBrony's channels, check out their reviews on the afore said episodes, and take a gander in the comments section, you will most likely see what I am talking about.

  2. Rarely do I take seriously the folks who bitch about every conceivable aspect of an episode. I mean, I myself am a habitual nitpicker and overanalyzer of things, but only for fun's sake. There are two types of people in the world - those who focus on the bigger picture, and those who can't see the forest for the trees. And I sure as hell ain't the latter.

Obsessively dwelling on relatively minor details is what causes people to lash out at the shows they love, and I personally find that to be pretty sad...just look at what happened with CR: guy did this beautiful retrospective on the MLP franchise as a whole, but then totally turned sour and proclaimed the show dead after se03. I call douche.

Me, I judge a show/movie/game/book/whatever by the overall experience it delivers (I seem to be one of the few who wasn't at all bothered by se03 or AliTwi, for example), and I'm all the happier for it. Certainly gives me less to bitch about.

I will say, though, I did kind of inwardly groan at the thought of MLP doing a superhero-themed episode, as I'm just really not a fan of the superhero genre altogether (with a few exceptions). But as long as the character interactions remain cleverly written, I'll look past it.

As a (self-proclaimed) analyst I say AMEN to that, sir!  I cannot agree with your post enough!  If I could brohoof your response five hundred times, I would do it five hundred more, just to be the pony who brohoofed one thousand times, then collapsed upon the floor... (sorry, I'm in a weird mood this evening...)

Yeahh, I've got a feeling it's going to receive backlash as well.

Every episode this season has been subject to some pretty intense backlash, I can only wonder how much worse it could possibly get...

  3. Since my OC is essentially the same person as me, I think my own voice would be best (I mean, just listen to this shmexy voice).  Although, if I were to, by some miracle, be featured in an episode of MLP, I would probably want my OC to be voiced by either David Tennant (Scottish accent and all) or Benedict Cumberbatch.

(I realise that neither of these are voice actors, but I don't know many voice actors off the top of my head...)

  4. While Twilight might be my favourite pony, since she is the one who I identify most with, my second favourite is....

    Applejack.

    mlfw1819-hardday.jpg

She is nearly my favourite pony, in fact.  Why?  Because of the Mane 6, I perceive Applejack as being the pony who has the most personal depth.  While she may seem like a fairly shallow character at face value, through her situation and responsibilities she proves to be both inspiring and, if you take the head canon of her parents being dead (as I do), emotional.  She is a pony who has a plethora of responsibility resting on her strong back, and the fact that she carries it all with strength and pride, and at the same time doesn't let it pull her down, is deeply moving and inspiring.  She is responsible to her family and her friends, and sacrifices so much to make them all happy, including her own happiness and well-being with her classic Southern stubbornness (if this wasn't Equestria we're talking about here I would try to make some connection to Scottish heritage).  I find that I have become more emotionally attached to Applejack than I have to any other pony, and more of my tears (both happy and sad) have been shed over her than anypony else in the show.

  5. I am somewhat new to this forum, but I have noticed that things have been a bit, well, lacking, lately, compared to the way things were when I joined back in August...  Personally I thought that it was just me getting too overcome by school to pay as much attention to the situation around here, but now that things are calming down on the school front, I can see that it is a bit beyond that.  The blog post by Dsanders recently really did set off the caution lights in my head as well as the general attitude of some of the threads that have been made recently (some negative and "anti-season 4" threads spring to mind in particular...)

    But I digress.

    I say to you, sirrah....

    Challenge accepted.

    Let's do this!

  6. (Yeah, I already made a thread for this, but two things happened.  1) I realised I would be cluttering up the forum if I posted a new topic for each chapter and 2) the forum completely messed up my formatting, so consider this a refresh!)

Here is a crossover fan fiction series that I decided to start earlier in the semester as something to keep me occupied in my spare time (or to distract me from school...).  I hope that you all enjoy!

A Series of Right Rotten Events

    To my dearest Reader,

I regret to inform you that the work of fan fiction which you are about to read is exceedingly troublesome, for it recounts the unfortunate lives of the three Apple youngsters:  Macintosh, Applejack, and Apple Bloom.  Though they are charming and kind, these poor ponies’ lives are filled with misery and misfortune.  From the very first paragraph of this upsetting account of events the cruelty of their lives is realised, and my horn, even now, is loathe to hold the quill.

In this woeful series, the three Apple siblings will encounter an egotistical and prejudiced relative, uncomfortable accommodations, an abused unicorn, a terrible plot, and horrible news that will change their lives forever.

I have taken it upon myself to document these miserable happenings, but you have the freedom to keep on scrolling and pass this piece of fan fiction by.  I am sure that not far from this location on the webpage is some other, happier story about playful and colourful ponies frolicking under a rainbow, enjoying the bliss of a life without sorrow.

However, if the sad lives of these three youngsters has grabbed your attention, then read on; but don’t say that I did not warn you.

    With appropriate resolve,

    Silver Quill

    1. Chapter the First: A Dreadful Dawn

    2. Chapter the Second: Intrusive Introductions

I am trying to finish at least one chapter a month, however with other projects taking up my time and attention I can make no guarantees in my consistency!  However, I hope that you all enjoy it, all the same! :)

  7. Well, considering that I am still in the boat that thinks that the entire thing will be a figment of Spike's imagination, a dream, or a hallucination of some sort, if anything it will parody to the comic book super hero genre, and as a result should not be taken seriously in the first place.

I am not too worried about the general reaction to this episode, but rather I am worried about the direction, on the story level, in which they mean to take it (and I'm even pretty lax about that).  Because, honestly, there will be nit-pickers either way.

  8. Might you do my oc Nightstrike. His backstory now is kinda grimdark. But after he wakes up on the edge of the everfree, you can make it whatever you want! :squee:

I can give it a go, definitely!  It appears to be very Wolverine-esque!

Would you mind especially if I altered some details?

  9. Oh, does this mean that I can bombard you with grimda-

    Aww... :(

I will have to think about something then. Hmmm...

Yea , I think that there is already more than enough of that stuff floating around as it is :P

Not to mention it would hardly be helpful in writing within the bounds of the show, now would it? XD

  10. Greetings all!

Looking over my recent projects and endeavours I have come to realise that I am not satisfied with my current abilities in portraying characters in Equestria, and my representation of that world, as well, is somewhat lacking.  To meet this obvious need, I have created this thread, where anyone who has a story idea can post it here, and I shall try to do it justice in the form of a six to eight page long short story!

The only regulations I would like to lay down as far as what you can ask me to write are:

    • It has to be an idea that can be written in a short story (as I said before, think within the realm of six to eight pages).
    • It cannot be a romance/shipping fiction.
    • It cannot be a grimdark/gore fiction.
    • The closer it is to the 'slice-of-life' or source material of the show, the better, since the purpose here is to practice writing within the world of Equestria and properly write characters accordingly.
    • I will take artistic liberties, so try to be as descriptive with your idea as possible so that I know what my boundaries are.

Of course, these will be primarily for posterity and for me developing my skill and ability as a fan fiction writer for MLP:FiM.  However, I will all the same try my hardest to do your ideas justice!

If you want to see an example of my previous writing, here is my FimFiction profile.

I look forward to hearing your ideas!

  11. I am probably best befitting to the classification of neutral good, although I confess that I have never been one for rules, laws, or really guidelines in general... so does that make me chaotic good, then?  I don't doubt my positive spirit, though, so I can at the very least affirm my "good-ness", within the context ;)

  12. Dude, this is beautiful! Honestly, you deserve more praise here. :D I loved the melody and it really matched perfected with the overall atmosphere you were trying to present here.

Keep practicing and I'm sure you'll only be getting better with your music. ;)

Keep up the good work my friend. As a huge fan of instrumental music, I fully approve of this! ^_^

    Thank you <3

If for nothing else, for your acknowledgement of this thread!  ^_^

  13. I will gladly record a video of me for you!  It shall have to be tomorrow, though, since I am at the moment busy with studying for finals :P

I would love to help with production as well, however my skills only go as far as writing.  That and I am already working on another project.  Actually, would you want to interview my producer, and get the viewpoint of someone working on fan-made media?

  14. Probably a unicorn, however I do not approve of your negligence toward earth ponies.  Their affinity for the earth should not be under played, and after unicorn they are my favourite race in Equestria (being an individual who considers himself close to nature.)

And you gotta admit, having the ability to encourage the growth of life is a pretty wicked awesome skill, albeit somewhat slower than flight or magic :P  But all the same!

  15. I have a lot to say on the episode as a whole, but find myself in a position where I lack the time to have them all voiced fully.  Maybe if I ever get around to that YouTube analysis series I shall, but ah well.

In a nutshell I believe that this episode, like the episode before it, was good (this one more so than the last), however it's ultimate defect was that they did not have sufficient time to explore the conflicts that had been introduced.  We could have seen a lot more in-depth with Scootaloo, just as we could have come to understand Daring Do a bit better in Daring Don't.  However they had to cram everything into 22 minutes, and as such some things were lost "in translation," as it were.  Thinking as a writer, and a screen writer no less, there are a lot of variables to consider when a story does not seem to be delivering in such a way that it, as it seems, should.  However, in general I don't go into an episode of MLP bearing the burden of expectations, and as a result I am never truly disappointed, but instead left with a sense of minor disappointment by the lack of some things which I would have liked to see in the episode.

Well that's my two bits at any rate.
