  1. I'm back from the dead to bring you this announcement:

Thank you so much for doing this! It means a lot! I'm back now though and I'm so happy!

  2. I'm in a hotel room right now, so the bed is on the wall away from the window. There isn't much of a choice here, because the air conditioner needs to be by the window anyway.
  3. Well, this is pretty accurate.

How did you get this picture of me?

  4. This time last year, I had graduated and spent almost 6 months unemployed and looking for a job. I got very few interviews, no job offers, and was seriously starting to lose my mind from it all. I had just started running every morning to try to get in shape--I was considering joining the military so that I could have some job to support myself. I didn't really want to do it, but it seemed like the only option I had, and I was getting so sick of being turned down by every company I applied to.

One day last summer, I was going to talk to a Navy recruiter to become a nuclear propulsion officer. I went to the recruiter's office to take some kind of aptitude/knowledge/qualification test, and as a complete surprise to me, it turned out that I got the highest score the recruiter had ever seen. I think part of that was because the test asked a lot of engineering related questions, so my education and background helped. But additionally, I had put a lot of effort into my studies, and that was really the first chance I had to show it. That meant I could have chosen pretty much any job within the military, and I would have been accepted.

The result I got on that test made me think it wasn't so hopeless. In a way, it reminded me that I shouldn't sell myself short even though things hadn't been going well. Everything kind of started to change that day. I had been accepted into graduate school, so I decided I would take the risk and avoid joining the military in favor of continuing my studies. I lost out on a full time job with good benefits, but I thought it might be worth it.

Later on last summer, I got to meet my girlfriend in person for the first time. Ironically, at that same time that was happening, a professor offered me a job as a research assistant if he could secure funding for a project.

I'm halfway through my masters degree now. I started working for that professor, so my work funds my classes and living expenses. He's complimented me several times. He likes that I show up on time, I'm always interested, and I've very focused on my work (not all of this can be said about the other students he advises). I've made very good grades since starting graduate school, and this week I'm leaving for a summer internship. I almost didn't think it was possible, but yes, I finally managed to get one of those.

In addition to preparing for that, I'm also planning a third vacation with my girlfriend this summer, and also working on the paperwork to begin my thesis in the fall. Life has been busy as crap with classes and research, but a year ago, I almost couldn't have predicted things would turn out as okay as this.

Looking back now, I guess everything turned out as it should have. I just didn't know it at the time.

Great to hear that everything's starting to work out well for you!

  5. Man, I feel like horsecrap today. Skipped work, except to make a trip to the machine lab to pick up some parts. Skipped classes too. Hardly slept at all last night, and am super tired today. I got some aloe to put on my sunburn, but even with that it still burns like hell. Now it's just more like my face, neck, ears and arms are in an oven rather than drenched in napalm.

      I guess that's better?

  6. Today was... possibly the worst day of work I've had so far.
Had to miss two classes to help some other students do field testing of a robot. Missed breakfast this morning, couldn't have lunch, and didn't get to go home until much later than I expected. In total I spent nearly eight hours outside today... and instead of getting some of my owm work done, I managed to get what is probably one of the worst sunburns I've ever had. My feet are killing me from standing all day, instead of being nice and comfy in the lab.

I'm home now, but I'm dehydrated, exhausted, and it hurts to move. Oh, and I still haven't had the chance to go to the post office this week... damn it.

At least it's almost Friday right?

  7. I hate it when the post office requires you to sign to receive a delivery. It's so stupid.

I was supposed to get a very important document returned to me in the mail today, but that didn't happen. The mail carrier apparently left a notice because... "sorry we missed you!"

My ass. I've been home all day, and I never heard the doorbell ring. But I now have to go to the postal distribution center during inconvenient hours to pick this document up, when it could have just been left in the mailbox like... you know, all the other important mail that goes around.

Hmm..sounds like my mail department here...or they deliver it to someone across town:lostit:

  8. How to classify any mathematical expression:

I was inspired to make this quick guide after my troubles in the past few days.

  9. It is amazing how unproductive a day at work can be sometimes. Finish printing parts? No, the printer broke. Solve partial differential equations in an analytic form? lol... I'm sure a solution exists, but I've been at it for 15-20 hours now and haven't found it.

Another long day, another day of accomplishing nothing. Welp, I should get some sleep. Going to have to do it all over again tomorrow.

      Good luck tomorrow!

  10. Well... yeah. Sounds like high school, for sure.
  11. I graduated in December of 2017, and spent most of 2018 looking for work. I was able to find a part time job tutoring, but it didn't go well, and for the most part, things weren't looking good. I knew I needed to rethink my life, so I decided I would go back to school for a master's degree.

I didn't have funding for my first semester, and I questioned if it was a wise decision. Now, I can say that it was. I've been offered a full time job as a research assistant just this week. This upcoming Monday will be my first day of real, actual work--and for the first time ever, I will have complete financial independence. My tuition and fees will be paid for, I will be doing real engineering work, and I will have my own health insurance coverage, among other things.

It's difficult for me to express just how grateful I am that this is happening, and it's very odd to think that everything managed to fall into place after all. I'm not just relieved; I'm completely blown away by how awesome it is.

      That sounds amazing, congratulations!

  12. In the past 10 days, I have done literally nothing but sleep, eat, and work on end-of-semester assignments for school. Even that is kind of a generous statement to make--I ate nothing but microwavable trash food, and even my dreams were filled with thoughts of conformal maps and partial differential equations.

Once I finished my last final exam yesterday afternoon, I went home and slept for a little more than 12 hours. It's over now. No more classes again until January. Today I'm cleaning up and eating some not-so-trashy food. It feels good. I feel free. I don't know what else I'll do today, but I suppose that's the beauty of it.

At least it's done until next semester. :)

  13. That's quite a username you have there. And happy birthday too!

  14. As a Florida resident: Why do Virginia and the Carolinas get to have all the fun? Hurricanes are supposed to be ours; come on, send us some too! We're waiting!
  15. What. Why are all images black and white right now? Has the web server gone back in time to before color was invented?

Its been like this since yesterday. I like it, but now the artist I commissioned can't see my reference pictures very well. I thought it was amazing timing.

  16. That moment when you plot one of your homework equation systems into Matlab, and it looks like ET's face... lol.

  17. This is the best answer. It's not in Discord's interest to solve everyone's problems.
  18. Woke up from an awful dream this morning.

It's weird. Sometimes prior events seem like a fluke or a one-time thing as they're occuring. And it's easy to downplay it in the moment, or forget about it when it doesn't happen again. But if I take a wider point of view, I see that there are patterns in memories after all. That one little thing is rarely just one little thing. It was so long ago now that it probably doesn't matter, but what happened then was more concerning than I thought. Odd, it took me a dream to realize that.

Meh. Well, time to get ready for the day.

  19. It's a bit late in the day for me, and not much has happened so far. Perhaps tomorrow will be more interesting.
