  1. I graduated in December of 2017, and spent most of 2018 looking for work. I was able to find a part time job tutoring, but it didn't go well, and for the most part, things weren't looking good. I knew I needed to rethink my life, so I decided I would go back to school for a master's degree.

I didn't have funding for my first semester, and I questioned if it was a wise decision. Now, I can say that it was. I've been offered a full time job as a research assistant just this week. This upcoming Monday will be my first day of real, actual work--and for the first time ever, I will have complete financial independence. My tuition and fees will be paid for, I will be doing real engineering work, and I will have my own health insurance coverage, among other things.

It's difficult for me to express just how grateful I am that this is happening, and it's very odd to think that everything managed to fall into place after all. I'm not just relieved; I'm completely blown away by how awesome it is.

      That sounds amazing, congratulations!

  2. In the past 10 days, I have done literally nothing but sleep, eat, and work on end-of-semester assignments for school. Even that is kind of a generous statement to make--I ate nothing but microwavable trash food, and even my dreams were filled with thoughts of conformal maps and partial differential equations.

Once I finished my last final exam yesterday afternoon, I went home and slept for a little more than 12 hours. It's over now. No more classes again until January. Today I'm cleaning up and eating some not-so-trashy food. It feels good. I feel free. I don't know what else I'll do today, but I suppose that's the beauty of it.

At least it's done until next semester. :)

  3. That's quite a username you have there. And happy birthday too!

  4. I've decided I would much rather have a Phanteks case. Specifically, this one:

It seems to pack a bunch of features for a fair price and has everything I need.

Unfortunately, it seems that I won't be able to get my dream computer built anytime soon due to an unexpected financial situation.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on the RTX 2080? Yay, or nay?

I've never worked with a Phanteks case before, but they look pretty nice. That one looks like it would be a solid choice for most builds.

With the RTX cards, I'm a bit torn on the whole ray tracing thing. On one hand, I see it as a complete gimmick that should be avoided by any value-seeking consumer. On the other hand, I understand what ray tracing is and I know it's the future of rendering 3D graphics. Needless to say, I'm actually quite impressed by what Nvidia has done, and their AI denoising algorithm is very, very clever to say the least. It's the future of gaming for sure, it's just that the future is still kinda far away, and the technology is still in its infancy.

Overall, I have a bit of distaste for the state of the GPU market right now. The GTX 1000 series was awesome, but I hated how expensive it was without any competition from AMD. The GTX 2000 series takes that a step further. The performance isn't breathtaking, but it is a solid step up from the 1000 series--with, of course, a solid step up in price.

It's totally off the radar for me, as I'm happy enough with my GTX 1060 and can't afford to upgrade anyway. But for those who have money they're willing to burn, I wouldn't fault them for opting for a 2080 over a 1080 ti. There are architectural advancements made with Turing, and although it doesn't result in increased FPS at 1080p, it's clearly the card to have for upcoming AAA games and/or higher resolutions.

This is especially true when we can count on GameWorks to ensure new games run like crap on the previous generation's cards. They've done it in the past, and you know it's going to happen again. That's why I dislike Nvidia.

Nvidia: great technology, horrible ethics. That's my view in a nutshell.

As a Florida resident: Why do Virginia and the Carolinas get to have all the fun? Hurricanes are supposed to be ours; come on, send us some too! We're waiting!
  6. What. Why are all images black and white right now? Has the web server gone back in time to before color was invented?

Its been like this since yesterday. I like it, but now the artist I commissioned can't see my reference pictures very well. I thought it was amazing timing.

      It's an noire theme.

I feel like I need more coffee.
  8. That moment when you plot one of your homework equation systems into Matlab, and it looks like ET's face... lol.

  9. This is the best answer. It's not in Discord's interest to solve everyone's problems.
  10. Woke up from an awful dream this morning.

It's weird. Sometimes prior events seem like a fluke or a one-time thing as they're occuring. And it's easy to downplay it in the moment, or forget about it when it doesn't happen again. But if I take a wider point of view, I see that there are patterns in memories after all. That one little thing is rarely just one little thing. It was so long ago now that it probably doesn't matter, but what happened then was more concerning than I thought. Odd, it took me a dream to realize that.

Meh. Well, time to get ready for the day.
