  1. @@EquestrianScholar,  @,

"Oh! Right, right! Of course, yes, the exam..." he replied excitedly, still organizing his things and clearly apprehensive about actually beginning, perhaps even stalling. "Well, you see, the needles and syringes are of course, for blood collection. Rest assured, as stated previously, I don't intend on taking much."

Inkwell finished his organizing, and moved over to the various types of scissors. They ranged from tiny surgical scissors to the larger trauma sheers. Besides them were files for hooves and such.

"And, I wasn't entirely certain what to bring for your mane." Inkwell paused and looked over Celestia's flowing mane and tail, then looked to Luna's. He tilted and scratched his head a little, trying to think of what exactly he was supposed to use to contain that. Was it a gas? Some kind of fluid? Perhaps a plasma of sorts... or just regular hair that merely looked ethereal.

"At any rate, I've brought various containers for the purpose of collecting samples from your coat and mane seperately. I was merely uncertain what type of container I needed." He concluded. "The file is for your hooves of course."

He had wanted to get some of their horns as well, but he wasn't going to press for that. "The measuring tape is, of course, for simple measurements of anatomy. As I'm sure you are obviously aware, you are a bit taller and bigger than most other ponies. I think we need to quantify that particular observation."

"Lastly, the pen and paper are for general observation and notes for the questionnaire portion of the exam." He concluded. There were some other things he left in his bag, but didn't really plan to take them out unless the two Princesses became comfortable with him.

"Oh yes! And for saliva too, I always forget about the oral exam. So let's see... we may begin with specimen collection, coat, mane, saliva, hooves, and of course blood... then we may move onto measurements and general quantification... then to the physical exam for eyes, ears, nose, throat, lungs, that sort of thing... and finally our general questionnaire, that will be the longest part I'm afraid."

There were a few other things he wanted to do though, but he doubted he would get anything other than that from the two princesses. Nothing too invasive, maybe they would feel comfortable with the exam and allow for a second one later on. Inkwell kept having to tell himself not to push things to much.

  2. @@EquestrianScholar@,

Inkwell remained quiet, and tried to follow without looking at either of the princesses. It certainly wasn't his intention to open up old wounds, he felt a little bad at doing so to be sure. As a result, he tried to keep his own presence at a minimum so as not to interrupt or disturb them further. Still, their exchange was something to note for later... certainly some telling emotional responses by the both of them.

"Why thank you," He replied to Luna as they reached the study, and in his usual awkward fashion, entered before the two alicorns. "Now, if you would kindly find a place to relax, I shall prepare my things so we may begin."

Inkwell looked around for a table or something to place his equipment on. Everything in his saddlebags that was; along with a few notebooks and pens, he pulled out scissors, needles, specimen containers, a measuring tape, and a few clear glass beakers with cork tops.

He cleared his throat, still a little nervous, as he organized things on whatever table he found. "Well, uhm... before we begin, might either of you have any additional questions you wish to ask of me?"

  3. I see what you mean. She wouldn't have a spiteful reason for letting it all happen. So essentialy, it was an effort to prove that the two were completely different. Perhaps it was she herself that coined the name Nightmare Moon, in an effort to distance the evil from Luna herself? If she hadn't, then others would have always referred to the evil version as princess Luna still thinking it was the same. I think your idea has more calculated meaning in it, rather than my dismissive one, if you know what I mean.

  4. of course. The counter argument I expected was simple, no need for anything private. She was essentially two different personalities if I'm not mistaken. Besides, I doubt even Celestia  herself could control rumors and hearsay, know what I mean? Inhabitants back then only saw an Alicorn that looked a little sinister with fangs wrecking up the place for a brief moment, they just fill in the blanks themselves.

Sorry if that places to much on her, I can redact that last bit if you like.

  5. Something about Luna's statement made Inkwell pause for a second in thought. It was a fairly thoughtful response quite honestly, for her to realize her fears were in fact, fears, was telling of her personality. An interesting thing to ponder, then again, they were at least a thousand years old... perhaps they had time to learn of themselves, so to speak.

Inkwell gave a quick bow to the two of them and turned to follow them both to their private study. He honestly wasn't certain himself which room he would prefer, but at least the study would be guarantee privacy.

That's when he hard Luna's request. Inkwell had all but forgotten in the excitement of the moment, his nervousness, and Luna's own phobias of medicine.

"Oh uh... your question, yes..." he began a bit nervously. "I've contemplated your question, and I believe I have a most reasonable explanation."

He gulped, before beginning. "Well, It's a very simple explanation of why other's fear you. For a thousand years, you were described as a beast of nightmares, capable of haunting dreams in one world, and eating colts and fillies in the real one. Whether it is true or not, is irrelevant. The average lifespan of an average pony is but a mere fraction of the time you had been... indisposed..." he used the last word a bit cautiously. "Since our birth we came to see you as a murderous terror beast from the moon around to devour innocent ponies. Perhaps 30 generations of ponies fostered this idea, so who is one to believe, that which your parents, and their parents have always told you, or what some random town crier or newspaper announces one sunny evening?"

Inkwell paused in thought, recalling he had one particular question of his own that could more appropriately answer such a question. He had concluded it wasn't pertinent enough to include in his formal questionnaire, but perhaps it could help answer Luna's question.

"Perhaps the appropriate question in this instant isn't why, but rather, who." He concluded, glancing over to Princess Celestia for just a moment. He tried to avoid looking directly at her.

He had tried to research the topic of who perpetrated such a notion in the first place, and how it began initially, but he was met with a great many obstacles. Most written accounts concluded that all of this was fact, that she was an evil murdering creature. None actually stated who came to that conclusion in the first place thought. Inkwell surmised it would only take a single witness, but in a thousand years, why had Celestia not even tried to correct the myths? Unless of course... they were true.

  6. @, @@EquestrianScholar,

Inkwell dawned a wide grin when Luna finally came to her senses. It was quite a relief, he also let out a little bit of breath he had been holding for fear of all this being canceled. This was his one opportunity to study Alicorns, and he had almost lost it completely for no other reason than a silly misunderstanding.

He gave a bow to Luna as she apologized. "Please your highness, I should be the one apologizing. I assure you once again, it will be a most pleasant and relaxing evening in spite of the exam."

Inkwell turned around to lead where he believed the hospital wing was.

For some reason, his nerves were beginning to calm. Inkwell expected just the opposite to occur, but maybe seeing them so vulnerable had eased his fears that they were something else entirely. Only time and the exam would help confirm or deny such a thought.

  7. @, @@EquestrianScholar,

Inkwell was taken aback by Luna's response, and blushed at Celestia's own explanation of why exactly it probably wasn't a good idea to show her the needle. He would could never understand why some ponies were afraid of methods of medical research.

"No, please, you misunderstand!" Inkwell replied to Luna to reassure her. "I've brought some smelling salts in the event you become unconscious as a result of anything we do this evening. Please your highness, you have nothing to fear from me!"

It was all a vein attempt though, as she asked for privacy with her sister. "Yes, yes of course, as you please your highness."

Inkwell took a few steps back with a nervous and disheartened look on his face. That was so foolish of him to show her anything at all, he should have recognized the fact she was nervous about medical science. He thought her fears were just about old practices though, and that was reasonable, but what could she possibly be afraid of now? Maybe explaining it better would help.

"Your majesty, I'm terribly sorry," Inkwell stated, standing a short distance down the hall to give the two some privacy, he had to speak a bit louder to be heard. "If it alleviates your fears, I didn't intend to take more than a tenth of your blood, well, less than a tenth for you compared to the average pony that is. I imagine for you it would be even less of such an estimate given your size! Why, I imagine you have at least fifty liters of blood, more than double the average pony, I would have to take at least fifteen to cause adverse side effects!"

Inkwell chuckled like it was a little joke. He certainly didn't have that much space to spare for blood, though he certainly wouldn't say no to such a quantity, he didn't exactly want to cause any injury to the princesses.

"Well, I suppose you might become slightly light headed if you aren't well hydrated or hadn't eaten anything this evening... but that's a simple fix!" He added with a smile, confident the explanation would be sufficient to alleviate her fears.

  8. @@EquestrianScholar, @,

"Oh well, don't think of it as being 'secretive' your highness," Inkwell responded to Celestia's comment. "we're merely preserving privacy!"

Obviously secrecy was important to him in this case too, but it was for privacy for them just as much. Afterall, there might be certain things they might not want others to be privy too. Not that he minded keeping a few secrets, at least he knew them. Perhaps he could even capitalize on them indirectly as well. All thoughts for after the exams though.

He was taken back by Luna's comment though. "Leeches!? Heavens no! That's such a barbaric practice, contemporary medical science has moved far past such medieval method."

Inkwell gave a silent chuckle. "Very few uneducated physicians use leaches, but not I. It's dirty, disgusting, and I imagine its an exceptionally uncomfortable method."

"No, we use more modern methods. We use needles." Inkwell said as he flipped open one of his saddle bags to produce a large needle. Its sharpened end was so large one could see its slant and the opening itself.

  9. Inkwell blushed when Princess Celestia told him once again to calm down. "My apologies your highness..."

When she mentioned the medical wing, Inkwell started to agree. While he was certain he had brought everything he needed for this endeavor, being in a clean, mostly sterile room, would be the most comfortable setting for him. Before he could agree, however, The Princess of the Night suggested otherwise.

She still sounded a bit off, nervous as Celestia had suggested. It was then that he remembered the question she had asked upon their first meeting. Of course he had prepared for it, but he was starting to regret agreeing to answering it, especially with her demeanor. How would she react? Well, he had prepared two answers to test out, but he was going to have to choose one eventually.

"Oh... well, I suppose a private room would be suffice. I believe I've brought all the necessary materials for the exam as it is, I shouldn't need any extra equipment from your infirmary." He replied, giving a polite gesture for Celestia to lead the way, hopefully that was an appropriate response, not that he knew where to go anyways.

  10. @@EquestrianScholar, @

Inkwell was taken aback by Celestias apology. A formality, most likely, trying to be kind and understanding. Perhaps he should expect such things from her. Still, he didn't want to be rude or anything.

"Oh, uhm... no need to apologize your highness. My little encounter isn't all that important anyways, and accidents do happen I suppose." He replied, in reference to her and the kitchen.

He wasn't quite sure what to say in response to them looking forward to the meething though. "Oh, well, I've been looking forward to this exam as well."

He gulped silently at Luna's response though. It sounded a bit more formal, and there was a feeling that perhaps it was something she felt obligated to say. The cake thing, however, seemed to improve her demeanor, even giving her a smile. It didn't help... her exam was going to be the least pleasant, and certainly a nerve wracking experience for Inkwell. Her nervous though? That would just make it even more difficult. Inkwell concluded any such reserves she had would force him to tread even lighter.

"I assure you, you have nothing to worry about your highness. I will of course try not to do anything that scrapes your nerves in such a way." he replied.

Well... there were some things she might not like. It was a particularly new thing in the field of medical research, but he did want to see if he could acquire blood samples from both of them. That was something he would need to warm them up to first, he imagined pure Alicorn blood would be worth billions on the market to the less savory elements of Equestria, but his intent was to sell anything he gained from today.

"Oh well, is there any place in particular either of you would like to do this in? Where ever is more comfortable for you of course." He said, both eager and nervous to begin things.

  11. @, @@EquestrianScholar,

Inkwell jumped just a little when he was addressed from behind from one of the Princesses, Princess Celestia to be exact. She had a particularly kind and motherly voice, but he was already a bit jumpy to begin with.

"Oh! Uhm, your highness!" He said as he turned and gave a rehearsed bow. "Actually I-"

Before he could answer the princess, a particularly dark shadow overtook him. A shiver ran down his spine as he recognized it as the very same shadow of Nightmare Moon he recalled when he was a foal as his parents played shadow puppets. The voice attached to it, while lighter overall, had just a bit of venom he expected from the Princess of the Night. That is, until she mentioned sweets. Fairly unexpected change of topic from being late.

Inkwell slowly and carefully turned to face the Princess of the Night, shaking just a little and head held low. He gave a low and exaggerated bow for Princess Luna.

"Ye- yes, your grace! I do apologize, I had actually arrived quite a bit of go... but I had difficulty navigating the palace. I do hope you forgive me." He replied, still in his bow.

That was another thing he wasn't quite sure on, who had a higher standing than the other, or if it even worked that way. Since one was already there, was it necessary or wise to bow for the other? He had settled with doing so with both, hopefully the two princesses didn't take offense to that decision.

  12. @@@EquestrianScholar,

Inkwell couldn't help but notice how elegant the halls of the palace were. Of course they were, it was a palace... but upon his last visit, he had been to nervous to actually pay any attention to it all. The stained glass windows were particularly interesting, depicting quite the story of major events in Equestria's history.

One particular row he noticed depicted the story of Night Mare Moon... something he didn't particularly want to be reminded of. Luckily, he wouldn't be in the room alone with Luna. Celestia would be there, just in case of course.

As he breathed a sigh of relief and turned his attention back to where he was going, he noticed a door on the side of the hall open up. Stepping out, was non-other than Nigh... Princess Luna... herself.

Inkwell went rigid at the sight of the Alicorn, looking around to see if anyone else was present, which they weren't. Hopefully she didn't see him, and turned the other way without noticing. In his head, he continued to tell himself that she wasn't Nightmare Moon, but he just couldn't shake the scary stories he had been repeatedly told since birth.

    @@EquestrianScholar, @,

Inkwell wasn't as nervous as he thought he would be. In fact, he was downright calm as he walked through Canterlot Palace's halls. The esteemed Dr. had been preparing for this particular meeting since the moment they had agreed to it.

Not only did Inkwell have a fair bit of extra equipment in his grey saddlebags, he had also prepared a comprehensive list of questions. Of course, he had also considered and composed an answer to Princes Luna's question she had posed to him...

The Dr. Walked down the halls trying to find exactly where he was supposed to speak with them. He tried to look nice today, wearing a dark blue coat with bronze trim, and a similarly colored wide brimmed hat with a feather on the side. His grey colored coat was cleaned and shiny, and his main was actually trimmed well for once.

Not sure where or what to do, he looked about nervously and uncertainly.

    • Brohoof 1
  14. Inkwell gave yet another respectful bow, each to the princesses individually. "Thank you so very much, you won't regret your decision!" He assured, then began walking out of the hall, turning around and bowing several times again before he finally made it to the door.

To think, he would be the first one to study Alicorns and their physiology. How remarkable! What amazing things awaited for him to discover, now he just had to wait for Thursday...

  15. @@EquestrianScholar, @@Skycoaster,

“Dr. Inkwell, Flint Inkwell, at your service your highness.” He said, bowing to Princess Luna. Inkwell merely concluded she was just a bit tired, considering it was basically her midnight right now. He was a bit apprehensive to reply to her deal though.

“Uh… err… well, perhaps, I mean…” Why ponies still feared her? That was a loaded question… “Uhm… perhaps we could discuss this at our next meeting? You seem tired, I wouldn’t want to keep you up any more.” He stated.

Inkwell turned back to Celestia. “Of course, that sounds perfect. Thursday, I will look forward to it.” He said, giving yet another bow to both of them.

He didn’t want to overstay his welcome, especially with two princesses in the same room. He still felt a bit nervous and more than a little awkward being the only commoner in the entire hall.
