  1. oh man, gentoo, the only thing more hardcore is Linux From Scratch: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

I never went gentoo because i thought it be a little too much work, it takes a very long

time to compile all of that software, i heard they now have some pre-compiled binaries for

some software, but honestly it seems like it would take a very long time, not worth it that much for me,

i like arch for a similar level of customization but without the hours of compiling source code...

Maybe ill try gentoo one day, maybe even LFS, but for now, arch is perfect for my customization

    needs.

    Challenge accepted.

But yeah, Arch is good. The arch wiki is amazing.

  2. I really like Arch. One thing about it is you want to be careful with you root partition. It can fill up quickly if you're not careful. If you want to go really hardcore, install Gentoo Linux using the minimum CD.

I tried to install gentoo once...

I never got to compile the kernel for some reason...it gave me an error. But I did download some stuff off a gentoo repo with the text based web browser that was included...it was amazing, it was command line...but it...it had a GUI....somehow oO. There is a name for that type of GUI...I just forgot it.

  3. If your on a Mac, it's ok to not really switch to linux. OSX and Linux are cousins in a way (both are based on UNIX)

Not quite, Linux isn't based on the unix kernel, well...not really, it was made to sorta be a clone of it and very similar but not the real deal, like OSX is. Also, Linux is Open source while unix isn't. As bbb said unless you are referring to the kernel the correct term is GNU/Linux which stands for Gnus not unix or something.

  4. Ubuntu users tend to be average users, While Fedora Users tend to be more professional.

I use Fedora on my laptop, its great! Ubuntu is recommended a lot and is the 'average' user distro because it is really a starting point for GNU/linux. Its large userbase and simplicity make it really easy to use and fix errors. It also comes with virtually everything you'd need and everything else you'd need is in the software center, I know of many people who have used ubuntu and have never touched the terminal because they've never needed too.

  5. That and I have a hefty Steam Library which I can't pull away from.

Steam is coming to linux soon (Valve time)... with better drivers to maintain similar frame rates as to what windows would.

However if it is going to be anything like when steam was ported to OSX only certain games got ported over.

  6. So general Linux/OS thread, I can't offer much that vet Linux users won't know so just share any cool things you know and let's see if we can get anybody to see the light that is Linux.

I'd Just Like To Interject For A Moment, What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Now I got that out of my system....

Any thoughts on Ubuntu vs. Mint?

Mint is based on Ubuntu, Ubuntu is based on Debian.

the main difference with mint and ubuntu is that mint doesn't use unity, which is what ubuntu uses and it is really a matter of choice with something like that. I hate unity so I prefer Mint to ubuntu (mint uses Gnome 3...I think...), but they are really very similar OS's and if the GUI is the only thing stopping you from using on or the other it doesn't take much to install a different one. For a first time user I'd recommend mint, because it comes with the goodies of ubuntu (the software center, and the large user base, if you screw something up google can easily help you)

Also, mint comes with proprietary(closed source) software on it...I think... and ubuntu might as well...I'm not quite sure but...I--I might need to check up on that.

That said, I'd honestly never recommend Ubuntu, unless it's an older version. So I'm subject to being quite bias.

  7. Is your name a reference to doctor who? 'cause there is someone called river song, and her name was translated from melody pond. Some alien language translation issue 'cause they didn't have the right words.

    Welcome to the forums!

  8. Expect this kind of stuff from the fandom. I guess if you want to, maybe you should read more of that type so you become desensitized to it and it doesn't shock you when you read it again.

  9. Awesome, I'll try to use the search more. More than before atleast as before it seemed sorta slow and by the sounds of it this new search is much better. Hopefully this will also help get rid of duplicate threads when someone hasn't searched properly.

  10. Does this work?

    Whoa man.... that eye...

The guy should have got the while eye layer and made it mask all the other eye layers....

Thats what I do when I vector to make the eyes look pretty.

  11. ARE YOU RELATED TO CAPS LOCK PONY?

    ARE YOU MY MUMMY?

    Why does your profile picture look at me so ;~;

RAWR! I mean he looks at you like that because he read this thread.

**just realized it's the old Flare**

    what in the hay.....

Try and think out side of the hay. Its good for your brain, helps it expand!

Whats your favorite show? Other than MLP: FIM

    Doctor who...I guess
  12. In that case, would you like to swim with me?

    I might be able too...

In all seriousness though, I hate swimming and have difficulty believing people actually enjoy swimming for fun. I have a pool in my backyard, its cold 90% of the time and not fit for swimming and it is a pain to maintain the pool water is green half the time no matter how many chemicals you put in or how many times you replace the pumps and filters.

I'm also a slow swimmer and manage to chock on water when I try to swim really fast. Maybe if the pool was heated or something I would join you. At this moment I'd honestly full wholeheartedly have to say Nope. If you could meet my requirements it would be a good chance to go for a swim to get the proper and full experience of a swim.

  13. Um...

    Why the name?

I didn't like my old name, this new one is better...In my opinion.

I might switch back to flare or something else if I like it.

I still continue to use the Flare signature that I made because it helps to identify who I 'was'

Would you like to die in a fire?

    Posted Image

Isn't that a little rude? I'd prefer to not die in a fire. Either way thank you for asking ^_^

Seeing as I am technically a Flare I doubt fire would hurt me the slightest... on the other hand of the spectrum water would be quite a punishment for me.

  14. Ask me anything!

Anything as long as it keep within the forum rules off course.

I'm not roleplaying or anything this is me, my legit full name.

I declare this thread now open!

    I used to be cool.

  15. Although the forum here isn't dedicated to the news I guess they would be some form of finding out the news. I tend to dislike reading the news anywhere unless I go out and search for it. Most likely what is going around in the news isn't interesting for me.

I can't think of any news sites off the top of my head however I can find some good news sites that are dedicated o a few topics (like umm... technology or games) I guess if you want all round news of everything maybe you should try out google news? I've never directly used it though, but I have found results with it from just general searches and they seemed good, but yeah I've never used it so.....
