  1. Well, they each knew the fillies well enough to guess what they would typically want... It was kinda cool that the CMC were branching out a bit, which fits the theme of the recent CMC episode. I guess there is also a lesson in listening without assuming, because even some of the people you know the best might have some new ideas.
  2. It's a shame that the adults needed someone to yell at them. The fillies WERE making their desires known, but the adults weren't listening. As a kid, you shouldn't need to yell, but honestly, it might have helped.
  3. wow! here I was spending the WHOLE episode waiting for them to switch who they were building carts with, but the punch was WAY better than that. I really like the lesson of listening and helping someone else that ISN'T doing what you want more than just abandoning that person for someone who IS on the same page! That really saved the episode for me, which would have been otherwise lackluster.
  4. I've been to lots of clubs that did activities that are easily done alone, or that don't even have anything to do with my little pony. Hanging out with bronies to do anything is fun, but there are some things that you can ONLY do with a group of bronies, so why not take advantage of that? I have two purposes for this thread: discussing past events that we have organized or participated in discussing future events that we are planning or brainstorming ideas for future events Since I'm currently an activities coordinator, items might move from one list to the other! Also, I'd just love to hear your ideas, and they might get integrated into my club. Past Events! Mad Libs: takes a bit of experimentation to get the hang of writing, but they are VERY fun, and we've had two good meetings with them. the first meeting was just as a quick activity while we waited for people to arive, but it as so popular that we did a meeting of nothing but fan-written mad libs. want to try one? CLICK HERE Nametag game: VERY short game where you put nametags on the backs of each person, and then treat each person like they are that pony until they can guess who they are. good icebreaker. Two pony truths and a lie: fun short game based on the non-pony version of the game Never have I ever: re-branded to "Celestia smiles upon you if..." players were sad when we stopped playing, a great indication that the game was loved. It's great when players WANT to lose, so that they can run the next round. Telephone Pictionary: possibly the best game on this list. it is wildly fun, and the challenge is figuring out how often is too often, because people always want to play it again. needs 7 people min, but there is no upper limit. I've also done it online. Pictionary (ponified): I wrote out all the clues, and integrated some of the new modern pictionary rules and we had a great time Catchphrase (ponified): this can be a really newbie friendly game to play, and it as very much loved. I made about 140 cards with easy words and phrases and we get through about 70 per 45 min. Fan Song Trivia: was well designed and executed except for one thing. only HIGHLY enfranchised bronies know enough fan songs to be competitive. out of 18 of us, only 3 were actually enjoying it. Choose-your-own-adventure RP: this was super time intensive to design and pull off, but it worked well and was wall received both times I ran the scenario. Mafia (changelings): was so beloved we had to do it again. we replaced the mafia with changelings, the doctor character with Mysterious Mare Do Well, and the detective with Sherlock Hooves Scene It with pony clips: this is really easy to screw up. And we screwed it up. Could possibly be good in the hands of strong game designer, and/or your club is highly enfranchised. Ponyhammer; table top games with blindbag ponies: this was a nightmare. it took an obscene number of hours to simplify the rules, and the game was still so intimidating that many club members left before, during, or after the rules explanation. Also, it was a major flavor fail. Yay for killing ponies. Karaoke: you can get all the show songs and the top brony songs already with words on the screen, so this isn't an intimidating event to put on, and it was WILDLY popular. we did it twice Theme skits: I've had a great time with these in the past, but if almost everyone in your club is an introvert, it's probably not a good idea! Culture Clash: You split the group into two teams for each scenario: a foreign culture (we chose Yaks, Hippogryffs, and Seaponies) and a pony delegation from Equestria. The foreign culture has some quirk that makes them cold to the visitors until it is discovered and engaged by the pony delegation. When the ponies achieve the objective, the scenario is won. This was a TON of work, and worth every minute. Codenames: the base game is brilliant, but it was a lot of work to make a ponified version work. we made a set of cards, playtested them, and it went poorly. i had to study the codenames cards, and figure out what types of cards are good, and then go back and remake the pony cards. it went ok Don't Forget the Lyrics: you play part of a song, and pause it at the critical line. the competitor has to finish singing the chorus from memory. One of the best games of the set, but relatively intensive to set up. 20 Questions: answer yes/no questions to narrow down the pony or pony related thing. EASY and GOOD. Icing Pony Cookies: What is says on the tin. Tasty and Fun. What Were You Thinking (ponified): Game that asks multiple choice and low number of choice questions, and each person writes down the answer they think will be the most popular. Was a funny game. Fishbowl: A triple threat game of Catchphrase, Charades, and then trying to get them to guess the word with only a single word prompt. I wasn't present when it was run at the club to know how well it worked. Coloring: There are lots of line work pictures on the internet to print out, and I brought lots of colored pencils. We spent the evening coloring them and chatting. Future Events? Continuum Game: slightly active game that gets the players moving around and taking strong stands on controversial topics while staying friendly Human Bingo: you print off a grid of statements (often 5x5), and try to get all of them filled in first by getting other people to sign the boxes if they fulfill the criteria of the box (eg: thinks fluttershy is best pony). Best if your meetup has at least 50% more people than grid boxes. Murder Mystery Dinner. I desperately want to do this...but it is super intimidating to make one of these. I'm thinking about buying a pre-made mystery dinner and re-writing it. Possibly by subbing in a cake disaster or a changeling menace Charades: seems pretty simple, but we just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. Therapy: everyone in the room has the same mental disorder, which is explained when the therapist for the round is out of the room. then the therapist has to come in and figure out what the disorder is. pretty fun in the non-pony realm, but we are having a bit of trouble adapting it. Scavenger Hunt: we haven't fleshed this one out yet, but are looking into how it would work. Poison Joke: Ponified "Curses!" Each turn you get an action to perform, and a curse to hand out. You have to perform the action without breaking any curses. break three curses and you lose. Very silly game, because the actions involve a small bit of role playing.
  5. i think i'll withhold judgement until the story is complete. i didn't really enjoy reading this one, but it could easilly be redeemed with a strong conclusion. The three parts of a story seem to be exemplified in this three part series: #43: put your characters in a tree #44: throw rocks at them #45: get them down the "throw rocks at them" (make things even worse) part of a story is rarely going to be my favorite part, but it sets up the conclusion to be better. i hope they deliver.
  6. my brony group is running a game, and we need some character names: playful sounding seapony names, business/CEO sounding hippogriff names, and gruff sounding Yak names.

    1. Sunwalker

      Sunwalker

I don't know if it is too late, but anyways... These are what I thought, respecivelly: Prism Spire, Shooting Star, and Sullen.

  7. I think it has much broader meaning than that. For instance, I've been arrogantly telling people this for years: "Scrubs is a great show...its too bad that there were only 3 seasons" it's the sort of statement that can apply to you whatever your grievances. I found it to be humbling, since I've been that way so many times without realizing it.
  8. very nice...I appreciate all the trembling text
  9. yeah, but he got better...so was that not satisfying?
  10. the most severe eyebrow-raising thing I saw at the nightmare nights convention were some dudes crossdressing as female ponies. the vendors and panels and hosts were pretty clean.
  11. wonderful work. I wonder if we're ever going to get a payoff for her latent bat-ness implied by the fang... your picture makes me hope that we do.
  12. When I am on any kind of actual adventure, like a 3 day canoeing trip, I impress on whoever I'm guiding to "point positive" you never say "look out for that rock!", because that can be misinterpreted. You always point or shout about the direction you think is safe. If you always do that, then whoever you are trying to communicate can trust that they are telling you a safe direction, even if they can't see it. And if I'm steering from the back of a canoe, the person in the front of the boat has a better vantage point for seeing challenges than i do, so I really want to be able to trust them. Quibble "pointed" positive AND negative, with his "don't go over, go around!", and it was predictably misinterpreted. Take note future adventurers!
  13. they already have monumental respect for her. they were gushing over her accomplishments. she could have called them out, and they would have listened.
  14. I'm excited whatever they do...but there is a subset of story lines that seems far more open to storytelling excellence. they probably can't develop the characters past what the show does, so doing a "modern day" type story is a challenge, since any development must be erased. However, if the bulk of the story happens in the past, they can do a ton of "new" stuff to bring us up to speed. I don't PREFER that we see origin type stuff, but i think it would be easier to make good. maybe they'll find another way to deal with it.
  15. after several years as the activity coordinator for a club, I moved, and started my own club. If I wasn't ferociously in love with it, i'd never have gone through that aggravation. totally worth.
  16. i like car rides that are far too long for the payoff. for instance, I'll drive 90 minutes for good BBQ. I need to have a destination of some sort, but it doesn't need to be "worth" the time and gas it took to get there. I just want to sit in a car with friends and talk for a long time.
  17. we saw that Chrysalis was able to siphon a dangerous amount of power away from Shining armor, but do we have any evidence that the changelings negatively impact the ponies that they consume love from? note that the queen's strategy was not to be well fed but to suck him dry as a military strategy to defeat the shield. theoretically, it doesn't take much to keep them well fed. there might be a win-win solution
  18. I think this attitude is very healthy, and appreciate that you are wrestling with it. I've had to deal with doubts in the past, and was pretty uncomfortable about my faith until I finally got to a point of satisfaction... But it took a long time, and didn't have a conclusion that I could have expected. It would take a LOT of typing to tell the story, but it did end with a satisfying result eventually.
  19. who knows? Hasbro has not been consistent with the show, even with all the full seasons we've gotten.
  20. Even churches that are trying to love same sex marriage couples and other types of "non-traditional" people (i don't knew what a good word for that is), can easily fall into traps that make these guests feel unwelcome. It drives me crazy when Christians use these highly visible signs as an excuse to dismiss or abuse or marginalize people, when that is not Christ's example for us at all. However, just not being openly offensive isn't really good enough. To be welcoming, there is some vocabulary to get rid of, and some worldviews to shift, and attitudes to correct. Of the top of my head, the unfortunately common phrase "love the sinner, hate the sin", misses the mark.
  21. That is exactly the point (when done well). We aren't supposed to LIKE death... But there are core engagements to stories and other media beyond joy. A story can be engaging as all hell, but not enjoyable. These moments often change us for the better. But it is kinda strange to LIKE them.
  22. You are setting the bar extremely low for guilt. who's going to look down on your or think you are weird for liking these classic films?
