  1. I'm going to bust out the "What about Discord" defense. Now, I know this is a bold tactic considering how much people hate that episode, but stick with me here. I was always more lenient ith that episode because I felt like I appreciated what it was going for and could empathize with it. Not explaining Discord's joke at any point, in my eyes, was a good thing for making you get where Twi was coming from. It was utterly insufferable and you just wanted them to shut up and explain it. Because it JUST WASN'T that funny dammit! But see, that's exactly how Twi was feeling. I felt like not "getting" mud almost makes the episode better on some level. I adored him, but if he rubs you the wrong way then you're right there with Pinkie, and in the end you can see that even if you really REALLY don't like him, it's still clear that he and Maud get along and he makes her happy. I really liked their "flirting".
  2. Honestly I feel weird in how much I liked Mud, considering how much hate he's getting. For one I don't think he's exactly the same as Maud. He's not quite as monotone and he's a bit more talkative. More snooty sounding. Also, maybe his humour did it for me, because I loved how insufferably pedantic he was. It worked well up against Pinkie. See, we never got to see what Pinkie would've been like if she also didn't "get" Maud the way the Mane Cast didn't in Maud Pie. Even then it went beyond that, I think Mud is the first pony who legitimately pisses Pinkie off who isn't also supposed to be evil. And I don't think it's an intentional hatred either. He genuinely infuriates her just from his personality, and I think she was trying to get along. She restarted the conversation several times just to go again. Many probably found it ridiculous, I thought the sheer level of her double standard was so pronounced it had to be intentional.
  3. I loved Maud just burying Earth Ponies and implying how useless they are.
  4. Three other random notes: I like how Ember instantly gets softer when she's speaking to Spike. She really seems to like him and it's adorable. Thorax's reaction to the crisis was my favourite out of all the races. I like how he's trying to solidify his race's place in the world and trying to keep their noses out of any kind of trouble. He wasn't furiously threatening to tear things apart to get Ocellus back, he was worried about what the consequences would be if the Changelings were blamed for it. In general they don't seem to be as accepted as it initially appeared. He also had that line where he hinted that many ponies still don't accept them the way the mane cast does. I find the fact that Starlight is a guidance counselor adorable. Just something about the title
  5. They started off slow with this I think. Twi opened a school and each race that wanted to send a student did so. I can't imagine Celestia forced them.
  6. Between this and Shadow Play I like how Starlight seems to really have a high opinion of Twilight. "You are better than this." is how I would describe most of Star’s moments with her in these two parters. She almost doesn’t seem to see Twilight as a friend. She sees Twi as someone who should be better and grander. Which makes sense as she’s the pony who upturned her life, talked her down from madness and then stuck through with her whenever she made mistakes.
  7. Star hasn't really used her past as a joke for a long time. She really only did it for No Second Prances, and there it mostly read as a self deprecating type of thing to me. She spends the season 6 finale scared out of her mind that she hasn't changed and that she doesn't deserve to ever be in charge of anything again because she knew how awful she was. Then in season 7 she uses magic on HERSELF because she doesn't trust herself to not use magic on Trixie if she gets mad. I find Star is more self aware than people give her credit for. There's this little moment I loved in The Times they are a Changeling where Spike is singing that a Changeling can change to a bunch of angry ponies including STarlight, and during the final chorus you can see, in the shadows in the background, Starlight suddenly realize how much of a hypocrite she's being then look away ashamed of herself.
  8. Applejack had by far the best artifact gathering scene in Shadow Play. She's so badass.
  9. Then again, I'm weird. I far preferred Starlight's subplot in The Crystalling to the Flurry Heart stuff. Though, Flurry has grown on me during season 7.
  10. Did you think Uncommon Bond showed that seriously? Because that was one of my favourite episodes of hers. The issue is a very real one that people deal with.
  11. I mean, I can only really say how she makes me react. And I find that her appearances often make me sad. Partly because she's just so scared all the time. Most of her episodes are focused around her being terrified of losing her friends. Of them growing apart from her or her failing them or her scaring them off. When you see that kind of fear from her so much, it's plain to see that it's almost always there, she just keeps it under wraps. I'm not saying she has a vibrant bombastic personality or anything, I just never quite saw it as the nothing others seem to.
  12. On the Starlight personality thing, I kinda do think she has one. Though of all criticisms against star, that she's boring is the one I get the most. I feel like she's got this personable, slightly socially awkward veneer but right underneath it she's dry, sad and quite fearfully desperate. That might just be how I read her though.
  13. I just realized a moment that made me tear up a little bit in a happy way. Celestial Advice. That final bit between Starlight and Twilight. Where you can see how incredibly grateful Star is towards Twi.
  14. My read of this after I saw the Crystalling (which I do think helps with some of the roughness of Star's backstory in Cutie Remark) is that Starlight actually didn't know how strong she was for a decent amount of time. We only ever see her performing magic after Sunburst does it first, and she said: When we were foals, Sunburst knew everything there was to know about magic. He always knew just what to do. And he was always there to help me. I think she only thought she was doing as well as she did because of Sunburst.
  15. I tend to look forward to Starlight episodes more than episodes about the man cast nowadays.
  16. Thorax is getting up there for me. I actually think he's somehow had a better arc about being royalty than Twilight ever did.
  17. IT didn't make me cry, but I find Uncommon Bond to be a pretty somber episode just because of how relateable it is. Helplessly watching a friend you've loved since childhood growing apart from you. All of Starlight's happiest memories are from her childhood, and that's just a bit sad.
  18. I'm at the point where I understand people's issues with Starlight, but I also seem to perk up when I know an episode will be about her instead of the mane cast. She's led to countless discussions that have made me friends and helped me get to know many other people.
  19. I like them as a couple. Mainly because I don't see all that many married people in shows that are as young as those two seem to be. Like, they're still in their primes but they're also settled and happy together.
  20. I know this is an old thread. I just wanted to pop in and give my two cents on certain things about the finale. So, my read on the Twilight/Starlight situation was that Starlight at no point tries to take control away from Twilight and be the hero. At the end her role was to insist to Stygian that Twilight is good at what she does. For me, Star spends most of the finale realising that Twilight isn't quite acting herself. She's focused at first by her adoration for Starswirl then her desire to make it up to him for her past mistake. It blinds her to things. Starlight noticed this. When Starswirl dresses Twilight down and she sulks off, Starlight notices that Twilight is going off, and follows her to try to cheer her up. It's there that she brings up the whole "Maybe we can talk to the PoS" thing. Most of her big moments and lines come from her trying to point out that Twilight should be better than this, to try and get Twilight to act like the hero she knows Twi is. Starlight's characterization isn't always perfect, I admit this as a fan. She isn't the MOST consistent character on the show, but generally, Star can actually read people well. It's how she executes things and how she panics or gets wrapped up in her emotional baggage that gets her into trouble, but she can look at a person and generally read them well. She could see that something was wrong and Twilight was somehow acting more like her. Yeah, when Starswirl starts giving her crap it clearly becomes a bit more personal, but for the most part she's trying to get through to Twilight. Starlight Glimmer: I'm all for pushing the envelope, obviously, but this is pretty out there for you, Twilight. There isn't much precedent set for reforming villains who are currently at large. Discord was beaten and contained before Tia tried to reform him. Starlight was an act of necessity, Twilight couldn't beat her with force. If she could've she would've. But from Star's perspective, that's a natural thing to do, because that's how SHE was stopped. She tried to reach Chrysalis as well in TWABA. The Pillars not trying to talk to Stygian made more sense to me when I considered the sequence of events as they happened. In a fit of percieved betrayal most definitely led by Starswirl (as we know what HE'S like), Stygian is cast out. However, they then immediately tell the cast that they were fully expecting him to return and seek forgiveness. You'd think that if all he needed to do was explain himself, Stygian could've come back, said sorry, THEN explained what was going on. Instead he returned and tried to murder them all. In that situation, I could definitely see that affirming your belief that he was the OTHER kind of 'PoS', especially if you lived through it happening.
