  1. I don't believe in analyzing text. If I'm reading a good book, I take it at face value and enjoy it for what it is. The more you try to extract a meaning from it, the less enjoyable it becomes.

School English lessons ruined plenty of stories for me when they tried to get us to over analyze things. We spent lessons upon lessons just reading the same chapter or two over and over to the point that I lost all interest in the charcters or what was going on.

I now hate the book Lord of the Flies because of how we were made to read and "study" it in oh so much detail. If they were to ask me to give a summary of the whole story right now, I would just state in a deadpan voice that it is about "A group of children becoming stranded on an island and going a bit mad." I really just lost all enthusiasm for the book thanks to the autopsy it was made to undergo.

If William H Golding is somehow reading this from beyond the grave. I'm sorry for what my school English lessons did to your book! Maybe someday, I will be able to appreciate it in the way you wanted it to be appreciated! And I hope that I do!

Stories for me are a means to entertain. The goal is enjoyment! Something to get the imagination going. They are not something to be disected into the tiniest irrelevant detail to the point that the story loses all meaning just to make a bunch of faux intellects look smart and insightful. It's sacrilege when they do that.

Totally agree. I don't mind the reading part of it, but I hate the analysing part. In fact, it's what I'm currently doing now in my English text.

I always do very bad in English. :(
