Did a long scroll of the forum but have zero clue on where to actually start interacting,, 🤧
So instead! Not doing that and just posting on my own page lmao
Today's bug: desert blister beetle!
A species of insects found in arid regions of the US. This specific type of blister beetle can be identified by it's orange head and black back and it's distinct narrow neck.
The blister beetle has a unique defense mechanism - when it feels threatened, it will release a liquid from their joints which, on top of smelling awful, contains a substance called cantharidin that can cause blisters and skin irritation if it comes in contact with your skin. For animals, ex. horses, ingesting this substance may lead to internal tissue issues, cramps, and if untreated, death.
In medieval times, these funny lil beetles and their toxin were used in love potions though! 👀
As well as to induce blisters when this was the remedy to many minor illnesses.Cropped drawing of it from a bigger drawing I've done. Chose a random insect from a daily bug thing I used to do on discord.
If you're reading this, hope you're hydrated and having a sunshine filled day! If not, hope you get to 💛
