  1. I was not technically present for any of the following events (thankfully), but I was attending the school at the time, so I guess it counts.  In middle school (6th-8th grade), there was a kid who tried to poison a teacher by pouring bleach into her coffee.  I don't really know any more details than that, but the teacher is fine now.  Then in high school, most of the freshman hockey team got suspended for pissing on each other in the locker room.  That was an... odd... incident, and (to my great relief) I don't know any more details.  Finally, in college, I'm in Boston, so every now and then there is a shooting on or near campus (so far, never involving a university student) and robberies.  The marathon bombing also happened about a mile away from us, but that really has nothing to do with the college.

  2. Fire Emblem: the Blazing Sword (the seventh in the series, just called Fire Emblem here in the States) is easily my favorite game ever.  The gameplay is challenging, addictive, and fun; the story, while not exceptionally original, is interesting and told well; and most importantly, virtually every single one of the forty-four playable characters (yes, FORTY-FOUR) are complex, likable, and overall just fun to watch interact.  If you take the time to do the support conversations between characters, you will get attached to them, and you will feel awful when a mistake gets them killed permanently.  It's the closest I've seen to a perfect game, and I have yet to play a game that I honestly enjoy more.

  3. Aren't elves supposed to be stronger than humans? I believe that's been said

And that was a lucky shot and you know it.

More nimble and graceful, absolutely, but stronger?  I don't know actually.  Based on assumptions taken from various RPGs, no, elves are not stronger, but I don't have an answer based on Tolkien lore.  If you could find that quote, it would be appreciated.

And yes, I guess part of that was luck, but another part was Azog's overconfidence, which could be seen as another flaw.  That's not to say that Lurtz isn't overconfident as well (specifically noting the scene where he slides himself up Aragorn's sword...), so I guess neither of them have the advantage in that respect.

  4. Azog is stronger than Bolg who could hold his own against Legolas. Azog is going to win if it comes to close quarters

Legolas is not known for his melee combat.  Sure, he's fast, but brute force is eventually going to win.  I wouldn't consider being able to hold off Legolas a terribly great feat.

Also, on the flip side, Azog himself got his hand chopped off by Thorin, who was wielding an oak branch as a shield.  Lurtz's steel shield would presumably fair much better.  (Thorin's later defeat at the hands of Azog I'll chalk up to Thorin being blinded by rage/being a complete moron by full-on charging a guy mounted on a giant warg.)

  5. I've tried meditation before (basically just laying on my back in silence and focusing on breathing), but it didn't work terribly well.  My problem is that I have a very difficult time clearing my mind of idle thoughts.  After a couple of minutes, my mind wanders off into a different direction.  The best I could do was maybe 5-10 minutes.  I might get better at it if I did it on a more regular basis, but I don't.

  6. I absolutely refuse to support Azog and his CGI BS, so Lurtz wins regardless of any circumstances.  Lurtz could be armed with a plastic teaspoon and Azog with a fighter jet and I'd still say that Lurtz would win.

If you want an actual analysis though, I'm still going with Lurtz.  It's shown that he's pretty decent with a bow, and Azog wears minimal armor.  The warg would be shot out from under him and Azog would be pin-cushioned before he could do anything.  Even if they did enter melee combat, shields almost always come out on top.

  7. I'm looking forward to it, though it does seem really early to be released.  I guess if you were to compare it to MLP, which typically puts out 26 episodes in a year, it makes a little more sense since Korra seasons are about half that.  In any case, I thought that the last season was really good once it got going, and I hope that they can continue that forward momentum.

  8. Dress up as a penguin and ride in circles on a unicycle.  This should theoretically trick the pigs into thinking that they are walruses and they shall fly into the ocean to build an underwater empire.  In roughly ten thousand years, they'll rise from the sea and end civilization as we know it, but you won't have to worry about that since you'll have died of old age.

Can you explain why bathing in sodium hydroxide might make cabbages taste like bacon?

As for silly fears, I think that I have a number of them: being late (it doesn't matter why or for what, if I say that I'm going to be somewhere at a certain time, I almost certainly be there at that time, if not 10-20 minutes early), being touched by people (not quite so much a fear, but it makes me really uncomfortable), and romantic relationships (I have a very difficult time understanding them, so I avoid them while simultaneously sort of wanting one.  Yeah, it's pretty counterproductive  :P ).

  10. I live in a college dorm currently, so I'm not sure if you could call it 'neighbors'...  Anyways, I only have one person next to me (I specifically chose the room for that reason alone) and no roommates.  He seems to be a pretty nice guy, and I have no problems with him.  Even with the thin walls, I hardly ever hear him, and that's honestly all that I could ever ask for.  I can't say that I know him too well though.  We say hello if we pass each other on campus, but I've never really had much of an extended conversation with him.

  11. This is a pretty easy one for me.  Years ago when I was a scout in a local Boy Scout troop, we did a big trip up to Mount Greylock in Massachusetts.  On the last day of our stay, we all woke up early and drove to the top of the mountain (we had already hiked to the top before, and time was of the essence here) so that we could watch the sun rise.  That was hands-down the most gorgeous sight I've ever seen.  We were above the morning fog, so everything below us just looked like one massive cloud.  Then as the sun rose the fog began to cave in on itself and it looked like some sort of cloud waterfall.  My description isn't really doing it justice though.  I wish that I still had pictures.  I know that some were taken, but none have been put online to my knowledge.  I guess that I'd just highly recommend watching the sun rise from the top of a mountain at least once in your lifetime.

  12. I'm apparently decent enough at academic writing, though I hate doing it.  I much prefer creative writing, but I'm not really sure how good I think I am at it.  Some of my stories I feel aren't half bad, while some of my earlier stuff are abominations that should never have seen the light of day.  Also, I can't write drama to save my life.  Whenever I try, I end up just sounding stupid and self-important...  My specialty is writing humorous stories, and most people who have read my stuff say that I'm at least pretty decent at that.

  13. "I don't know why people say a double-edged sword is bad. It's a sword. With two edges." —Kamahl, pit fighter.

+1 for quoting a Magic: the Gathering character.

I am most certainly a fan of swords!  I can't say that I know much about them, but I still think that they're really cool.  I have one decorative sword hanging on my wall: a one-handed sword that seems to have Chinese designs on it.  Then I also have this curved knife that looks like it's supposed to be used defensively.  Personally, I'm a big fan of the western style swords, but I'm not too picky.

  14. I'm mostly a kinesthetic/tactile learner (can't quite tell which is stronger; so long as I'm able to stay mobile in some way, I tend to retain more information).  Below that, I'm more auditory than I am visual.  It's sort of a pain in terms of schoolwork because lectures do little to nothing for me, and reading textbooks is useless unless I read every passage a dozen times or I take notes while reading.  Doing the homework is really the only way I really learn anything.  On the flip side though, it provides an excellent incentive to actually do the homework.  :P

  15. It's pretty clear that the Obama in this situation is a fake, since the real Obama would be standing on the left.  That means that it must be Nega-Obama; Obama's evil clone that was forged in the center of the earth by annoying internet commenters.  In that case, I would listen to Celestia and move the lever to the left.
