Earth Pony
Solar's cutie mark represents his connection to the Sun and its assistance in growing crops. It is symbolic of his own presence mimicking that of the sun on the things he grows.

While a motivated and hard worker, Sol usually finds less work to do than he would like: crops seem to flourish under his care no matter the weather and require minimal maintenance simply from being in his presence.
His mantra is to always to follow the direct route: The simplest solution is always the best in his eyes. He believes that over thinking problems only serves to make them worse, which can cause him to appear simple minded on occasion - and by all accounts, he isn't the smartest pony in Equestria.
He is slow to anger and will offer assistance whenever possible (Usually assisting before offering, so as to not be refused) however his mood can shift with the weather: he can easily become irritable when exposed to extended periods of rain, snow and thunder.
Sol hates being 'cooped up inside' and will routinely find reasons to get outdoor and do just about anything to avoid having to spend any more time inside than need be.

Sol dislikes bad weather: an overcast day is a downer and extended periods of rain or snow will turn his mood distinctly sour.

He hates being inside any more than necessary - especially is trapped inside to avoid bad weather.

Sol also has a difficult time relating to pessimists and believes that until they learn to help themselves, he wont be able to help them.
Born to a long generation of wheat farmers, Sol is the oldest of his siblings - though plenty old enough to run a farm of his own he prefers the company of his friends and family. Growing up on a farm, it soon became apparent that Sol's talent had two ways of presenting itself: one verified, the other... speculated.
He was firstly, very good at cultivating plants. Not necessary skilled - they simply grew better in his presence. Indoors or outdoors: come rain, sleet and snow, so long as he spent time with his crops they would seem to grow as well as those in much more practical climates.
Secondly however, his parents found that the sun felt like it tended to shine that little bit brighter and warmer wherever he was - even on days planned to be overcast they would routinely look outside to find an almost clear sky around the farm.
Recently however, he has considered moving on, and striking out to live his own life doing what he does best.
