Joyfire
By equerio
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Species: Unicorn
Appearance: Joyfire has a dark red coat, green mane and tail (half of her tail is gray, because it was once burned). Her horn is broken.
Cutie Mark: Her cutie mark is fire. It represents her love for it, as well as ability do deal with it. She makes the most of her special talent by being a pyrotechnician.
Personality: Joyfire has a very destructive personality. In her childhood, she didn't know how to channel her destructive nature, so she used to be a bully. The moment she discovered her love for fire, she learned to channel her destructiveness, and use it in a more productive way. Since then, she wasn't so hostile towards other ponies, but some traces of her childhood personality remained.
Her favorite philosopher is Neightzsche, and his philosophy has greatly influenced her life. She believes in the will for power, and she is always finding a way to please that will. She believes that there are strong ponies, with great will for power, who are destined to rule the world and are a minority. Having such beliefs could explain her personality better.
She is very intelligent, and been praised by her magic teachers as a prodigy.
She is not very athletic though, as she never considered that to be an important thing in her life. Despite not being athletic, she can handle herself in a fight.
She is often stubborn. That's because she is convinced she is doing the right thing all the time, which can sometimes lead her into trouble.
She is very straightforward when it comes to accomplishing things in her life.
She doesn't trust other ponies easily, as she knows what she has put other ponies through in her childhood, and is afraid of other ponies doing the same to her.
Even though she might seem evil at first, she is actually a great fighter for justice, and is expected to go far in her actions if she sees an injustice being done. Even the kids she bullied in her magic school did something wrong to somepony in one certain point of time.
Backstory: She was born in Ponyville. Her parents were lower-class unicorns, and she was their first daughter. Her mother had difficulties during her labour, and therefore couldn't have any more children.
Because of this, her parents put all her hopes into properly raising Joyfire. Their over-protective nature caused Joyfire to riot against anything her parents said in her early ages. She always thought they were limiting her freedom and creativity.
Her destructive nature began to exhibit when she started attending the magic school. Whenever she saw somepony doing something she assessed as wrong, she started bullying them. This would go on for days. The teachers usually had to intervene. Not too surprisingly though, the teacher weren't really strict with her, because they recognized her great magical talent, and predicted her a bright future in the world of spell making. They were aware of her personality, but they thought it was just a childhood phase, and they didn't want to limit her freedom, as they were afraid she would start oppressing them even more.
Joyfire herself wasn't really interested in magic. As she started growing up, her parents insisted on her pursuing that career, because they though it would be the best for their daughter.
Even though Joyfire often used to riot against her parents in the past, she had enough respect towards them to understand their best intentions for her future. She thought maybe they were right this time, and agreed to try to enroll the Magic Academy after she finishes her magic school. As her parents weren't the wealthiest ponies around, they immediately started saving up bits for her studies. They even stopped buying some things they usually did. All the teachers and the parents were expecting her to pass her entrance exam. Naturally, the burden Joyfire carried was a great one.
When the big day came, she was required to do a set of spells in order for her to pass the exam. The spells got harder and harder as the exam went on. She became exhausted at the midway and instead of taking a break, she decided to continue casting the spells, even though it was clear that she wasn't able to concentrate. As she was preparing to cast yet another spell, her thoughts wandered off for a moment, and the spell backfired, sending her in the air, twisting her in mid-air, and finally ramming her with great speed into the wall that was behind her. Because of the strength of the impact, her horn broke, being in a state of disrepair.
As she left the building of Magic Academy, she thought about her life. Completely crushed, in the same way she crushed with that wall. And she did it for nothing. She didn't even like magic that much anyways, the only reason why she did it was because of her parents. And she was still a blank flank. As she was walking the streets, she was completely unaware of the things that happened around her. She completely disregarded a fire that was slowly beginning to develop just a few meters away from her. She didn't even hear the screaming voices telling her to watch out. She first noticed the fire when she felt a strange warmth on her tail. It was burning. She quickly extinguished the fire on her tail, and procceeded to do the same with the rest of the fire. She did it instinctively.
And at that very moment, something sparkled inside of Joyfire. For the first time in her life, she felt complete. She knew that it is her destiny to control fire. She sa the beauty of things burning, and realized she can do that in a more constructive way too. That was the moment she got her cutie mark. Although her tail did grow back, she keeps dying the part of her tail that got burned gray, to remind herself of that great revelation in her life.
She started studying pyrotechnics on her own, using the books from the Ponyville's library, and quickly mastered all the techniques that were neccessary. Not to mention that she also became the best pyrotechnician in Ponyville very quickly, as that isn't a big accomplishment to do in such a small community. She desperately wants to move to Manehatten, where she can properly exhibit her true talent, but her financial situation is preventing her from doing that (all of her parents saving were spent on that entrance exam and other fees).
Until she is ready for such a big move, she is doing her duty as the main Ponyville's pyrotechnician and waiting for her time to come. Bit by bit, firework by firework, detonation by detonation.
The very first pony she befriended in Ponyville was Anala. Although Joyfire was sceptical at first, she recognised the will for power they both share in her. Joyfire immediately recommended her some of the books by Neightzsche.
