Guards and army

So I have been wondering does equestria have an army I mean they have the guard but they don't seem to be effective at all. They have many problems in equestria also so why don't they have soldiers that can handle situations when needed?

I think it's because "war" is not something that they want present in the show. Plus, with the elements of harmony and rainbow power stuff, they want to focus on the Mane 6 defeating enemies because that's where some of the conflict comes from. The focus is on the Mane 6, and if you get the guards involved and have them be productive, then you make all the battles and enemies in Equestria unnecessary and thus allow the show to revert to G1.5 and G3 conflict natured (boys, hair problems, lost toys, otherwise frivolous and trite conflicts)

So The Royal Guards are useless? I haven't seen them do a damn thing since the beginning of season 1.

Yup, they are. You could say they are there for looks, since it is a kingdom and such. Plus, the only real action we've seen is the Wonderbolts going after Spike in "Secret of my Excess" and that was a fail worth facepalming over....

Ah well, at least they're there to give us good head canons and just look like Stormtroopers.

The Wonderbolts could count as their Air Force. The army is probably made of pegasus and unicorn guards.

they are mostly just ceremonial, and or exist to have the "Warf effect" occur for the new baddies. Can't prove you are the big tough bad guy unless you beat Equestria's finest.

But Equestria doesn't have a standing army, thanks to the fact they exist in a world were war seems to be non existent, and all conflicts are solved within a week by using a WMD class magical superweapon. So other than looking pretty, and making sure the baddies look bad by beating them, they don't really serve a purpose.

No, they don't seem to have a standing army. And honestly, what would be the point? There's no real threats and the ones that do appear can be defeated by single unicorns/alicorns. Also, a standing army doesn't sound like a good idea when you have a society built upon doing what you want to do. So unless there's like 50,000 ponies with like, sword cutie marks, it would go against everything their civilization is about. And heck, Twilight seems capable of handling everything bad that happens so there's no worry
