Does Pipsqueak redefine the concept of pony races?

OK, in MLP universe the races are earth ponies, pegasi, unicorns, alicorns and crystal ponies.

But I've been wondering:

What would define a spotted-coat pony like Pipsqueak? In real life his race would be a pinto pony, but in MLP universe it wouldn't be because his race is earth pony, so could it be a sub-race? An illness? Or simply something genetic?

It might be something similar to freckles. It is something that is not as common, but still happens. I think any race can get freckles.

It is probably just a genetic thing like birthmarks or freckles. It may not be common, but it could be a thing like birthmarks or freckles.

There are no doubts in my mind that coat color is a simple matter of genetics as is eye color or mane color.
