Clarifications before posting

I'm dusting off my old writing skills and taking a crack at MLP fanfiction.  Before I try to post anything, however, I thought I'd get some clarification on the right way to go about doing so:

  • I'm always worried about whether or not I'll finish a project.  With that in mind, do you think I post each chapter as it goes and risk leaving an unfinished work, or wait until it's all done and just post a chapter at a time?
  • My writing tends to be dark, although I'm endeavoring to keep it kid-friendly.  Will that be a problem here?
  • Are there any overdone themes I should avoid?  I'm not terribly familiar with the fanfiction side of MLP, so I don't know what's already been done to death.

Any feedback would be great.  Thanks!

@@Time Shield,

The Guide to Octavia's Hall will tell you all of the do's and don'ts.

It's okay if your writing is dark. As long as it doesn't contain extreme stuff that is not suitable for kids, it's fine.

The definition of dark is a tricky one, because the story I've been posting is "dark" in the sense that it's a scary storyline and has some violence and unsettling imagery, but I attempted to present it in a way that could actually be shown on the show (i.e., no graphic violence, profanity, or things that would permanently alter the show).

(Believe it or not, I was actually inspired by a really old episode of the Smurfs which managed to do the same.)
