Night Sky was doing his normal job in the lower factory: processing raw materials dropped in from the upper factory, which was under construction  This job was menial, but it was rather rewarding in pay. He was sitting on rather good fortune, and it only involved not dying from touching chemicals that leaked into the factory.

 

However, Night sky didn't know that his life was about to change.

It began like a normal day, check in, get to your station and work until Celestia's sun goes down. Night Sky and the other workers slaved over the giant spectra mixing vats until a large, brown pegasus, the mixing floor supervisor, came in holding a sheet of paper. "Attention employees!" He shouted, "today is your lucky day. As it so happens there has been another casualty in the upper factory and Ms. Dash has sent me a letter about finding a replacement"

There was a awkward silence, "Well?" The supervisor looked around, "Any pony gonna volunteer, other wise I'll drag one of your sorry asses up there myself"

Night sky worked in the lower factory ,which didn't know anythign about the upper factory. They didn't know anything aobut killing fillies, or the strange spectra, or even how it was made. All Night knew was chemicals, mixing spectra, ect. Looking up, he didn't volunteer, nor did anypony. His jet black coat stood out among the other ponies, and he was near the front, having been by taht when he went to hear the new pony speak. However, not willing to move into the mysterious upper factory, he remained silent.

The supervisor looked them over, "It looks like we've got a bunch of pansies in this lot, are you all not willing to make Cloudsdale proud with your service?" The corundum remained silent, his eyes locked right on Night, "You there, the black one, come here " he ordered

Night looked around and his expression was one of fear. Those who went up to the upper factory never left. Unless they were in a body bag, they weren't seen from again. Night slowly began walking towards him with a panicked expression, worried about what exactly he was supposed to do. He blinked in fear, "y-yes sir?"

"Congratulations, you've been chosen to work in the upper factory, kiss your life goodbye" Walking over to the wall he pressed a button and a panel in the wall slid open, revealing a plain elevator. "Get on up there," he pointed to it with a hoof, "Ms. Dash can get very angry when she's kept waiting"

Night sky held his breath as he slowly stepped onto the elevator, scared at whatever itw as that was going to happen to him. Slowly closing his eyes, he stepped on and whispered, "W-where are we going?" He knew not to ever talk about Ms.Dash, knowing her to be a complete crazed psychopath and insane. He turned around, looking at the supervisor in fear.

"How am I supposed to know, I only do as I'm told. What goes on up there is none of my business." He laughed, pressing the button, "See ya later" he said sarcastically as the doors closed in Sky's face. The elevator sprung to life and began rattling dangerously as it began to rise

Night Sky couldn't help it when it started rattling, and he screamed. He gripped the walls and started to shake around, feeling like it was going to collapse. He screamed louder when it shot completely straight up, and he finally stopped when the elevator stopped. He shook and watched the door open, shaking like a leaf.

"Oh that's no good, already a minute in and the mental breakdown has already happened." Looking up Sky could see a red stallion with a green mane and a goofy grin staring down at him. The pony's face contorted violently, " What are you talking about, you snapped before you even got in the elevator you twit" Another spasm crossed his face, " Oh don't listen to him, he's got no idea what he's talking about"

The pony looked at him and he didn't do anything. The elevator shaking, the fear of the factory, and whatever it was about this place that was making it stuffy had gotten to him. He looked at them slightly, then he backed out of the elevator. When he had gotten out, he heard pipes starting to hiss around him. The lights flickered around him, casting his black coat in near darkenss, "W-where am I?" He asked, "W-which floor am I on?"

"We're in the weather factory of course"

"Just call it what it is, a slaughterhouse" the other voice interjected

"Go away, I'm talking to the newbie. Anyhoo, we are on the tippy top floor, only the cool ponies get to come up here."

A pipe containing blue liquid burst behind them, "Ugh, that always happens. Don't worry, some pony else will take care of it"

Staring at the liquid, Night Sky looked at them, "W-what is going on? who are you?" looking around, Night started to walk toward the two, missing the blue liquid. Unable to do anything at the moment, he sighed and stared at the two of them.

"I-I'm Night sky...aparentely...I was just promoted...."

"I'm Inkwell, I was working at the factory because writing story's didn't pay the bills but I Did my job so well that I was promoted too. It's been fun working here, everyone is SO crazy" his face contorted again, Inkwells voice seemed to drop an octave. "I'm also Inkwell, the idiot I once was should have left the factory before he had the chance, and now I'm stuck in this hell hole till I inevitably get killed be something up here"

"Don't be such a downer" Inkwell's other personality came back

Night Sky felt the strangeness of the split personality, and he slowly started to back away. Unable to tell what was 'going on, he was half convinced that he was going to dash back into the elevator, when he heard it move along. Night turned around and heard the noises of the factory start again: a low, constant whirling, a large and hardening crash, and the pipes hissing. Looking at inkwell, he whispered, "W-what is this place?"

" We're in the pipe system below the Pegasus Device, it's a great system that some insane pony put together." He patted a pipe, it shook violently. "Well I think I have to take you to Doctor Atmosphere, Ms. Dash is WAY too busy to meet with you now."

"Ya, probably preoccupied with killing-"

"Ah-ah-ah, you'll spoil the surprise" Inkwell interrupted his other persona

Night sky opened his eyes even wider, his body shaking when the world 'kill' came out of the mouth. But, out of fear and not willing to do anything, he slowly followed, trying to focus on him. As the insane Pegasus started moving, he moved with him, flapping his wings. He shook his body at times when the pipes would hiss or steam would come out. He winced down and was so petrified he was shaking.

Inkwell hummed a short turn to himself, unaware of the mess of pipes and wires that surrounded them. " that pipe is filled with toxic gas" he pointed with a hoof to one of the larger pipes and putting to the voice a tour guide would use. "We flood the main chamber with it to pacify the failures"

He then sighed suddenly, " Don't mind him, he's an absolute lunatic. I would recommend keeping quiet till we reach the doctor, Inkwell will shut up if you don't respond to him"

Seeing how Inkwell started to talk in different tones in his complete and utter bedlam of his split personality, Night remained quiet, knowing that whoever Inkwell's other side was most likely understand. Night was looking at the hallway, watching the liquid thunder and water and steam spraying out of the wall. Pipes were starting to burst in certain areas, and ponies began fixing them. night was keeping his head down and he was bent down.

As the two assended a flight of stairs, the hall around them gave way to a wide corridor made out of industrial cloud panels. The flickering lights cast long shadows around them, "Doctor Atmosphere will be so glad to have a new pony on staff, so many losses recently. It's left the facility understaffed and we've all been scurrying around like ants in a maze in order to keep the place up" Inkwell laughed to himself for no apparent reason.

The pony in question started to shake as he heard the name of Doctor Atmoshpere. As far as he knew, that pony was almost as bad as Rainbow Dash, albeit both were not supposed to be named. Looking at the crazed pony in front of him, Night sky kept his mouth shut, knowing that, to invoke another response would be to invite madness. Moving further along into the maze of pipes, wires, and liquid, he looked around the industrial cloud panels as kelvar mixers. As he continued moving, the lights darkened until one could barely tell where Ngiht was, having a black coat.

"Well here it is, the Doc's office" Inkwell stopped at a unmarked door. He leaned in close to Night's ear , "Some say he's......CRAZY"

He began laughing hysterically. "Oh will you shut up, that was not funny" the other voice yelled at him. "Listen, the other guy is right about the doctor, he's a bit mad, madder than the rest of us and that's saying a lot. Just be carful but do exactly as he says" the more rational side of Inkwell warned him

Seeing more of the psychotic pony than Night would ever have wanted to see, the black pony dashed into the room, shutting the door behind him. He was wide eyed and on the verge of going into a panic attack, which wouldn't translate well at this stage. Looking around the area, he could see bloodstains and more all around the room. He looked around for the famed Doctor Atmosphere.

Sitting behind a plain metal desk sat a red pegasus with a graying black mane and short beard. A tiny pair of glasses sat on his nose as he was looking over a stack of papers, "If Test Tube follows through with this the pegasus device may no longer be necessary" he muttered to himself before noticing the visitor. "Ah, your the new mule Dash brought up" he looked Night over with is dark eyes, "take a seat"

The pony that was in front of him was a rather strange one. Night Sky was black, and he was used to being in darkenss. however, this pony was easily visbile, and yet he seemed to have darkenss inside him, shrouding him from the light. His eyes seemed to suck the very soul out of his body upon even the meerest glance at him, and it was completely odd to Night. Night took hsi seat at the table, looking at the ground. The insult of mule was a little harsh, but he didn't say anything.
