Colored Pencil Help

I have been drawing with graphite pencils for a long time and I'm fairly good at it. The issue is that when I apply ink and color, the pencil work doesn't work the same way at all. I have tried to seek out tutorials for traditional color works, but they're invariably leaning toward acrylic or oil. I have a 2 year old; therefore, I am not willing to have paint anywhere in my house.

I'd like to start working with color, but nothing I do seems to have the depth that I can achieve with graphite. I'd like to be able to do color with the same quality, but I am consistently dissatisfied with the result in color which is the reason why I don't do it.

An example of my color and ink work is below. It seems flat, and I can't seem to keep a steady hand with ink. The colors come out stippled and I'm just frustrated with it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks a bunch.

I, personally, think that it looks great!  Sure, you're not gonna have the same color consistency as digital art, but that's to be expected.  Other ponies, myself included, appreciate someone who still uses graphite, it has a sort of realness that digital art will never copy.  People will like it because it's drawn, not because of the color.  As far as graphite goes, this is amazing!

Although I appreciate the sentiment, the picture attached isn't graphite. It's ink and colored pencil (which I'm not sure what they're made of).

Additionally, I feel that if I'm going to draw ponies, color is an integral part of My Little Pony fan work. If that's not the case, you'd really make my day. I like to draw ponies, and I'm comfortable in grey scale, but I'd like to evolve a little.

Also, don't get me wrong, I don't think I'm a bad artist or anything, I just know how to draw, and having familiar tools not work exactly the way I'm used it is frustrating as all get out.

Thank you for your time,

Tom

Sorry, I don't know much when it comes to art (I'd love to be able to draw, but I was not blessed with such ability).  I knew that pencils used graphite, but I wasn't sure whether colored pencils did as well.  I still think that the colored picture looks amazing, but I understand how frustrating it is to have the talent, but not be able to exhibit it as well as you'd want to.  Anyway, sorry to not be able to help as much.

:D You're awesome. I appreciate the feedback. It's always nice to hear that my frustration of seeing an image in my head, and not being able to translate that image to paper with the slightest resemblance is shared in some capacity.
