Star-tipped tail - How can I make this look cool? (Also, mane)

Hi. One of my OCs has a tail. This tail is a somewhat Applejack-ish orange, with a lighter-orange stripe in the middle, and a star-shaped part on the end, like the tip of a flail. It will either be a four or five-pointed star. This star shape will also have the lighter-orange part, which almost reaches the tail's end before becoming a lighter orange star in the darj orange star tail.

 

I've tried drawing this, but I can't make it look good. When I have it as a Twilight-ish tail with a star tip, rather than her flat tip, it looks too big and plastic. When I slim down the 'neck' of the tail and emphasize the 'head', it doesn't look like a pony tail, it looks like a Mewtwo tail, a star-themed Mega Evolution variant. Also, the actual star-tail's star design is hard to work with. When the orange star's five tips cloak the inner lighter-orange star's five tips exactly, it looks too plastic. When I take a page out of Rainbow Dash's book and add in more curled spikes along the tail's edges, even when adding in two curled spikes on the outer star's edges, it ends up looking too much like a Fleur De Lis. And at the same time, all available options also have it looking too much like a big, long, thick, drooping... tail-thingy, the kind Mewtwo has. I want it to look more pony-ish.

 

Speaking of stars, I'm trying to make his mane follow a similar star theme while also vaguely resembling Spitfire's mane, since he used that as a base for his new look, but every concept art drawing so far has looked either too Vegeta-ish, too Sonic the Hedgehog-ish, too Shadow tbe Hedgehog-ish, or too much like a jester hat with five spikes rather than two. And with eight or ten hair-spikes, it just looks overly busy. I want it to scream "I used my magic to sculpt my mane into this style, it fits one of my power and brrrrilliance... and more importantly, it looks so COOL!". It should be quite big, but not so big that it looks silly, like the hair of that character in Pokemon... was it Alder? Or was it the guy in Team Flare?

 

Anyway, how can I make this mane and tailstyle look cool?

I think you might want to ditch this design idea. Perhaps incorporate the star symbol in some other way?

You could incorporate the star motif as a hairclip.

so you probably got the design sorted out already, but I really liked my guide-thingy so maybe it will still be helpful??
