You can get premade puppets which should save you from drawing the actual characters. Those are the basics. I never tried animation before so I don't know too much about how it's done (even though I have seen quite a lot from videos). ------------ I just realized what your question really is but I feel that I should keep what I said above as that could be useful for some.
