Pony fan fiction in real-world/historical settings.

I've been debating this for quite some time. Is it possible to write a fanfic that features characters from the show, but not have it take place in Equestria? Naturally, this would require a greater understanding of how the characters operate.

For example, I really want to blend Ancient Rome with the qualities of Equestria (for example, Celestia and Luna would be Consuls in the Roman Senate, magic would still exist, and the Mane 6 would still be as goofy as ever), but there would also be references to the historical and cultural context of Rome during that time as well (like the conflict with Carthage, slave rebellions, civil wars, gladiator arenas, food, literature (like Cicero and Ovid)).

Is it possible, or would no one be willing to read something like this?

A little bit different, but...

Description: "We all know about stories where Humans enter Equestria. But what about a world where Equestria is in the Human world? It is the year 1820, and a series of events brings a young unicorn and a human prince together. Together, they will embark on a quest to change Europe, and the world, forever.

Of course it's possible to write a fanfic about anything, that's the beauty of fanfiction. ;)

As soon as I started reading I KNEW somepony was gonna bring that up! Take cues from that Zen. It proves what you propose is not only possible, but DAMN entertaining when pulled off right! Edited by Steelquill
