For me: I discovered this visual novel called Haru e to Tsuzuku Oka, and I only know about it because of my favourite music artist, Mamomo, composed music for it, but the story is interesting enough for me thanks to using Google Translate.

Another one: There's an MLP fanfic series called The Hero of Equestria, that retells the story with an audience surrogate OC. He has a harem with the Mane 6, but the actual story (both the romance and adventure/slice-of-life), and pop culture references was enough for me to keep reading it since middle school.

MLP makes for a good example, came for the show (FIM) and stayed for the awesome fandom, people, events, art and music, all so good how could I not stick around?

For me there is also Warhammer, came for tanks, stayed for awesome lore

Equestria at War. Came for the gameplay of the mod, stayed for the amazing writing and characters. Now one of the characters is a permanent part of my personality (Posada).

Well, considering MLP: Came for the nostalgia, stayed for the epic life lessons taught in it. Than I discovered that it's fan base was, in fact, full of decent people! A Rarity I'll tell you. Than I found the awesome music too from said fandom! I'm not Fluttershy to say that much. Than I found out that it has a lot for an older audience too! I Twi-liked that very much! Than when I learned that the art style both from the fandom and the official content looked awesome AF? I Rainbow Dash-ed to find out more! Kay that's all the illiterations I can make of their names. Too much, than I'll have Pinkie Pie on my face and have some Apple Jack-booted thugs kick me out.
Something else I wanna add about why I stayed, as I cannot think of anywhere else to put it. It helped me get more in touch with my feminine side. As a 30 year old man, I did watch a lot of shows with strong female characters, notably the Power Puff girls and Teen Titan when I was a kid. But was also taught the "Proper ways" of being a male: Hold in feelings, don't cry, act tough. It was a conflict as you can imagine, especially when I bought a Powerpuff girls book as a kid, and felt like I had to hide it in order to keep it. Wanted to by more, but societal expectations kept me from doing so. MLP FiM helped me get mroe in touch with my other side. More caring, more open, and more accepting. I still have a ways to go, but it's been good.

The Richard Sharpe book series! Came for the history, stayed for the amazing action scenes! (Even if it was sometimes filled with icky romance.)

That's a hard one for me, I could say the same thing that Sparklefan123 said, but I don't want to be repetitive, same thing about MLP, all the other things I like I came for one reason and stayed for that same reason, so hmmm.....I think The X-Files? It's the only one I can remember, I started watching it because I was interested to watch a series about Alien & UFOs mysteries, but I stayed for the government conspiracies and the multiple stories surrounding investigation about the paranormal and other weird things that aren't ufo/alien related, also the character arcs that really amazed me, I don't even like drama/police investigation series, but this one just somehow makes me sit and pay close attention. ~☆
