I've been wondering about this

Ever since the episode aired. Basically, everyone knows about how King Sombra took over the Crystal Empire a thousand years ago. But was he originally from the Crystal Empire? or was he from some far off place that was shown off screen. And was most likely planning to conquer for a long while now.

Pretty sure there was a comic arc that basically answers all the questions(Seige of the Crystal Empire, and yes the misspelling is intentional)

But to answer your question: But was he originally from the Crystal Empire? Yes, and he became King by taking out it's leader at the time. I won't say anymore in case you're interested in reading it

Ah, I already got 100% of that story spoiled for me from the video link above. It's a super intriguing story. I'm guessing his kind originates from within the Crystal Mountains then?

Several things to consider, and none necessarily get you closer to the answers you seek.

The comics are there own thing. When the show was still in production, they were considered fine, as long as they didn't contradict the show, and they had to get permission for storylines to not accidently leak ideas already in the works. However, this has resulted in inconsistency. As fun as the comics are in story, and beautiful in art, they can basically be viewed as fanfiction with a stamp of approval for publishing. You can choose to accept the comics into your headcanon, but that's what it'll be.

Sombra has a very unique design. To what degree his physical form results from the corruption of dark magic, raw power, intentional appearances, or hereditary treats, we simply don't know.

His mane flowing like Celestia and Luna's could illustrate a similar level of magical capabilities, especially since he can hold his own in absence of the elements of harmony, and it's demonstrated to do this before he was turned to shadow.

His height could similarly be a sign of this, but perhaps this and other features are like how Luna can change ge her appearance to that of the larger and more intimidating, Nightmare Moon.

His curved horn is sometimes interpreted as a connection to Mistmane's unicorn village, but the absence of a spiral for a colored gradient brings that into question.

Even his title as King can be questioned, as we have no official noble bloodline mentioned. He commands enough respect to be recognized by Celestia, but all we know for sure is his reign through conquest.

King Sombra is one of a kind, and perhaps that's how he wants it. You can question his origins, but you can't question the threat he poses. He presents himself as being capable and encompassing the unatural, and that's how he wants it.

Consider these things, and more as you dive into the rabbit hole. And as you do, wonder loud, and wander far.
