Are there any theories on why Cheese Sandwich, whose special talent is jokes and fun and parties, has a cheese sandwich for a cutie mark?

He could just be really good at making grilled cheese, or love to eat them. That's clearly not what drives him, though. I think it's safe to say that literal cheese sandwiches are not his purpose in life.

Perhaps it's one of those cutie marks which is more symbolic than literal, as Diamond Tiara and Cozy Glow have. How, though, does a cheese sandwich symbolize laughter and fun? The only connection I can think of is "cut the cheese," and Cheese's humor goes in many more directions than mere farts.

What's the deal?

I googled what grilled cheese symbolizes, and it said that it symbolizes comfort and nostalgia. I don’t think that’s it. I think Cheese Sandwich’s Cutiemark is just supposed to represent general whimsy.

Hmmmm...:ponder:

Well, Google says it's also associated with childhood and simple pleasures. It is also an easy and affordable meal in times of economic hardship. While none of these concepts are particularly related to humor, they do have the potential to bring smiles. It's also possible that the nostalgia aspect could remind ponies of the childlike wonder that they once had, which includes their hyperactive sillyness. On another, less deep, note, grilled cheese is a random object, and random objects are often affiliated with whimsy.

Hmm, okay. I see the association with childhood, which in turn is associated with playing and fun.

His cutie mark is mostly a pun. It's his name made literal, which fits his Weird Al–style humour. “Cheese” also ties to smiles, such as when people pose for photos and shout  “say cheese!”, and a cheese sandwich is simple, fun, and universally liked, just like his parties. It’s meant to be symbolic and quirky rather than a literal talent.

Weird Al has a long-running theme of cheese jokes. The Cheese Sandwich episode is full of Weird Al cheese jokes and references. I remember lighting up seeing/hearing them, recognizing them from bits Weird Al and Doctor Demento did on Demento's show, back in the 1980s. I think that's part of the joke when Pinky pops out of the float and accuses Cheese of stealing her song, and Cheese denying it in a very Weird Al way. Can't remember much more at the moment, though that episode was wonderful with its layering of allusions and riffs. Cheese as The Man With No Name is just brilliant.
