A question about Starswirl the Bearded

I'm working on a fanfiction, but I have a question about Starswirl the Bearded (the pony Twilight dressed up as in the Nightmare Night episode).

 

In one of the more recent episodes, I am pretty sure Twilight says that she was tutored by him, so:

 

Is Starswirl alive or not?

 

also, is there some way that I could exactly figure out what "amniomorphic" means, anyway?

Starswirl is most likely not around anymore,When she said it she was acting her part in the play. amnio is fetus and morph is to change so it will most likely be something to do with a fetus not sure what though seeing as fetuses arent quite a normal thing to talk about on a show like this >.<

I was thinking it was some kind of spell that let you change forms or something. >.<

that would make sense for the show, i think they may have just put a word and morphic together to make it sound good, you could probably just say its a shape shifting spell.
