Sepia-chan 495 August 6, 2012 Share August 6, 2012 (edited) My aunt let me borrow this book she likes. It's divergent! Wait, no, it's Divergence! Wait, no! It's a New York's Time bestseller. Well let's read. As we begin, on the very first page, our protagonist tells us that her family might be able to help her make her choice. Wut? She continues to say that she can't talk about her aptitude test or-- Whatever, I'm going to the actual story. These sort of 'copy paste a page into the beggining of the book to create intrigue' things have never sat well with me. My first thought as I flip through the pages is how greasy and inky they feel. It's probably the type of page this book uses, but it makes me shudder with every page turn. Okay, Chapter 1. "THERE IS ONE mirror in my house." uh, okay. "It is behind a sliding panel in the hallway upstairs." Thanks for sharing. "Our faction allows me to stand in front of it on the second day of every third month, the day my mother cuts my hair." Uh, okay. "I sit on the stool and my mother stands behind me trimming with scissors" Yeah, that's sorta what a haircut is. 'The strands fall on the floor in a dull blond ring." Eww, the protagonist is blonde, nothing against blondes, of course. My best friend is blonde. "When she finishes, she pulls my hair away from my face and twists it into a knot." Sounds good to me. "I note how calm she looks and how focused she is." Uh, okay. Important why? "I sneak a look at my reflection when she isn't paying attention not for the sake of vanity but curiousity" blah blah blah. Vanity is the excessive belief of your own attractiveness to others. So apparently wondering what your hair looks like is vanity now. And that's just the first page, folks! Edited August 6, 2012 by Dusk Eninama Ace Attorney Objection! Hold it! Take that! Gotcha! Eureka! I like video games and anime.
Mephala 2,633 August 6, 2012 Share August 6, 2012 I've seen this book on the shelves at our local shop but never picked it up. It has no interest to me and now, reading this first page, I have less desire to than before XD
