private Surrogate Sisters

The room remained in a long, awkward silence for quite some time. Dash's wing flapping had come to an abrupt halt, when the azure weather pony clomped to the floor on all four hooves, and stared at Twilight, then to Applejack, with an expression of both confusion and shock. Though Twilight could not see it all too well, Applejack's green eyes dug trenches into Dash's; she knew that behind those eyes was an entire abyss of doubt. Doubt in her own abilities to do such a thing.

No. No, no way. No bucking way.

A coach? Sure, the kid couldn't fly, and if nopony was gonna bother to lift a hoof to teach her, it might as well be her.

A friend? Well, sure...if the kid wanted to hang out then they could hang out and go flying once in a while. The squirt could ride on her back till Dash got the kid in the air, herself.

But a role-model? A caretaker? A sister?

"No way!" Dash said rather loudly, her defensive doubts lashing out. She puffed her wings and shook her light-spectrum maned head. "I mean...I'm not sister material, you guys, I can't just...take her in...I mean..."

Why should she have to do it?...though, the rainbow pony already knew why. The kid worshiped her.

--

Applejack stared back into her pony friends' overly stubborn eyes, rolling her own eyes along with Twilight as soon as Dash responded. However, what she didn't expect was the sound of a filly stuttering a non-audible excuse, and running out the front door. All three ponies blinked and turned in confusion, just in time to see Scootaloo darting out Twilight's front door.

Horse apples. Applejack thought. Looks like it's about ripe time ah give you a stern talkin' to, Rainbow.

"No way."

Scootaloo felt like a dagger had just pierced her heart. She was already in a state of surprise and shock at the fact that Twilight suggested for them to become sisters, but... Rainbow Dash just... said... no. Rainbow's tone was angry, impatient, annoyed. The orange pegasus never wanted to do that to her. She just wanted to spend time with her. Not be a burden... She could only bear to speak these words,

"I-I uhh... Gotta go... I think Applebloom and Sweetie Belle need me for uh... s-something."

The little filly stormed out of the treehouse, eyes becoming, yet again, glassy.

--

Twilight watched the scene unfold as if it was sped up twice. Everything seemed to happen so quickly, it took her a second to regain her senses. She shook her head quickly, saying,

"I better go get her since Spike can keep himself busy in the other room. I'll see you two later." The purple librarian had a very serious expression. Twi then teleported outside her tree house, surveilling her surroundings, looking for a small orange filly running about.

--

Dash felt a twang in her stomach. "Great. I've made her cry again. Why does this have to happen to me? Why not someone else?"

"Argh!" the weather pony exclaimed in frustration, banging her two front hooves against the floor. She looked up with a face of complete guilt to see a serious and irritated look on the applebucking athlete's face. She smiled sheepishly. "I... uhhh.." she murmured, and resumed looking at the wooden floor.

"...Ya mind tellin' me how come you're so darn scared?" The orange pony began, ushering Dash over to come sit with her in one corner of the quiet, peaceful library. Sitting down, she took off her brown hat and laid it gently on the floor. Curling her front hooves under herself, she got comfortable and watched as Dash sluggishly flopped back on her flank, hooves down between her lower hooves, doing her best not to look the pony in the eyes. Dash knew darn well that AJ was the only pony stubborn enough and wise enough to get Rainbow to admit to anything. Applejack was also the only other tomboy around, so, truth be told, Dash usually didn't mind opening up to her that much.

Applejack knew all of this, too. She knew it, and that was why she was Dash's best friend.

The room was silent for a few moments other than the rusting of Spike sorting books in the room to the right. The cyan pegasus kept her magenta eyes fixed on the floor. She knew she should have handled that better, she just knew. But the same point was still in her thoughts: she was no sister. "I'm no role model... I shouldn't have to do this..."

But then Dash remembered the sincerity in Twilight's voice. Twilight, being the egghead she is, rarely messes around. And when she has a tone of voice like she had before Scootaloo darted out the door, you know she means business. "AJ seems in on this too... but I-" she pondered, looking up to see a serious expression on Applejack. The rainbow maned weather pony couldn't sit there any longer, her stress and concern just bursting out of her,

"ARGH! AJ, how do I handle this? I can hang out with the kid, sure, play with her for a little bit of time a day, but actually become the squirt's sister? I'm no good at that!"

"And what makes you think you'd be no good at bein' a sister, Rainbow?" Applejack began, shifting her position, but not removing her bright emerald eyes from the blue ponies' magenta ones. Her flattened, serious mouth and stern eyes could possibly rival even Fluttershy's 'Stare'. The earth pony got up and sat back on her own flank, mimicking Dash and awaiting her response. But, like a game of chess, Applejack already knew what the tomboy's excuses would be. And she already had her response planned out.

She had to let the weather pony work at her own pace, though. This had to be heart to heart, not a lecture. Dash would tune her out if she pushed too hard. Though a rough and daring tomboy, Dash was easy to work once you knew where her buttons were.

The pegasus looked up in disgust. Did she just believe what she heard?

"What makes me think I'm not a good sister?!" Rainbow said in frustration. "Do you know who I am? My name is Rainbow Dash, top athlete in all of Ponyville and-" she stopped at the squint in Applejack's eyes at the sound of that sentence. "Uhhh, only rivaled by you, of course," she said, smiling nervously. The cyan pegasus quickly shook her head, resuming, "But that's not the point! I'm no good for being a sister!" You have to be all cuddly and sappy, and you know well as apples that's not who I am! That's so uncool! Aaaaand it's a ton of responsibility! How can you stand having to take care of a small, energetic filly? I have SOME responsibilities, but not those kind of responsibilities!" She puffed, putting all those words into one breath.

"How could Applejack even have the smallest amount of faith in me as a sister? Does she even know me?" she pondered angrily, gritting her teeth. She knew she shouldn't be this frustrated, but this whole situation was putting too much weight on her.

"Ah'm a tomboy, too. I'm an athlete, as well. What's the difference between you and me, Rainbow?" Applejack said hardly. "The answer is, very little. You may have a bigger ego than ah do," She smirked as Dash snorted in annoyance at the comment. "And ah may be a bit more invested in personal relationships with mah family, but at the end of the day, nonea the reasons you just gave me are at all valid."

She got up from her spot and moved closer to Rainbow, staring and making sure the pony didn't look away.

"Ah'm a pretty good sister to Apple Bloom, wouldn'cha say?" She asked rhetorically. "There ain't a single thing about you that makes you 'bad material' for bein' a sister, Rainbow Dash. And ya know why that is? Cause there ain't no manual on being a good sister. You say you wouldn't mind playin' with her, and that you wouldn't mind hangin' out, and hell, she's already spent a night with you. We might as well call you a sister right now, if you just keep doin' those things."

Dash began to open her mouth, and Applejack shoved her orange hoof in her mouth. "And as far as 'sappy' stuff goes, who says you need to suddenly start bein' super affectionate all the time? Each and every filly is different, Dash. Apple Bloom is a lot like me, she enjoys bein' affectionate, so, she can be a cuddle filly once n' a while. But Scootaloo is a lot like you, a die-hard tomboy. Ah wouldn' be at all surprised if all she really wants out of a big sister is someone to play with her and be her best friend."

Her rant coming to a close, Applejack removed her hoof, and awaited the mare to reflect on her words.

Dash squinted at the applebucking earth pony. She kept opening her snout to respond, but immediately withdrawing in fear of making herself look foolish. She hated being proven wrong, it battered at her massive ego that she refused to admit was that large. But her friend had a point. Applejack was no less an athlete, no less a tomboy, and no less a sane pony that herself.

"I guess..." the cyan pegasus muttered. Applejack was right. Scootaloo was definitely not the type to cuddle and do all that nasty sappy stuff. But...

"How can I actually keep her as a sister? She was such a hassle at my house! She's the reason I'm up so early and stuck in this whole situation!" she exclaimed, with a little voice crack.

Already noticing her efforts beginning to pay off, Applejack lightened her expression and seriousness. She could hear Spike mulling about in the room next to them, sorting books on shelves.

"Last night, and nights for about the next few days are gonna feel like a dream come true for her, Dash." The earth pony began, Scootaloo's overjoyed face coming to her mind. "She's a filly that was just given something she's always wanted. The initial excitement'll dull into a more manageable state once it becomes a bit lackluster. Just give er' some time to get used to it. After that, any problems you experience with er' is just typical filly behavior. Again, yer a lot like her, ah'm sure you'll be able to put yer hoof down and make sure she knows what you expect from her as far as expectations go."

The earth pony got back up and smiled. Dash smiled as well, though far more meekly.

"If you need any help, fly on over to the farm, ah'll be glad to give you any tips n' pointers, as long as you're willin' to ask em'."

The rainbow maned pony felt a bit better, however she still had a slight twang in her stomach. She would give the little filly another chance, for sure, Applejack's words were just too persuading. She still needed to think about this though.

"Alright, I'll give it another shot, AJ... Thanks for the help, I'll be sure to drop by if I need the help." Dash said with a small wink. Before trotting outside, she tapped hooves with the orange pony. Rainbow then, once outside, sniffed in the fresh air and meditated on her thoughts and this whole situation.

"Hopefully this will work out..."

--

"Was is something I said? Something I did?"

These were the only thoughts traveling through a certain orange pegasus's mind as she slowly trotted through Ponyville, towards the Cutie Mark Crusaders Clubhouse. She had ruined it, she just knew it. That angry look on Rainbow Dash's face said it all. The weather pony didn't want her around at all. The orange filly drooped her ears at this thought, and slowly trotted along, near the entrance of Sweet Apple Acres.

She suddenly jumped at the sound of a magic surge behind her.

With a sudden flash of bright purple magic, Twilight Sparkle zapped into being just a few feet behind Scootaloo. She had seen the filly down the street, and for a unicorn with her magical prowess, all it took was for Scootaloo to be visible, for her to get next to her. Panting just slightly, the purple unicorn trotted around in front of the orange pegasus, and looked down at her with a mix of surprise and amusement, in attempts to lighten the situation.

"Boy, you sure can get around fast," She chuckled, cocking her head as Scootaloo simply looked down at the dirt road. Twilight sighed and directed the filly over to the side of the road, where a convenient bench laid.

"Let me guess," she said. "You think Rainbow doesn't like you, right?"

"What in the..." the little filly said unintentionally out loud. How did Twilight know that being here only for a few seconds? She tilted her head to the side a bit, furrowing her eyebrows, but remembering that Twilight was one of the most elite and powerful unicorns in Equestria. Mind reading spells must be nothing to her. But she then thought of Twilight's question.

"Do I think? No, I know." Scoots said pitifully, looking at the dirt yet again. She was put on the spot for a topic she didn't like to discuss. "You heard her tone. I mean, come on, she hates me. She doesn't even want me around. I might as well just go back to my original home," she said, pointing her hoof towards Sweet Apple Acres. Back to a dark place. Alone.

Nobody there.

(Yours was as long as mine xP Why apologize?)

"Would a pony who didn't like you take you into her own home, instead of dropping you off at an orphanage?" Twilight said, sitting down on the bench and curling her hooves underneath her. Scootaloo had curled now into a sort of half ball of depression, looking at the cracks between the wooden bench's planks. "I know you think you know Rainbow, but in truth, I'm betting there's things about her you don't know about."

The sound of ponies trotting through the streets, buying food and interacting with shopkeepers was like white noise to the unicorn at this point, and she easily drowned it out, moving on with her rant.

"I've been Rainbow's friend for several months now, and if you want my opinion, the mighty, proud Rainbow Dash...is just scared of the concept of her becoming a sister, if even a surrogate one."

(I guess x_x It's just I have definitions on what I consider a good post, and I don't think mine have been up to par lately :x)

Twilight was probably going to win this, and Scoots didn't know if that was a good or a bad thing. "Isn't Rainbow an awesome, super cool, best-flier-in-all-of-Equestria pony?" she asked rhetorically, going on, "I mean, I thought she was play roughhousing with me earlier this morning, but I guess it was just her angriness or whatever... And what does surrogate mean? Is that surgery?" The little filly continued to fiddle with her hooves and look around. Though, something about what Twilight said confused her.

"Sister? Surrogate?" all of this was starting to twist and twirl Scootaloo's thoughts. She looked at Twilight, awaiting a response.

(In the end, just BS some extra character actions and describe the environment, if you're truly brain dead XD)

"Rainbow's the definition of a tomboy," Twilight began, tapping her hoof against her chin and gazing up at the puffy white clouds, sitting stagnant and still in the blue sky overhead. "She plays rough by nature, and can be kind of brash. She also isn't a fan of being, well, affectionate. Well, no, I shouldn't say that. Rainbow has her own way of demonstrating affection, and sometimes it might be a little confusing. I'm sure she wasn't trying to sound mean this morning, if I'm understanding you right. She's not a morning person, so she was probably just cranky."

Twilight's tail flicked over the edge of the end of the bench as she thought.

"Hehe, no, Scootaloo. Surrogate means substitute, or, a replacement for something. If we look at the term 'surrogate sister', then what does that translate into?" She smiled warmly and waited for the filly to give her answer. She supposed she was becoming like her own mentor far too much. Like Celestia, she enjoyed teaching, and letting others learn lessons themselves, instead of always providing the answers for them.

(Ah, k. I just realized we've had 4 pages of this wonderful shit, it's amazing :D)

"I guess, but I just don't know... She sounded pretty mad..."

Ugh. Scootaloo hated questions that she didn't ask herself. The fact that Twilight was looking at her attentively didn't help the situation. "Uhm... So she said surrogate means like a replacement... and if you combine the two you get surrogate sisters... does that mean..."

"Replacement sister?" the little filly mumbled quietly, yet loud enough for the attentive purple unicorn to hear. She hope she got it right, she didn't want to make herself look like more of a fool than she already was.

"Exactly!" Twilight said happily. "A surrogate relationship, in this case, surrogate sisters, is when a pony feels so close to another pony, that they see themselves as sisters, even though they aren't actually related."

Her little pop question having been answered, she continued on with her inevitable 'egghead rant', as Rainbow herself would call it. "You like Rainbow Dash because she's fast, cool, and doesn't let anything bother her, right?" Scootaloo nodded. "She's a very independent pony, and though she does have friends, Rainbow has never, in her life, taken care of someone else. Well, she takes care of her pet Tortoise Tank now, but turtles and tortoises are low maintenance, and can't even be compared to taking care of a filly."

Twilight gently poked a hoof against the orange pony's body, emphasizing her incoming point.

"Which means, to her, the thought of being anything like a sister, even a surrogate sister, is very scary. My guess is Rainbow was shocked and felt put on the spot when Applejack brought up that Dash should take you in, and more or less act like an older sister to you, in much the same way Applejack and Rarity do with their own sisters, your friends, Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle."

Twilight could see Scootaloo's mouth open slightly, as she blinked and stared, trying to keep up with this never ending train of thought. Twilight figured it was time to wrap this up. She stood off from the bench and smiled warmly again.

"I don't think Rainbow was saying no, and I don't think she was trying to upset you in the least. I think she was taken aback, and the thought of a responsibility she's never had to practice before coming up to her in her face like that made her scared. Dash has been known to be defensive when scared like that."

(Long post makes my posts look like Scootaloos, thanks :x)

Scootaloo stared blankly at Twilight's beaming expression, trying to comprehend all that was just spewed out of the purple unicorn's snout. Scared? Rainbow Dash isn't scared of anything, and she shared her feelings, "Rainbow Dash isn't scared of anything! She can handle lots on her--" she stopped right there. The little filly was letting her fangirl aspects get the best of her, and she knew it. But still...

It doesn't change the fact that Rainbow still sounded angry with her and that would spark silence every time they came into contact with each other. It feels like nothing will be the same between the two anymore.

"But... she still is mad at me I think. I did bug her a lot this morning, and she doesn't seem up for caring for me at all... I might as well go back to my clubhouse home..."

(I'm being Twilight, how can I not be wordy when it's my duty to explain all this shiz to Scootaloo? XD Also, Scootaemo lol)

"Squirt, don't say stuff like that." Came a stern voice from somewhere behind the bench. "You don't belong out there by yourself, and you know it."

Both purple unicorn and orange filly turned their heads around to gaze at the newcomer. Rainbow smiled casually and walked up behind the bench, her wings puffing out as she reached her friend and admirer. Unfortunately, her tongue was tied. That was all she had immediately thought of to say. Thankfully, Twilight cut in.

"Hey Rainbow. I assume Applejack talked to you, huh?" The unicorn guessed, giggling as Rainbow awkwardly put a hoof to her own mane and rubbed it sheepishly.

"Yeah. I got told off." She summed up, not wanting to dwell on the matter. She turned her attention to the orange pony. "I'm sorry for what I said, kid. I didn't mean to sound like I didn't like the idea. Like Twi says, I just don't know if I could be a good sister, is all."

As soon as Scootaloo turned around and heard those words, she didn't know what to think. Most of the time, just getting to talk to Rainbow Dash was a dream come true. But now... it was weird for her after what happened this morning. But something about the cyan pegasus's words were reassuring, along with the confirmation by the unicorn beside her.

Scootaloo hopped down off the bench and trotted over to the weather pony. "So... are you still mad at me?"

"Oh man... I hope she isn't mad at me... Nothing in my life will be the same anymore," she said, putting on a frown.

Dash's bright sky blue feathers ruffled as her wings settled back down to her sides. She gave the orange, purple-maned filly a look of disbelief. She winked at her and casually stuck one front hoof onto the young pony's head, rubbing her mane and messing it up roughly.

"Mad at you? I was never mad at you, kid," She explained, not enjoying the prospect of coming clean and explaining her emotions, but finding it easier with Twilight there. And after having received her lecture from a certain farm pony. "I just like snoozing for a bit in the morning, and not getting up right away. And like Twi said, earlier I was just...a but jumpy, I guess. I didn't know how to handle that, it was thrown at me way too fast. But, it's all good now."

Passing it off, she sighed to herself, and caught a glance from Twilight, who had smiled and begun to move away from the two. She winked to her athletic friend, said goodbye to the two of them, and then trotted away in a straight line down the road. After a few moments, she vanished mid-stride in a flash of pinkish magic.

Now, the two tomboy pegasi were left alone again, for the first time since that morning. Dash looked at the ground and scrunched her nose a bit.

Now what?

The orange filly's eyes widened. Her ears perked up. Did she believe what she was hearing? Rainbow Dash wasn't mad at her? Scoots grinned and hopped over to the cyan pegasus. A certain orange filly jumped up to the Ponyvillian and hugged her around her neck. Tight.

Like a sister.

Though, Scoots remembered one thing. She didn't know whether or not her lifelong idol actually wanted to become her surgery or whatever sister. The little filly stepped down from the rainbow mane, speaking,

"You're really not mad? Ohmigosh! But... You don't really have to do what Twilight said, if you don't want to..." The orange crusader looked deep into the magenta eyes, nervously awaiting a response.

"Hey hey, come on squirt! Hehe." Dash muttered, eyes widening, front left hoof picking up and wings ruffling as the orange pony jumped her with a hug. Though she felt an initial urge to push the filly off for fear of a bunch of people staring, the blue weather pony didn't seem to mind all too much. She waited for the kid and jump off, and then blinked with a blank expression as she watched Scoot's face go from happy to nervous in the space of not even three seconds. Crap...was that another thing fillies did that Dash would have to deal with, too?

"Well, I dunno..." Dash started, dragging out her words playfully and putting on a mock expression of deep thought. "Are you cool enough to even be the sister of Rainbow Dash, squirt?"

The crusader felt warm inside again. Rainbow Dash was.. playing with her and joking around! She must not be mad! "Oh geez, ohmigoshyes..." her train of thought was lost as all her words were swelling up in her throat in excitement. She eventually burst, spreading happiness louder than Pinkie's party cannon.

"OH MY GOSH! YES! I mean... uh..." Scoots said, regaining her composure, "of course I'm cool enough to be your sister? I mean, I'm the most coolest surgery sister in all of Sisterville!" the little filly bragged playfully, hopping on Rainbow's back. "Can we go flying again? Can we? Can we?

"Surgery? Sisterville? Hehe." Dash giggled as the filly continued to misspell the word Twilight had attempted to teach her. She then blinked in surprise when the small body came flying down on her flank. Dash shook her mane out of her face and smirked, wiggling herself and forcing Scootaloo to grip to the brightly colored rainbow mane tight, in order not to get thrown off.

"Alright, I suppose we can give you a tryout at being my little sister. But I'm no Applejack or Rarity, squirt; I play rough, and you better be ready for it!" Dash lowered her chin down to her front hooves, and stuck her flank high in the air. The kid wanted some more flying, did she? Alright.

A second later, a powerful sonic boom caused a wave of air to smack into the faces of unwary ponies that happened to be too close. Rainbow Dash shot into the sky like a speeding bullet, air rushing through her mane, face and past her ears. She could feel Scootaloo's front hooves clinging for dear life around her neck, but she also listened to her cheer.
