The cartoons of the 80s and early 90s were typically more action-oriented, and I loved them. Things like Thundercats, He-Man, etc. From the mid-90s through the early 00s, most of the cartoons I can recall were more humorous, and definitely more adult than anything I watched as a wee lad. One might consider them from different eras but I wouldn't say one was better than the other, as they weren't trying to do the same thing. I honestly have no idea what's been going on from 2005 or so onward. I've seen a little bit, but what I've seen has failed to impress. My biggest concern for modern animation is censorship. Some of the humor of the Animaniacs would never fly if they were to try making jokes about present-day people of interest or situations. An 80s or 90s level of violence wouldn't be acceptable either. I remember that for a time Wile E. Coyote and Popeye were banned because they were too violent. Whether or not the bans are still in effect I don't know. For that reason alone, which may have little or nothing to do with the wishes or intentions of the content creators, I have to side with the "old." I prefer my cartoons/anime straight, not watered-down.

I remember some of my old favorites like the animated series of Batman getting rebooted/getting a sequel and not liking what I saw. And that may be the only thing that I truly don't care for: reboots. On the other hand, I've heard that the reboot of Thundercats is great. I know the plot and the lore are entirely different from the original, but as with all things I'm willing to give it a try.

Older. With a few exceptions (Friendship is Magic and Adventure Time), I have hated the majority of modern cartoons. People are too politically correct and afraid to make even the slightest adult joke. That's one thing I love about Adventure Time, if you understand Korean (or just look up translations like I did), Lady Rainicorn has quite a few dirty lines. Actually, most of the characters do, but hers are the most blunt.

Anyway, go back to 80's and 90's cartoons, and there were all those kinds of jokes.

I mean this stuff wouldn't fly with today's TV standards.

Newer things. As much as I LOVE many classic shows, and as much crap as modern TV goes, I'm starting to notice that TV's beginning to pick up the pace again; with shows like: Gravity Falls, Regular Show, Adventure Time, FiM, Pound Puppies, etc.

I think I'm starting to see a new light, a brand new era in television. An era that's going somewhere, an era that SHALL SHINE ONCE AGAIN IN TV. BRING IT ON WORLD! BRING IT OOOOOOOOOOON.
